Delta BJJ is everything you want in a jiu-jitsu academy--family-owned since the '90s, and it shows in the community they've built. There's a genuine sense of tradition here, balanced perfectly with a modern, relevant game. Whether you train gi or no-gi, you'll find instruction rooted in both old school fundamentals and cutting-edge techniques. The kids program is especially strong--structured, fun, and led by coaches who clearly care about their students' growth on and off the mats. It's a great place for beginners, hobbyists, and serious competitors alike. The environment is welcoming and friendly, but make no mistake--this is also a gym that produces tough, skilled grapplers. As a female grappler, I've always felt safe and supported at Delta. They have a solid number of women training consistently, and the culture is one of respect and inclusion. If you're looking for a place to train hard, learn well, and feel at home, Delta BJJ is it. read more

I have trained at Gerson Sanginitto's BJJ for several years now. It has become a solace for me. It is a home away from home. It is a family! You will not find a gym with better training, better people, better atmosphere, and better leadership. Gerson is not just a teacher. He is truly one of the best people I know. The school is obviously known for the prestigious reputation in BJJ community and for the amount of competitions we win. However, that is not the best thing about the school. The best thing I've witnessed is the countless lives I have seen changed, in the years I have attended Delta BJJ. It's truly a place for everyone, no matter your skill level, age, or ability. Egos are left at the door and everyone is there to learn and help each other learn and become the best we can be. You won't be disappointed!!! read more

While I live in Connecticut, my partner lives in Los Angeles and I visit often. Wanting to be able to train while away from home I found Gerson's, and I am incredibly happy I did. I have trained at many gyms, as I have moved a fair amount. But I have never trained at an academy that is as well rounded as Gerson's. When first attending a new gym you never know exactly what you are getting into. Will the community be welcoming? Will the training be good? Will I come into contact with strong egos? Might I get hurt? Or will partners find the balance between competitiveness and care? But once I arrived at Gerson's all of the worries or concerns went out of the window. Not only were he and his wife incredibly accommodating and welcoming, but so was everybody within the gym. As an instructor and teacher Gerson is incredibly detail oriented. Not just as it relates to technique, but as it relates to each individual within the class. He is observant, clear, and creates a supportive learning environment. He pairs people up with intention, and puts real thought into who will work well together in order to bring the best out of each other. This even applies to rolling, as he pairs people up, and doesn't hesitate when it comes to suggesting who he thinks will be a good training partner for you. I left each class feeling that I not only learned a great deal, but was pushed to step up my game physically, and technically. The classes are also incredibly diverse in terms of background, and gender. I always think the amount of women that a gym has is a great measure of the community culture - as jiujitsu can and does attract some toxic individuals. Gerson's community attracts a diverse array of people for a reason - because it has a healthy, supportive, and inclusive vibe. Each time I come back to Gerson's after training at my local gym for a while, it is truly like a breath of fresh air, for it highlights just how much thought, care, expertise, and consciousness are needed to facilitate amazing training. Gerson's has all of this and more, and you would be lucky to train here. read more

Delta BJJ not only is a great gym but also a warm community. My 6 year old son is obsessed with this place and with all the professors who are incredibly kind and warm. Not to mention their impressive skills and knowledge. Gerson and Carina deserve all the success and I'm so proud and fortunate to be able to call this our gym. BJJ brought my son confidence and crucial life skills. Thank you guys and congratulations!! read more

I traveled to LA for the week and met Professor Gerson by chance. He invited me to train at his academy and it was a great experience. Not only is the Professor a very skilled, well-known, and highly respected member of the Jiujitsu community, he is also very friendly, patient, and generous in his approach, making sure each student is able to grasp and follow the techniques he's presenting, from beginner to advanced. His teen class was leaving as our class began and I noticed each of them seemed confident, happy, and respectful. There were also several women in our class, which is not always common in other academies. I take it as a good sign that each of them were comfortable and skilled. The overall atmosphere is very welcoming and the training environment feels exciting and encouraging. The academy itself is organized and very clean with ample facilities, including a bathroom, shower, and changing rooms. I'm very grateful to Professor Gerson for inviting me to train with him and his team. read more

Delta BJJ - Gi Jacket and third degree white belt! - Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Near Me - Culver City, California

My second home for the last 10 1/2 years. This is more that just a great place to learn the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it's a place to build lasting friendships, to be part of a team; a second family. I'm still friends with guys I met when I walked in the doors January 2007. Gerson Sanginitto is a top-notch coach from the old-school days of Jiu-Jitsu down in Rio. He learned from the best and has been passing down his love and knowledge of it for the past 20 years here on the westside. His gym is very spacious with large clean mats as well as weights and equipment in the back next to the bathroom and shower. His place has everything you need to get a great workout in. He's got a ton of different classes in the morning (6am, 10am) and evenings (6pm, 7pm) so there's no excuse not to show up. Come on down, learn, roll hard, slap high-fives, then do it all over again the next day. There's no secret to success. Just show up and put in the work. read more

Great place to learn Brazilian jiu jitsu. Starting such a physical martial art can be intimidating for anyone, but before starting I was particularly worried about injury since I had a bad knee injury wrestling in high school. Knew I had always wanted to do it, and after meeting Gerson and taking a couple free trial classes it seemed like the right fit. It's no secret that LA / Southern California has amazing jiu jitsu and a ton of options. Before signing up I had checked out a few other locations and this spot really stood out to me for a few reasons: 1) Welcoming atmosphere 2) Tough yet careful training (especially for beginners) 3) Affordable 4) Quality instruction in both traditional self defense / Gracie jiu jitsu, no gi, & sport bjj 5) As a relatively smaller academy you get good attention and guidance 6) Morning and night classes every weekday 7) Multiple black belt instructors who are great people, which trickles down and builds a positive culture 8) Nice & clean mats The head instructor Gerson is a 5th degree BJJ black belt as well as a judo black belt and an awesome human being. Highly recommend this spot. read more

LOVE IT!! where else can you take out your aggression on your boyfriend and get a blue belt for it??!! Just kidding!! I started coming to this place 2 years ago when my brother and I decided to take jiu jitsu classes, we went to one place in Santa Monica which shall remain nameless and they do not allow women in their classes, they don't even allow you to watch! what the heck! My brother was willing to join but he gave me a week to find an even better place for us to go to. Thank goodness for Mixed Martial Arts Center, the people there are amazing! So professional and friendly, when you go in they make you feel very welcomed. I reviewed and researched a lot of places around West L.A so I know that they have the best prices and people here. They also teach Tae Kwon Do there, both the Jiu Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do instructors are amazing. Here is a link to the schedule http://www.mmacenter.com/ read more

Great school! I've been around or have taken several different martial arts over many years. So I have seen many schools. Came in two weeks ago and just sat down and observed. First thing I noticed before talking to anyone was a very positive atmosphere. Everyone was working hard and was happy to be there. Several instructors or higher ranking students were helping out the newer people. Very cool. Clean well kept place. Liked it. Gerson is the owner /master instructor. Each time I have been there so far, if Gerson is not teaching he is monitoring the black belt who is and is assisting out on the floor with students. Karina is another black belt there and helps out with teaching and talking to people who are interested in taking classes. Every time I've been there she is there helping especially with the kids classes. I haven't seen that many black belts assisting in teaching class in a long time. I liked that A LOT. All too often in many schools in many martial arts styles, there is one teacher per class and not enough individual attention for students. Not here though. Lots of help for the students. Overall a great place for adults and kids so we signed our little guy up for classes read more

Karina and Gerson are the best! I took two trial classes (yes they offer 2 free ones instead of 1) and love the vibe, the class set up, and most importantly people there! They made sure I was able to learn something when coming in as a total newbie, and not being scared away. Unfortunately I had injury from previous workout and it seems to restrict a movement that's used frequently in BJJ. I'm not sure if I would be lucky to go back, but this is a fun sport, a serious martial art that's highly practical, and people here know the best! Absolutely recommend to give it a try read more

Gerson is hands down the best professor and so are his black belts. Gerson focuses on sharpening technique, building confidence, self-defense and character. When I started 4 years ago, I was so nervous and scared to try jiu jitsu because I was the only woman in the class, this lasted for about 2 years. I really love this academy and Delta BJJ really welcomed my family with open arms. My confidence has grown so much because Gerson saw and continues to see my potential. I am a blue belt and hope/will become Gerson's first female black belt. I 100% recommend trying the class and committing to Delta BJJ. read more

There are a ton of Taekwondo schools in Los Angeles, but one has to look very carefully to find quality. Most of the top TKD masters and teams reside far away in places like Chatsworth, Diamond Bar, and the OC. Choi's TKD Club offers a school that is close to the LA area and provides top notch instruction and family atmosphere. A checklist for someone looking to get into TKD (which is a great way to get in shape, learn an Olympic sport and Korean martial art, and up your daily energy level): 1. Is the instructor good - Check. James Choi is a former U.S. national team member at middleweight, and a medalist in many national/international competitions. He was also the coach of the Penn State TKD team. He's a great instructor, infinitely patient, but also willing to push everyone to their realistic limits. 2. Is the atmosphere welcoming - Check. The school is a great place. Everyone is friendly, and everyone trains seriously. They go out of their way to help newbies in, and there is a great family atmosphere here. 3. Is the quality of training up to par - Check. It is invaluable to have a former world class fighter teach you the art and sport of TKD. I highly recommend Master Choi as an instructor. And there are classes for every experience level, the classes are intense, and everyone trains hard to improve each other. I know there are several junior competitors, at the school right now, who are talented and working to breakout in national competitions. So the training partners are great here. 4. Is it affordable - Definitely. CTC was the best combination of top-quality and affordable membership fees in LA that I found. Overall, this is the best place in the near Los Angeles area to learn and train in Taekwondo. Go check it out! An added plus is that CTC has also partnered with Gerson Sanginitto, to also offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu if you also want some grappling experience. read more

I cannot believe that there aren't more reviews of this place. I've been driving past the school for about ten years and finally decided to pop in and check it out mid-week. The head instructor (Gerson Santiginitto) was there and about to teach a class. He took some time to chat with me. I found him warm and friendly. I went back to the school the next week mid-day to play on the mat. Gerson was friendly and low-key. The other students (ranging from beginning to advanced) were also friendly and helpful. The class format is structured like a typical martial arts class: warm up drills, technical skill work, then sparring. I watched the sparring (as it was suggested I not participate yet) and would describe it as a moderate intensity. No one was out of control or lost control. More importantly, everyone appeared to be be cognizant of his partner's safety. I think the sparring was even stopped in one instance to prevent a possible injury. The facilities are fine (a large room with a mat on the floor) with changing area (no shower facility at this time). The cost to train here is an absolute steal. (This is quite an understatement.) On top of that, Gerson offered to let me train a couple of times before making a decision. There's not a single thing not to like. But everyone is different. If you're looking for a place to train you should check this place out. read more

I am a Blue Belt in this place. I own a Martial Arts studio(tae kwon do) but I go here to get a good workout and a high level Jiujitsu training. No egos here and if there is, they are quickly checked by the Blackbelts. ***update***. I'm putting this on top for a reason - the fact that it skipped my mind to even mention I am female speaks to the fact that it just wasn't even a factor here. I was welcomed by both the males and females. Did not experience catty women or piggish men at all. It seems we are all just seen as just humans of different sizes here. From the perspective of a day 1 white belt. This isn't the flashiest place but it's very welcoming and that attitude starts from the top down. I did some research and found that there are quite a few bjj gyms in so cal - lucky me. While that gives me plenty of options, it also means I had some homework to do. I read some reviews and picked 2 gyms to visit. This place very close to my home so I've seen them in there quite often. I walked in and was greeted by Gerson - he's incredibly welcoming and it's immediately apparent that he's there because he loves the sport and wishes to share it with people who have a desire to learn. He interacts with everyone in his school like they're family - he's very friendly but definitely well respected by his students. He keeps and eye on how they are doing and is invested in their progress. I showed up for the first class and everyone was more than willing to help. Obviously on day 1, it can be rather intimidating, especially if you don't know anyone there and are just coming in off the street. There was never a moment when I felt like I was being ignored or left to hang when I didn't understand what was happening. I really didn't even have a chance to get lost cuz someone would come up and show me what to do or ask if i wanted to go over the exercise with them as soon as everyone started. It wasn't just one or two people either. I had no less than 5 or 6 people do this. I'm very much an introvert and a bit older than your average beginner but these guys were amazing. Now for the details regarding the school and not just my experience. They do not push a year commitment. In fact, it was never proposed as an option. Other schools will give you several prices, the best being if you commit to a full year up front. I won't post the prices here but I will say that you'll do well to check into this place if that is a factor. I was offered 2 trial classes and they did not try to rent me a gi. They just had loaners for new people. Also, there was a variety of different colored gis in the class - you can wear whatever color makes you happy. ** if you buy their gi, buy it a at least a size up. I bought mine, was told to try it on, Gerson said it was good and 2 washes later, the sleeves that were2 inches too short are now 6 inches too short and the back no longer fits at all. From reading around, apparently they shrink - unless they are preshrunk. Now how are you going to know if the ones that sell are or aren't? Or even that they shrink at all if you are new and needing to buy their gi. First bjj lesson learned. Don't expect them to tell you if the uniforms they sell will fit you next week. Gerson has been teaching for a couple of decades, he's involved in teaching the classes and provides a great example to the students. The students - they were all immediately welcoming. There didn't seem to be a cliquish vibe and it didn't seem like anyone was standoffish at all. Things that were nice but not a huge factor, given the inviting atmosphere and people - good mix of different levels in the class, wear what you want - as long as it's appropriate bjj gear, cancel with 30 days notice - things happen in life, these guys get it and aren't going to penalize you for it. You know that the people who are there are recommitting every month because they want to be there. Nobody is just showing up because they've signed up for a year and feels like it's a waste of money if they don't go. I don't know how long I'll be doing bjj (my first love will be surfing and I'm older so my body may not cooperate with the things I want it to do) but the people here have me wanting to come back after the first day. read more

Gerson and Sky are great instructors and everyone in the school is friendly and fun to roll with. The hours work well for professionals who don't get off work until 6pm. There is no pressure to roll if you're not ready and egos are all checked at the door. I had to move out of state so I'm no longer at this school, but it's one of the things I miss most about living in Los Angeles. I hope to move back soon and resume my training with Gerson and Sky! read more

I started BJJ here about 4 weeks ago and I love it. It takes some guts to get over the awkwardness that is BJJ, and to let go of your ego and accept that you will suck for a while. But the instructors Gerson and Sky do a great job at letting you feel like there's no failure, only learning. And also the students at the school do a great job at making you feel at ease. The thing that made me go to Gerson's school was the schedule which is better than most places. But I'm happy I came here. See you soon! read more
