Left my group that I was with and took off to the other side of the city and found this place. It was perfect. Spent a bunch of time talking to the staff and some other patrons about punk in the US and the UK and got some great local recommendations from them (though wish someone had recommended Frank Turner to me then - I was practically on his doorstep and now I love him lol). Anyway, Sounds of the Universe is in the most picturesque lovely building standing tall on a corner with an understated yellow "Records" sign pointing people towards the door. They have a wide selection of records that are really nicely organized, and the shop is really bright and clean. My husband said they were very smart because they had the type of record collection that encourages people who are into one style of music to explore and find additional albums that are related within easy reach.

The woman in the store was very helpful, directed me to a cashpoint so that I could buy the vinyl, took out the discs so that I could check the condition despite my hands being full. When I arrived home I realised that 4 of the 5 records were bootlegs. I was definitely naïve believing that the records were real, but counterfeit records aren't something I've ever encountered before. If you want official pressings, avoid this place.

When i entered, the owner looked particularly cool as he stood behind the counter wearing a shirt and flat cap, carefully trying to examine something on the back of a record sleeve (he was holding right up to his nose). I liked the poster room which is on a split level between the entrance floor and the basement. There were quite a few special editions made by steam power posters that pictured artists such as Bob Dylan and film stars like the 1920s actress Clara Bow. Generally the music seems to lean towards groups from the 1970s and 80s such as the Beatles, the Clash, Trojan records and so on. So no 'nu' stuff here for any young trendy 'scenesters', but a good collection none the less.

This store looked promising, small but promising, however, was disappointed in the selection and the prices for common okay condition titles. The dart board pricing is what confused me to be honest. It was cramped and I didn't have patience for the store after 10 minutes of thumbing through some commons.

Sister Ray is a super cool record store (and conveniently down the street from a few other great…read morerecord stores). My vinyl crazed husband spent some good time in here. So first, this is a two-story store with vinyl downstairs and CDs upstairs. The downstairs is IMPRESSIVELY organized, which just tickled my fancy because I love it when things are organized. All of the sleeves are empty - the records are kept behind the counter downstairs. And even when you walk up with a stack of records, the organization is so good that they can easily locate all of the albums you wish you wish to purchase in a flash. The staff was great and friendly and they really knew their music too. The young man helping us had a deep discussion with my husband about some artists I don't know. It was a really good stop. And bonus points for the cool vintage cassettes painted on the stairwell.

This was my first visit to your shop and I was very nervous nearly leaving without a purchase. Thankfully Liam caught my eye and his professionalism and charming manner made my visit one of the best experiences I have ever had and I am so happy that I entered the shop that day. They stock a wide variety of book from fiction, documentary to cooking and gardening books. The neon sign outside is very cheesy but I love it. Downstairs is a sex shop that sells all sorts of sex paraphernalia, handcuffs, condoms, dvd's you name it and even books on sex.
