It's pretty unusual for…read moreme to fall in love with a Butchers, as I'm not the biggest meat-eater in the world, but this place is just great! They specialize in game and the window is full of yummy looking homemade pies. I've yet to try one, but I'm betting they're delicious. The owners are really friendly and are diligently there, open early, every time I pop in to pick up sausages for a Saturday morning brunch. The sausages are really worth the trek up the hills...they have a brilliant variety-I highly recommend the chipolatas. In fact, they have everything you need for a really delicious breakfast...organic meat, bakery bread, free-range eggs and locally pressed apple juice....mmm, Archers is one of the establishments I miss most from my days living in Hanover. Every time I pop up to Archer's, there's a little queue of locals picking up milk or eggs, whilst enjoying a friendly chat with the proprietors. It's really refreshing to see an independent ethically-minded business being supported by its community! If you're an avid carnivore and want to know where your meat is coming from, this is the place for you.

I feel it always takes time to get to know local owners but these guys have more banter than a bantersaurus rex so will chat with anyone. I second Sophie on the quality of the food and I can't put it any better than her so read her review. However, just to add that they have received a 5 star award from the Brighton & Hove City Council which you do not see very often.

They have award-winning sausages made on site, and also cure their own bacon, and make up their own beef burgers. There's a variety of stuffed or marinated meat, good for the bbq in the summer or for roasting in the winter. They make sausage rolls and pasties, and it's pretty hard to resist when you walk by and smell that baking! They were happy to give me bones for a dog for no charge. Anything you want, they'll get in for you. There's a small selection of produce and chutneys, and some meat bagged up for the freezer. Oh, and there's cheese and ham, too. I may just start sleeping on the floor. And if you go in and say what you're making, they'll give you the right cut of meat and the right size, and then tell you how long to cook it. I think one of these days, they'll just follow me home and cook it up for me. The downside? It's expensive. But you're paying for quality and expertise, which you just don't get at a supermarket. They're open seven days a week, too.

I went in last night and there was one person already being served - the butcher had tenderised a piece of beef to order and was in the process of cutting it into strips for her. But that didn't mean I had to wait, as he called his colleague out from the back who was happy to assist. I was very pleased with both the service and the quality of the steaks I purchased. I'm a semi-regular here, although I tend to shop here more in the summer when buying for barbecues etc as they have a good range. They also make their own sausages - the pinner porker is great, and they even make pies, pasties and scotch eggs.

Sitting directly opposite the road from M & B Meats, I'd recommend Principal Meats to anyone who…read morelikes a more traditional Butchers. Sitting somewhere between the Deli at a Sainsbury or Tesco and a more traditional food market, Principal offers decent quality meat at discounted prices, with friendly and approachable staff behind the till to help you with your order. A particularly good deal came in the form of three packs of 600g mince meat... They only cost a fiver. A bit on the fatty side undeniably, but better than Sainsbury's basics range and ideal for making burgers or curries, where the fat helps cook/flavour your meal. Alternatively you can always brown the mince, and poor the excess fat away... Enough random tips though! A good honest butcher awaits!

The shop is manned by a bunch of 'classic' butcher types who look like they have been in the meat trade for a long time. They have a good selection of cuts to buy at pretty cheap prices and make a lot of good sausages. I would have liked to see a bit more information about the origin of the meat, but the shop is clean and would certainly hold up to any FSA inspection. If you pop in near the end of business you can usually talk yourself into a cheeky discount. I have used better butchers in my time, but if I was in the area and needing something to knock up a meal I know I could do worse than shop at principal.

I may just have found a new favourite place to do my food shopping in Brighton!…read more Thorne's is a grocers, butchers, bakers, deli and wine merchant all under one roof, with the added bonus of a cafe and restaurant upstairs, as well as a room showcasing work from local artists - what more could one ask for in a one-stop shopping experience. All the food is locally sourced and all the staff seem keen to chat about the products they offer and where they are from. I had a great chat with the butcher (from Westdene Butchers - already highly rated on Yelp). He was happy to chat about the quality and cut of the meat, the unusual things he can get in with a little notice, and we even discussed Christmas turkeys (this seemed a little wrong on a boiling hot September day!) The cheese counter looked exceptional, the fresh breads tasty, and the fruit and veg looked fresh and wholesome. The only thing they are missing are a fishmonger - something we are surprisingly short of here by the sea. I didn't have change to peruse the cafe or the gallery, but having looked at the menu, I will definitely be back soon. This is my favourite kind of shopping experience and a great addition to the North Laines. Yay for fresh, wholesome, locally sourced food - more please!

Checked the website, breakfast til 11:30 and the essential "ring to book a table". So ring I did, only to be told, after checking with the manager, that they "don't do" reservations on Saturday's as a) previous bookers have failed to show and b) they're quite busy enough!! Shame - it's not so much about the £200+ they'd have got tomorrow, but the many hundreds they now won't get in the future, assuming they manage to stay in business for any length of time.
