Dr Washington is a rare breed of doctor! I am so grateful for his knowledge, insights, and approach to treatment. My adult children had worked with him over the years on issues as diverse as anxiety, headaches, and sleep problems. But until recently I had not had an opportunity to visit Dr. Washington myself. However, this year I developed problems with pain in various parts of my back, neck, arms, and ribs as well as problems eating. Kaiser spent months putting me through all manner of uncomfortable tests. All the results kept coming back "normal." But I knew I didn't feel normal. So I reached out to Doctor Washington's office and was thrilled to learn that he was now specializing in providing second opinions for difficult health issues. The receptionist was reassuring and supportive and scheduled an appointment for the same week. She asked me to send all my labs, tests, and procedures to his office so he could review them in advance. On the day of my appointment Dr Washington spent 90+ minutes asking questions, listening to me and making sure I felt all my fears and concerns were heard. And then, HE TOLD ME WHAT WAS WRONG and how to fix it. I felt somewhat better immediately because I knew what was going on and what could be done to help which greatly reduced my anxiety. Over the next few weeks he addressed both my pain and my eating problems and showed me how both were connected to the Central Sensitization diagnosis he'd made. Doctor Washington is a genius and he is willing to take the time to explain, demonstrate, and otherwise educate his patients so they can be responsible participants in their own healing and recovery. Dr Washington is weird, money hungry and unprofessional. But the receptionist is just wonderful!! he don't care for his patient well being. Initially I brought my son in so that he can check his immunization card to see what vaccines he needs and get lab work. After complaining he finally gave me lab order but refuse to look at his immunization card cuz according to him I didn't mention that during the conversation with him. I had mention that that his the main reason before booking appt. And guess what Dr Washington said that's not the case he said I need to make another appt. I see what he's trying to do...having us come back or zoom multiple times so he can bill my insurance and collect copay. Dr Washington knows how important sleep is to a long life. He correctly diagnosed me with sleep apnea and then he led me to Pooja Goel, who devised a mandibular advancement device for me. Awful. He's totally in this for the insurance money. Loves his handouts so he can spend less time with patients and move on to the next one. Book an appointment with him and he will have is PA treat you instead. That's totally not okay. Loves to push whatever the drug du jour is that he's getting a kickback for. I went to see Dr. Washington a month ago for my congestion and cough. He was very throughly explained everything why Im gettinf congested and coughing. Very nice doctor. The appointment lasted 30 minutes. His approach lean more toward natural not medicine which is good if you want a natural treatment. If you're looking for a doctor that explain to you everything and take his time. I recommended Dr. W. The 3 stars is for the doctor. I took two stars off for the staff. The staff seemed to be inexperienced. I asked them a question and they looked all confused. After the appointment, they were supposed to send me my allergy spray to my pharmacy but they didn't. I am conflicted regarding Dr. Washington. I cannot cite a specific short coming in the actual care that I received, but there were issues that were based on his bias' and not my condition. An example is as follows: 1. Every issue must related to the fact that I do not sleep enough. In my first or second appointment with him I mentioned that when I was younger I had issues sleeping. He seized upon this and it became the central point of every discussion. The issue was that he refused to accept the fact that an inability to sleep had not been an issue for many years and I currently sleep 8-9 hours a night. 2. He prescribed a change in medicine dosage for me and on my next appointment I told him it appears to be effective as I was feeling better. He was almost offended in his response and proceeds to tell me how most people react much more excitedly about the improvement. I can only assume that I must not have given him the ego strokes for effective treatment he was looking for when I told him that the change was effective and didn't thank him for changing my life. The other issue I have is his communication style that borders on 'autistic' in its detachment and awkward pauses. I was a patient of his for several years, luckily I did not have to visit him often ~ but when I did, he seemed informed and educated, but completely unapproachable. When I tried to engage in discussion over an ailment I felt like he was trying to talk down to me, as well as cut me off ~ I always felt like every meeting was a wast of his time. I was getting divorced and my soon to be ex visited him for her regular appointment (he was our family doctor.) She told him about our divorce. When she came home she told me she would not tell me what he said, but that I should never see him again and change doctors immediately. This is an update review. My daughter and husband have both had their lives transformed by sticking with this doctor!!! His methods are not the "quick in; quick out" type that the average doc uses these days. He'll ask you questions & put you through "remedies" which may seem unrelated, but end up getting you on to real healing, truly restful sleep, and then will continue to coach you throughreal life transformation over the years. Because of Dr. Roger W's interventions he not only saved my daughters life, but has continued to follow up with her by phone (& infrequently in-person when she can fly back to Santa Clara, cuz we moved away). At one point she was not sleeping more than an hour per night for an entire year before she thought to call Dr. Roger again. In 2 weeks he had her sleeping again at night and continues to follow up with her. Who does that anymore? His office people are very intelligent & always communicate what we call about accurately. Dr. W will also help you unravel the web of concerns you may be experiencing about your health overall, instead of trying to force you to just choose one or two issues per visit. Thank goodness! He is a healthy, spiritual man whom women can trust. I LOVE DR. WASHINGTON and his staff! I called in for a same day check-up because I was EXTREMELY SICK and they totally squeezed me into their super hectic schedule. I've never felt rushed while being there and I've never had to wait longer than 2 minutes to be seen. 5 stars for my primary care physician. The office is great and the staff is organized, so quick things like vaccinations are quick and easy. They have Relay Health, so you can also communicate with them online if you wish. Dr. Washington himself has a great attitude to medicine, he takes a big picture view and is not the "let's run a bunch of expensive tests" person. I guess he could make more money by being more conventional but that would just be sad. But this also means you have to be engaged as a patient and take responsibility for your health. I don't write reviews ever, but I had an exceptionally unpleasant experience at Dr. Washington's office. I went to Dr. Washington with my mother. As soon as he came into the room, he greeted my mother in Chinese. I understand that he was trying to be polite and show respect for the culture, except it came off the wrong way because we're not Chinese, we're Korean lol. I was astounded by his ignorance. But this was only the beginning of the appointment... I came to see Dr. Washington to get my hair loss checked out. He asked me to think back to when it started and tried to make me convince myself that I was incredibly stressed -- and that stress was the cause of my hair loss. He kept probing me with questions to shape my diagnosis around stress. He then convinced me that sleep deprivation is the culprit of my stress, and he proceeded to endorse his book to me. At the end of the appointment, all he did was tell me to apply an over-the-counter treatment and to practice relaxation methods. I lost hope with my condition and I just decided to wait it out. But I recently saw another doctor who was able to treat my condition effectively through blood tests and legitimate treatment. While Dr. Washington's diagnosis was probably somewhat relevant (it's a no-brainer that stress contributes to ANY health condition), it was not what I needed. Even my new doctor was shocked at how I hadn't gotten the proper treatment prior. TLDR: He ignorantly assumed my nationality, gave me a generic diagnosis, tried selling his book to me, and overall, gave me a very uncomfortable vibe. read more

I commute from San Francisco to Santa Clara to see Dr. Washington. It takes awhile for me to find someone I am comfortable with. He is knowledgeable, caring, and explains the why's of your situation. He asks the question, and listens to what you have to say. I need someone to look me in the eye and tell me what is going on, not give me an antibiotic and say have a nice day. Reading reviews about Dr. Washington being a "holistic" doctor is actually comical given that on the one occasion I saw him he tried so very hard to push antidepressants on me by claiming I might be bipolar. This happened in 2000. It's been one of my go-to party anecdotes ever since. This is what happened: my mom was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Her gastroenteroligist had asked me if I also had GERD and when I said "yes" he suggested I get an endoscopy. At the time I was on HMO insurance. I was 30 and healthy. So I needed a referral for the endoscopy. My regular doc, Dr. Washington's partner at the time, was unavailable so I just made an appointment with Washington since I was only seeking a referral. The appointment started with me explaning all of this. Then Dr. Washington proceded down the weirdest path. "Do you feel depressed sometimes?" "Well, yeah, my mom was just diagnosed with cancer." "Do you have mood swings? Feeling really sad and then really happy?" "Well, I don't know. I have a new boyfriend (who's now my husband of 16 years) so that makes me happy." I was confused about the line of questions. I just needed a referral for an endoscopy. What does this have to do with anything? But he was building his case. Next he says something like: "You might be bipolar" or some string of words suggesting I may be bipolar. (For the record, no doctor before or since has ever suggested this. And in fact, when I have shared this story with doctors whom I have come to trust over the years, well, they laugh. Anyway, so, aggravated, I asked: "so how do you differentiate what you're talking about with just the normal reaction to everyday life? I have a new boyfirend:Yay! My mom is dying, sad...." His answer was to start asking about my moodiness with menstruation. "Do you get PMS?" After that I tuned him out. I concluded he was a quack who had an agenda and I just needed to let him flap his gums so I could walk out of there with the referral I needed. Oh, and of course, I left with a script and samples for Zoloft. I came home and regaled my boyfriend with this crazy story and we had a good laugh at how bizarre the whole thing was. BUT SERIOUSLY...WTF??? So, back then there was no Yelp. No way for me to share this experience beyond the my usual cocktail party banter. I never went back to Dr. Washington's partner, by the way, because I never wanted to bump into Dr. Washington again. The memory was triggered tonight because I was watching the movie "Love and Other Drugs" with Anne Hathway and Jake Gylenhall about how unethical the pharma industry is in how they influence doctors to write prescriptions. When the movie came out in 2010 I told everyone to watch it because it's true....the whole pushing samples on patients that's portrayed in the movie. I still can't believe I went in to Dr. Washington for an endoscopy referral and came out with script for Zoloft. By the way, my endoscopy came up clean. My mom lived six more years and died of a different type of cancer. I had three miscarriages and my brother died at 53 of a horrible neurodegenerative disorder that left him unable to walk, talk or swallow and I was one of his primary caregivers. I have never taken an antidepressant to this day. I have seen the same primary doc for about 15 years through all that crap and she has never pushed antidepressants on me (tho she's offered them during some of those trying times) and she's NEVER suggested I was bipolar. She literally laughed when I told her the story. Be careful when a doctor doesn't listen to you or seems to have an agenda. I know it's hard to make money in the medical field these days but imposing medicine or treatments a patient doesn't need is not the answer. read more

I am an International medical graduate, did my observership under Dr. Washington. I would say he is the best teacher I ever had, who taught me how to be confident rather than just saying be confident. He is an excellent doctor when it comes to clinical diagnosis and the way he approaches patients inspired me. He taught us how to pay attention to detail in each and every aspect of a patient's history and examination findings. Every hour I spent in this rotation was worth it, learned a lot from Dr. Washington. It's not the rotation where we just shadow physicians, we had a well-organized and structured curriculum. All our batchmates gave presentations weekly once and got detailed feedback from Dr. Washington, that was a wonderful opportunity to improve our communication and presentation skills. If anybody wants to find a meaningful rotation/ US clinical experience, I would highly recommend Dr. WashingtonExternship/Observership program. read more

He has said things about sleep, rest, and stress that have really amazed me and made me change the way I think about my health. I went to Dr. Washington based on the reviews on Yelp. I'm new to the area and was looking for a good long term doctor. Honestly, the experience was great right up until meeting Dr. Washington. I have to say, the staff is very courteous, and the wait wasn't long, and explained some of the insurance stuff for me ( I'm from the land of socialized medicine). Anyway, then I met Dr. Washington. He more or less interrogated me on my medical history. When I didn't answer fast enough, he would provide increasingly absurd answers until I blurted something out. example: Him: How many glasses of alcohol do you drink? Me: Well, let's see.. Him: 1? 2? 5? 10? Me: No! And don't even try not remembering the names of previous medical problems. He will not be very amused with you. It seemed to me he was not interested in having me as a patient. He was evasive when I asked him about a treatment that his staff recommended me to ask him about. There was another review on here that said he was rude and condescending which has disappeared. I wouldn't say he was rude, just terse, which comes off as condescending. It seems from the other reviews that if you have some sort of crippling long-term ailment he'll fix you right up. If you're just looking for a friendly doctor to keep up regular checkup, then look elsewhere. I know I will. read more

Very unprofessional. Went in for a simple visit that should take 30 minutes. .took 2 hours. Had nothing but issues with insurance, had to give informative several times. Front staff unfamiliar with billing practices. The last straw was receiving personal information in the mail from them where they decided not to seal the envelope. I can't say that I really enjoyed my experience at Dr. Washington's office. This was partly my fault, I should have researched him more, then I would have found out that he is a holistic doctor and made an appointment with another doctor. I went in for a sinus infection, I walked out with nasal spray and a recommendation to listen to meditation CDs...I was hoping for an antibiotic. Anyhow, Dr. Washington did have some positives and explained why I have migraines and that some of the things I had experienced in the past were directly related to the migraines. He pointed out some good lifestyle changes to make. I think if I had gone in for prevention and diagnosis of migraines, I would have been more pleased. He also spent a lot of time with me for a first visit, which I think is commendable, I did not feel rushed through the appointment. If its a quick solution you need today, he may not be the place to go to. I found it very hard to communicate with him, because he takes everything too literally and if you don't answer fast enough or detailed enough, he jumps to his own conclusions about you. IMHO, he does more jumping to conclusions than listening. If you like holistic doctors, you will probably like him, but if you are looking for your standard doctor that prescribes medication as opposed to a long treatment plan based on alternative medicine and lifestyle changes...you are probably better off going to see a different doctor. read more

Not sure how good Dr Washington is: my family and I were there for the green card process, so we experienced the relation with the nurse/secretary. The service is very slow (an hour to sign a paper) and the nurse is very messy. We had to send her the documents twice and she misread my husband's shots card so she told him he had to take a shot that he already had in December... Plus she kept on calling us telling what we needed to have been done instead of checking everything immediately and letting us do it all at once. My husband lost several hours of work.... read more

Dr. Washington changed my life. Literally. I was at stanford for almost a year and a half and was severely ill for 2 1/2 years. I was diagnosed with almost 10 different diseases and came to Dr. Washington at 94 pounds. I had 6 different specialist at stanford but after seeing Dr. Washington my health was completely different after a month. You definitely have to see him with an open mind, but if you give him a chance, I promise you, your health will improve and you won't regret it. I found Dr. Washington while searching for a doctor near home and I am so far very pleased with my experience. I have visited Dr. Washington for regular check ups, treatment for a sports injury, and to discuss irregular chest pains and each time I have left satisfied with the treatment I received. Dr. Washington's approach is to talk to you about your ailment make you understand the hows, whys and whens of your situation. I prefer this over being prescribed medication any day! The staff is courteous, the office is clean and I have never had to wait more than 15 minutes to see the doctor. It comes down to what type of doctor you prefer to see. If you are looking for a quick medicine fix, Dr. Washington is probably not the right doctor for you. Well, Let me start by saying I been a patient of Dr Washington for about 10 years, I have R.A. ( Rheumatoid Arthritis ) and had to take a medical retirement due to R.A. and some work related injuries. Doctor Washington has been telling me for years about my sleeping pattern and how it could help my condition, but I never took it seriously only to suffer more because of lack of belief I even took his sleep class on the weekend but, never took the steps to put it into practice. Ten years later I decide to follow it and long and behold my R.A. is in control and I am off of all R.A. medications, that I believe was making me sick, i feel great and now convinced in his Sleep matters is the key to my success. The reason I decided to write about it was because like many of you I was wondering if this Doctor is a Quake and many of times considered should I call him or not because my sleep issue will come up, I'm so glad that he never give up on me and that I stay with him, About 8 years ago I had a Staph infection that was pretty bad and took about 4-5 antibiotics to cure it and Dr Washington was the Doctor that Help me overcome that, Thank You Doctor Washington, it took me a while to get on board but,once I did, I been reaping the rewards, I have have lots of energy, solid sleep, less flares and a life worth living even with R.A. I am new to the area so I went through several doctors before I found one I felt comfortable with. I have had the same doctors back home for 12 years, so I was looking for a person with similar work ethics. Dr. Washington and his staff are AMAZING! I went to see him after a trip to the emergency room. I had a pretty good scare and the doctor completely eased my fears. He sat and talked with me for over an hour. He answered all of my questions and showed a great deal of compassion. On my follow-up appointment, he again spent a great deal of time with me to see how I was doing. I have never been to a dr who takes so much time to listen to their patients.
