I am terrified of major haircuts. I have had very long hair most of my life, and my fear stems from…read moresome awful experiences: the man in Southampton who was later arrested for selling hair (he chopped mine to my shoulders, which was NOT what I wanted, and my mother had left and gone shopping), the guy in Boston, on Newbury Street, who butchered it, and some lady who didn't listen and layered the back of my head instead of just around my face. Arrrrggghhh. So I approach haircuts with caution.
Javier has been cutting my mother's hair for several years. We all have terrible Irish tempers, and she said that if I didn't like it, she would go live in the warehouse (in Queens, long story). I informed Javier that my mother's living situation was at stake, and he laughed and said, "You're going to love it." I showed him a couple of pictures of styles that I liked, and after his wife, Elena washed my hair, he hacked off a giant chunk of hair. Aieeeee! And then he pinned up several sections, and the scissors flashed and flashed. Huge pieces of hair fell on the floor. There was some discussion about bangs, and Javier said that he would cut long ones, and it would take 30 seconds to make them shorter. I eventually decided against bangs. I always want them, then I hate them and grow them out. Oh well.
The cut turned out REALLY well :) Javier did a fantastic job blow-drying, and my hair is bouncy and shiny. Also much lighter in weight. It was very long and heavy. I do look different. In fact, my brother's doorman didn't recognize me until I took off my sunglasses. He said, "You look different!" I said, "Haircut," and he said, "You look great!" So that was nice. I haven't tried putting it up yet, but I did tell Javier that I always pin it up to sleep or for Pilates. So it should work.
Javier used to work with actors and models, and showed me a couple of pictures. The space here is very clean and modern, all black and white, and minimalist. He does color, too, and noted that mine was uneven. Oops. I may go back and have him fix it, if I have time. The Mommy and I are very busy.
