This store is a passion project and while physically it's not a huge location, browsing here you'll find loads of attractive vinyl, of both the 7" and 12" variety, all reasonably priced. You'll also find an owner (and I'm sure a staff, though I was fortunate enough on my visit to meet the owner Claudia) who is passionate about music and happy to chat with you about your favorite artists. She may even share some of hers as well. I have to say, she has great taste. Classic 60's soul (Al Green, Aretha, Motown and Stax), all are present here, as are so many other classic artists. The selection is primarily used, though there is plenty of new vinyl to be found, and while it skews on the Soul, R&B, and Reggae side, you will find Pop, Rock, as well as Dance and other genres represented. If you don't see what you're looking for, be sure to ask the staff. If it can be ordered, they'll be happy to do so. Brixton is lucky to have Pure Vinyl, and when I visit next I'd love to see more of this type of music outlet in London. Maybe even another location?

For my likes, I felt this store just didn't have what I was looking for. Another Flashback location hit it out of the park though, but this store still had some really cool gems! The service at this location was great though. The employees were nice and willing to answer questions, even though the place was busy. Everything was organized really well and it was easy to find the sections/artists that I was looking for. I would definitely come back here the next time I'm in London.

It also has the advantage of being located down the street from two other record shops, so it's like a three-fer. Anyway, Sounds of the Universe is in the most picturesque lovely building standing tall on a corner with an understated yellow "Records" sign pointing people towards the door. They have a wide selection of records that are really nicely organized, and the shop is really bright and clean. My husband said they were very smart because they had the type of record collection that encourages people who are into one style of music to explore and find additional albums that are related within easy reach.

Left my group that I was with and took off to the other side of the city and found this place. It was perfect. Spent a bunch of time talking to the staff and some other patrons about punk in the US and the UK and got some great local recommendations from them (though wish someone had recommended Frank Turner to me then - I was practically on his doorstep and now I love him lol). If you love funk, soul, jazz, Latin, Brazilian, African, Hip-Hop, House, electro, sound libraries, comedy, etc., on vinyl, then you must go there. But they price their stock through the roof and anyone with any experience buying vinyl will recognise titles they can pick up for £5-10 elsewhere at £20-30 here. You could then make the argument that at least its all in mint condition and guaranteed first press, for the collector without time to search out these things for cheaper prices, but even this isn't the case. A copy of Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz that they have for an eye-watering £75 is just the orange/green 1974 reissue, barely worth £20-30. Sleeves are often scuffed and worn. If you like the shop, like the people and don't mind paying over the odds by some 50% or more for the privilege then please patronise this establishment. If you have ever bought a record anywhere else in the world, don't bother.

Rarekind wasn't on Trafalgar street back inn my dj days, but I decided to have a little snoop the other day for old times sake. They specialise in UK/US Hip-hop and vintage funk. There are also complimentary genres such as dub step and soul on the shelves. Whilst I was given a general education into the old school roots of funk from a vinyl head flat mate, I must admit that a lot of the records are not directed at an electronica fan like myself. This being said, there is enough records to satisfy the avid collector who likes nothing more than leafing therough stack after stack of vinyl on a mission for that elusive classic to add to the collection and also for up to date hip hop and dub step dj's who are looking for the latest sounds to play at their next set. The staff were happy for me to sample a handful of funk 45's and my old flat mate would have been able to talk 'shop' to the guy behind the counter for hours. If you are unable to get tot he shop they also offer a mail order service and their website would be a good port of call to get a feel of the type of tunes they are offering. Again, not being a connoisseur of the genres, I reckon you should check it out in person if this kind of music is your thing.

Positioned near the end of Trafalgar Street, it's a friendly shop that's packed with boxes of new and vintage funk, soul, jazz, electro, hip hop, grime, drum'n'bass, disco, reggae, downtempo, dubstep and psychadelic rock. All the records are marked Excellent, Very Good or Good and the prices are reasonable - think £7 for Kraftwerk, £8 for Minnie Riperton and Bettye LaVette. There's a deck near the counter so you can check out your records before you buy them and a small selection of brilliant 45s from specialist record labels like Jazzman and Daptone. They also stock slipmats, needles, headphones and DJ equipment - which is handy for those lucky enough to scratch a living spinning tracks!
