I'm in the process of tooth removal/dental implant procedures with Dr. McDonald. I mainly went to…read morehim because my Dentist refered him and a friend who works with dentures/implants said he rated good. Long story short, my front tooth was failing from an injury almost 30 years. After getting assessed in an initial consult, getting second opinions, etc. I went with Dr. MacDonald and had the first part done almost 6 months after the initial consult, I chose that because of work obligations and my wife was getting a graduate degreee and I wanted to look ok in the pictures. I just had part 1) tooth removal in June, and his staff seemed to do a good job. I was put out and the process wasn't too painful, I filled prescriptions of antibiotics and painkillers that day. I coordinated with my dentist to get a temporary piece (or stayplate) a couple days after the intial procedure. So far good. My dental insurance from work covers a little bit of the expenses but the majority of dental insurances don't really cover it, they mainly do preventative care (cleanings and fillings). I had already put some into my FSA/HSA, unfortunately the timing of when I scheduled was after open-enrollment so I wish I had set aside more funds. Like I said, so far so good, and it's my front tooth so it'd be nice if it looked and felt good.

Just no. From the first visit I felt things were amiss, but tried to give the benefit of the doubt…read more My mistake. First, I requested sedation due to anxiety and the type of work I needed. Obviously, I would need someone to drive me home. I just moved to the bay, and didn't know anyone yet, so I asked if I could take an Uber. One of the assistants said it shouldn't be a problem and she would confirm w the dentist and follow up w me. Never happened. The front desk receptionist took the invoice I signed and when I asked for a copy, she said she would email to me. Never happened. Now....weeks later I finally confirm an appointment w them. Why now? Because I asked a family member to fly in from SoCal, perform as my designated driver and care for me afterwards. I made this very clear when I made the appointment. The receptionist confirmed the appointment with me and provided me with both aftercare instructions, as well as the prep. The morning of, I arrived - ready. Immediately I was told, "Oh. It looks like you will just be getting your wisdom tooth pulled today. The doctor wants to give you more X-rays to determine if we need to bring a surgeon in." Um, what?? I asked her why I was never told this, and explained to her that my family member flew in, because I was supposed to get everything I needed done in one appointment. In fact, when I booked the appointment, I mentioned both procedures I was supposed to get, and it was confirmed! Not to mention the fact that I requested 3 days of PTO from work. Because wtf would I need someone to drive me home for a wisdom tooth?! I've had a wisdom tooth pulled before and didn't need sedation and drove myself home! I requested sedation this time because I was getting my freaking gums cut open for an implant! Totally different level!! I was offered no apology, no explanation. I was pissed! 1) after all the xrays on my initial visit, consultation, that wasn't enough to determine next steps?, 2) When I booked the appointment, I wasn't told this ahead of time?, 3) Another set of X-rays and additional visit meant more money out of my pocket, 4) a clear disregard of my time, my family members time. So I sat down in the waiting room. My appointment was at 9. At this point it's 9:10. And I continued to sit. And as I continued to sit, I had a lot of time to think about everything and all it did was piss me off further. Then I looked at my watch...9:35. So I stood up and walked out. I took an uber to where my family was purchasing food I would need, like soups, tea, etc....since we both thought I was getting surgery. At this point it's 9:50 and I'm angry, explaining what happened. Finally at 9:55, the office starts calling me. Back to back to back to back. And each time I pressed ignore. Then my family said: "Maybe this is the universe protecting you. Do you really want to be sedated by a group of unprofessional, incompetent people?" And she was completely right. No, I do not! Also, Funny enough, my insurance did not cover 45.00 from my initial visit. And these people made sure to send me, via snail mail, at least 15 bills in the mail. In fact, in one week, I received 8! So y'all sure don't forget when you want your money! But you forget your common sense when it's time to tell patients there's been a change in plans, or if they are no longer receiving surgery and therefore, do not need a designated driver. Because that would be too much like right. Right? Done with this place and they won't ever see me again. Do yourself a favor and go where the staff are professional, competent, and have basic common sense.

However, I found the surgeon to be very dismissive - they didn't greet me, they interrupted me every time I tried to speak or pose a question and they in general seemed to be in a hurry. The surgeon also tried to upsell me on a post surgery procedure that I did not need (I would later learn). Overall, I felt very uncomfortable with their bedside manner. Last, the office forgot to give me my X-ray that I had taken during my visit only to mail it to me several weeks later without paying for the postage. I ended up having to do so when my mailman made the delivery to my home. It was not a pleasant experience. Overall, I'm glad that I trusted my gut and did not pursue getting my wisdom teeth removal here after my experience. I went to another nearby surgeon and had a great experience and paid much less as well. I would encourage others, if they can, to seek a second opinion and then make your decision from there. I am glad I did.

I fear the day I would have to get my wisdom teeth removed. That day came. *(scary music plays…read morehere)*. Gasp! It was the middle of Spring. The wind was steadily blowing as I walked through the thick glass doors of the cream building. Up the elevator and into the doctor's office I entered. Sweat dripped down my forehead and my stomach churned into a knot. When the nurses laid me down and asked me to count to ten... I knew there was no going back. *(scary music plays here)* Eeeek. Eeek. Nurse: Wake up! Me: eh???? Nurse: Your done. Wow that was fast! Other than feeling sleepy, I didn't feel any pain whatsoever. The nurses are super friendly and so is Dr. Franz . Best of all, I got some stickers at the end. Yay! I skipped all the way home after wards. Actually no. That was just the drugs talking. Tee-hee!

I have had 3 serious surgeries over a period of 7 years done by Dr. Franz. I can relate to most…read moreevery comment in the reviews, both good and bad. I will start by saying Dr. Franz is a master at what he does. My most recent surgery was, as described by my dentist, one of the most technically difficult maxillar surgeries there is. I was under for almost 2 hours (if that gives you some idea of how serious this was). I cannot give anything but the utmost praise for Dr. Franz' work. All of the surgeries I have had by him have been textbook perfect, and I incurred as little pain as could be imagined (2 of the 3 - NONE - including this most recent one). As with so many others who have written reviews, he was referred to me by my dentist, who prefers not to work with any other surgeon, period. Also as reviewed by others, the staff is unbelievable. They are helpful, pleasant, knowledgeable. One couldn't ask for more, from the front desk person to the assistants, the scheduler, the bookkeeper. Thank you, all of you, for being so terrific! The office may be dated, but as someone else said, I think it's just standard, and I have never found it to be dirty. A friend of mine who went to Dr. Franz told me she thought the place was dirty, so after she said that, I searched each room I've been in each time I've been there, and I cannot find anything about it that makes me think it is less than clean. As for the furniture, who cares!? Dr. Franz is in his mid-70s. At this time in his life, why would he spend money on furniture? Who cares if the place is "trendy" or not - certainly not my teeth or jaw! Were he to upgrade, the costs would only be passed on to the customers anyway. I don't go there for the furniture, and couldn't care less, as long as it's clean. If you want chic surroundings, go somewhere else. If you want the best oral surgeon, bar none, go to Dr. Franz. Now the bad stuff. As I mentioned at the top, I can relate to both the good and most of the bad comments. Dr. Franz can be condescending, rude, offensive, sarcastic. I have gotten responses similar to the woman who asked about drugs and nursing. E.g., the other day, I asked him about complications from the type of work he was going to do on my sinus. His response: "All surgery has risks." Well, duh! I'm not am imbecile - I know all surgeries have risks. I'd asked specifically about sinus surgeries, however, and that response was condescending and simply unnecessary. This is unfortunate, because Dr. Franz is also interesting, witty, pleasant. He is incredibly intelligent, competent, artistic. He has been all over the world, is a great photographer (in fact, mixed with all that dated furniture are great photos from all over the world - all of which he has taken!), and an all-around great guy. But he can be moody and one never knows what mood he's going to be in on any particular day. Fortunately, his moodiness has decreased tremendously over the past 2-3 years and I have not experienced any of it for that time. I continue to go to him because there is no question he is the absolute best at what he does, and considering the severity of my problems (my upper jaw, the maxilla, is disintegrating and I have had to have the whole thing reconstructed), I will put up with any potential moodiness because my jaw and its repairs need to last a lot longer than the time I spend at Dr. Franz' office. This is said after having been to many oral surgeons over a period of years - NOBODY's skills compare to Dr. Franz'. The women who work for him (with one exception) have all been there for years and understand his shortcomings, and are very supportive when you come out of the room looking like: WTF just hit me?! They know. So, it's a balance. Ultimately, his work is what counts, and as I started this review off with, he is a master at his craft, an artist. I wouldn't go to anyone else, personality moody or not. Leaving the personality "quirks" out, he would get 10 stars from me if I could give them. And even with the moodiness, I have to keep in mind what I go to him for, and what I go to him for, he deserves all credit due. Would it be nicer if I didn't have to wonder what mood he would be in on any particular day? Of course. However, he still gets 5 stars because he is a master at what he does. And with all of that said, I HIGHLY recommend him for any oral surgical procedures you may need.

And even when I say be careful, he was still super rough with me. Instead of cutting the back of the wire, he would cut my cheeks. Several years later, I went to get one wisdom tooth removed by him because he was the only orthodontist surgeon I worked with. Also, at the time, I was in college and couldn't afford to pay for all four removals myself. He not only effed up my bottom cheeks and gums more, there's still scarring till this day. So glad he didn't do the other three because my mouth would've been even more scratched and cut up. And instead of offering me anesthesia to knock me out, he kept me awake and banged away with a hammer and chisel to break up the tooth. There was so much pressure on my jaw I felt like it was going to pop off. This really sucked. I went to another oral surgeon for the other three wisdom teeth because I was not going to go through this experience again. I DO NOT recommend him at all for any procedures, not even sure how he is for cleanings but I doubt it would be any better.
