Absolute Scammers, they have kept kids in class for over 10 years with years 1 or 2 steps away from black belt then they ADDED more levels on there own after being in business over 5 years, they added many more levels between brown and black, they keep kids tied down for years even though they all meet their qualifications. This is extremely sickening and hurtful to the mental health of these kids. Someone needs to grow a PAIR and do something about it. I have trained with Sensei Avi for almost three decades and have earned two dans (2nd and 3rd degree black belts) under him. Earning a black belt with Sensei Avi is not automatic nor time-bound. One has to put in time and effort not only learning the physical aspects of karate but the biomechanics behind techniques as well. My daughter has been going her for several years. Avi and Ruth care so much about each person and their development. There are classes for all ages and levels. They have a youth team that consistently wins medals at National tournaments. They encourage the kids to help each other. They have leadership training for the kids as well. The teenagers earn points for helping with the kids classes. The studio teaches the kids responsibility generosity and of course champions. My daughter graduated from the kids classes to the adults classes. I still have plenty of praise. Avi and Ruth do such a great job together (and apart), working with students of all stripes (so to speak, haha). There's is a nice combination of discipline, respect for the Art --- as well as for the Self. And yes, fun. Wonderful lessons are being taught here, and, in my opinion, it's more than just Karate. The positive and empowering energy is contagious, and extends to the students. Although most of what I've seen pertains to the younger set, I'm sure this holds true with 'older' crowd. When the Academy is closed for Holidays, they'll usually give you plenty of notice. If there's any doubt, be sure to check with them. Our daughter Lyla (6) started 3 months ago at Rokah. It has changed her very being! She has a vestibular disorder and has been in OT/PT for about a year. Once she started karate with Ruth and Avi she has been soaring in her confidence, impulse control, balance, and self awareness. She can't wait to go to class and see what she will learn. She comes home, show her little brother and us all her new moves with confidence and control. We've been going to this dojo for 3 years now. My son started when he was 6. The dojo is strongly guided by Sensei Avi Rokah, a US and world champion, whose personal touch is everywhere. The dojo is set up relatively simply, without the flyers, t-shirts and disco balls that some other child-oriented businesses have. I love that. I feel like I am with people who are truly concerned about handing over an ancient tradition to the next generation without distractions. Avi has an array of highly qualified, very personable instructors who are all great with kids. They run a firm but fun class with even the youngest kids, but come across as somewhat lethal when sparring amongst themselves in the adult black-belt classes later in the evening. My son has had his behavior challenges in school that spilled out into the karate classes. The dojo staff met the challenge and provided a firm, supportive role in getting him to tow the line.
