Dennis, the main coach, is so knowledgeable and welcoming, he really takes the time to understand his students strengths and build upon that, and he also takes the time to find the weaknesses and help patch that up. I like the class sizes because it is the right balance of one on one instruction and variety of training partners. As a woman in grappling it can be hard to find an environment where you feel comfortable and supported- I have definitely found that here, I feel so at ease training with these guys. This means a lot because jiujitsu is so male dominated, that it's hard to find somewhere suitable to train for women, but this place is. The balance between comfort and hard training is perfect here. I love their sense of community, events and outreach. This gym also does an incredible job at getting students competition ready, the medals speak for themselves.

They have a partnership with Albino and Preto and their gi is so well made and worth the price. Plus the patches with the logos are cool. They also have new promotions going on every month so make sure you send them an email to get on their newsletter and take advantage of that. Os!!!!!

They have women's only open mat from time to time and I think that is so neat. I haven't seen that in other places. The ratio of women is definitely higher than other dojos. So ladies, if you want to find sparring partners, this is definitely the place. It's super clean. Aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Bathrooms are equipped with showers. That's next level stuff. Parking: can be tough sometimes since it's street parking mostly. But definitely not koreatown level difficult. You can find parking.

I especially love Professor Anthony's morning classes - a great group of students, and Anthony's teaching methodology is fantastic - lots of ramping up from drilling to positional sparring, letting students acclimate at their own pace to using the techniques and concepts in progressively more live situations.

It was the most stressful and isolating time of my life, and I was desperate to find community. I used to take karate lessons at ZUltimate Westwood (2005-2011), and reached out to see if any instructors from back then were still around and taking new students. Returning to the Westwood dojo was one of the best decisions of my life. Sensei Jason and Sensei Kim are not only talented martial artists, they are thoughtful educators. They challenge us physically with practical HIT-type workouts like sparring drills, bag work and strength training/conditioning, but also mentally by teaching us how to apply the kenpo forms and techniques we learn to real-life situations. More recently, they've helped me appreciate the more spiritual aspects of 'martial arts': the balance between years of training discipline and respect for tradition, and the unique interpretations that martial artists add to tradition through self-expression. Lessons are set up weekly, either 1-on-1 or with a partner(s). There are also several group classes offered every week for different age ranges (roughly ages 4-6, 7-11, teens and adults classes. There's a filtered water dispenser to keep hydrated, just remember to bring your own water bottle! Always park in the back of the building; there's a free tandem lot, as well as a cheap paid lot right next to that (~$4 for all day parking in some spots, just make sure you read the signs).

This studio has plenty of complaints all over their yelp about horrible billing practices, not offering make-up classes (when out of town), etc. But because it is so close to where we live, I decided to give it a try. When I signed up, I was explicitly told that the membership was month-to-month and that I could cancel at any time. When summer break ended, I called to suspend my membership, but it was very difficult to reach anyone. I called the studio multiple times and left several messages with no response, which made the cancellation process unnecessarily frustrating. Eventually, I reached someone, but I was told that the next month had already been charged and that I would not receive a refund. They agreed to cancel the membership going forward. However, when the following month came, I was charged again. I went into the studio to resolve the issue and was told they use a third-party billing company and that they "have no control" over billing, and that I would need to contact the billing company myself. The staff was unhelpful and took no responsibility for resolving the problem. Based on my experience, this studio seems far more focused on collecting payments than on customer service or student satisfaction. If you're considering joining, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere and being very cautious about their billing practices.

Gracie Beverly Hills (GBH) is a great choice for jiu jitsu, whether you are a beginner or a player…read morewith experience. After researching options, I chose to join this school. If you don't know, GBH is affiliated with Gracie University: the home of BJJ in the United States founded by UFC creator Rorion Gracie, the visionary son of Helio Gracie (the originator of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). In short, if you believe pedigree matters, look no further. Gracie University is now run by Rorion's sons, Ryron and Rener, who continue to develop the Gracie philosophy, which aims to encourage and retain students. Mike Everett, GBH's owner, is a Gracie black belt (search YT for "flowmaster mike") and runs the academy as a "Level 4" training center. This means GBH has programs suited for players with widely different goals. Whether motivated to learn self-defense or prefer to test yourself in competition, there are classes and players here that will work with you to achieve those goals in a friendly and cooperative atmosphere. The Gracie system lets the individual work at his/her own pace. As a Level 4 training center, GBH's program is authorized to instruct in techniques that can lead to the coveted Gracie black belt. At GBH, classes are structured to develop students wholistically, from a Combatives program that teaches the basics to a Masters Cycle program that allows more advanced students to grow. Also, there are private lessons as well as a great kid's program, with students young and old, male and female. All classes are structured to give students exposure to a wide variety of techniques, including the opportunity to test and perfect them through sparring. The facilities are conveniently located in the heart of Beverly Hills, with a friendly staff and patronage. Importantly, the mats are clean and well maintained. Also, there are private changing rooms and showers, which are not always found at other schools. I made the decision to join 5 years ago, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
