East Cooper OB and Medical Center are the only people that I would see. In fact, I literally moved…read moreso that I could come back to Dr. Williamson and to deliver at East Cooper. Dr. Williamson at E.C. Ob delivered my twins and she was such a God send. There were some unexpected developments in the pregnancy and I really feel like I could not have gotten through it without her and the rest of my care team at the hospital. They were all so kind and empathetic, they really went above and beyond. Which is why when we found out we were having another (happy surprise ) we literally moved to be seen here again. Obviously God had opened up other opportunities as well but the pregnancy and having good care was a huge propelling factor in our move and decision to come back to Charleston. My second experience was also fantastic. Not as exciting, more routine but I still got to have Dr. Williamson and everything was wonderful again. I just feel so cared for with them and I wish I could have had these experiences with all of my deliveries. Could not sing their praises enough, and I will always recommend them. Not just Dr. Williamson but all the ladies in the practice! They were so nice and I would have been happy to have any of them take care of me.

Dr. Jennifer Heinemann was extremely condescending, did not listen to my wants or needs, and did not explain options that are ultimately affecting my health. Upon the first visit, I felt rushed & formed no "connection" to any nurse or doctor. Everything was gone over extremely fast, I was given no advice or information outside of a pamphlet and spent the most time during the visit talking to the woman at the front desk taking my payment. This was my first pregnancy and I didn't know what questions to even think about asking. I decided to continue going as maybe it was just one bad experience. We went back for the next appointment and they made my fiancé leave the room, I understand why this is done, but for a girl who felt no connections to anyone in this office and didn't want him to leave, it felt like they were forcing him out. It made him feel less of a part of the pregnancy as well. I know from switching that there are better ways to establish with a patient that they are in a healthy/happy relationship. I switched to MUSC & had a great experience. It is now almost a year from my appointments at LowCountry and a bill shows up (keep in mind, I paid at every appointment). I got billed twice for "96127 Brief Emotional/Behav Assmt." I called for clarification on what this was and the number on the bill isn't even registered to their billing department. So I call the office, the lady who answers was kind, pulled the bill up, and attempted to explain it as the sheet we fill out in the office and the doctor recommending a therapist to me. I told her I never had anything emotional or behavior concerns and no one was recommended to me and she continued to say "it's just the sheet" so i clarified and said "so i filled the sheet out twice?" and she followed up with "it's just insurance billing because we have to bill for that sheet." At this point, I am paying the bill and going to be done. If you want quick care with no connections and hidden fees, this would be a place for you. However, I was looking for a doctor to feel comfortable with and who cared enough to listen and educate me, as well as allowing my partner to be involved. This office is just looking at how much they can charge for every service provided and then don't even give their office enough knowledge and training to explain the bill when people ask. I, personally, wouldn't recommend either office to anyone.

I had a very concerning experience at East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant involving a…read morenurse who identified herself as Wendy. My cousin, a Puerto Rican American, came to the ER with severe abdominal/side/back pain and was visibly crying and in significant distress. She called me earlier that evening crying and asking for help. When I arrived at approximately 11:00 PM, I personally observed that she was still in severe pain and distress. What concerns me most is that it was not until after I arrived, spoke with the nursing staff, and requested that another nurse assist my cousin that she received medication from a different nurse. After that nurse, Nicki, administered the medication, I personally watched my cousin finally begin to get relief. She was able to sit up, talk to me, and most importantly, she was no longer crying and visibly suffering from the severe pain she had been experiencing. That made the earlier lack of relief especially concerning to me. I had also requested that Wendy no longer care for my cousin because my cousin had become uncomfortable with the way she was being treated. Despite that request, Wendy returned to the room. My cousin was asking reasonable questions about how long she would have to wait for her ultrasound. She was already extremely anxious and began visibly shaking. Instead of helping calm the situation, Wendy told her to "stop acting like a child and start acting like an adult." I found that completely inappropriate toward a patient who was already experiencing severe pain and distress. I was also concerned that medication was brought into the room without a clear explanation of what it was before my cousin took it. I believe patients should be clearly informed about medications they are being given. Eventually, another nurse came into the room and treated my cousin with kindness and professionalism. That nurse even apologized for what had happened earlier. The contrast between the two interactions was significant. To be clear, my concern is not simply that the ER could not immediately determine the cause of my cousin's pain. We understand that emergency medicine involves testing and uncertainty. My concern is how my cousin was treated while she was seeking care and particularly the fact that she remained in severe distress until after I intervened and another nurse provided medication, after which I personally witnessed a significant improvement in her condition. We are still waiting to submit a formal complaint to ask the hospital to review the entire encounter, including the medication administration record, nursing documentation, and staff conduct. If you visit this ER, advocate for yourself, ask questions about medications before taking them, and bring someone you trust with you if possible. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect when they are at their most vulnerable.
