Firstly, kudos to Family Practice Associates for seeing me at the last minute (the previous place I phoned in Boulder said there was a 2 day wait). That and the negligible time I spent in the waiting room was enough to make me overlook the annoying Christian music they were playing. Pamela Abrams was very no nonsense (one might say cheerless, not that I am exactly Ms. congeniality), yet she was thorough in terms of differential diagnoses and potential risk factors. She recommended skipping the strep diagnostic test since she said that it was highly likely that I had it based on the symptoms and that she would put me on antibiotics for my tonsillitis alone, but ultimately left the decision to me. I'm allergic to penicillin, the standard treatment, so she reviewed the other options, considering my previous experience with the drugs and the potential for allergies. Overall, the appointment was efficient but comprehensive, and I would take that over a perky but lacking MD any day.

Dr Amy Hanson was wonderful. However, my experience with one particular member of the staff has…read morebeen AWFUL. I don't understand how someone who works in Healthcare can be so utterly rude, condescending, and disrespectful to someone needing medical care!! Every time I talk to Aaliyah, she is snappy and short with no regard for anyone but herself. I understand that she is trying to do her job... However, she could do it with a little bit more kindness and poise. In one of our conversations, I used a curse word while explaining what terrible pain my foot was in, and she interrupted me to yell at me, saying, "That language would not be tolerated. And if I was going to continue to use it, I could find somewhere else to go." She had to leave me 2 messages in the last week, and when I was able to return the call, she made sure that I was aware that she left me 2 messages acting like I was a huge inconvenience for her. To Dr. Hansen, and Dr George, I appreciate your kindness and you both have been great. I would ask you to take into consideration, the attitude and affect of the people that work for you.

If there were six stars, I would give them all to Dr. Charles without hesitation. My first…read moreappointment was the best appointment I've ever had at a Dr.'s office; Dr. Charles has a way of making you feel like her old friend and I felt completely at ease. I had a long list of health questions and possible ailments and she patiently listened to me and took the time to thoughtfully discuss everything I brought up. At one point she even pulled out a physician's encyclopedia-type book and showed me illustrations about a skin condition I've been struggling with. I left feeling empowered and had a newfound respect for medical professionals. After a trip to Belize, I went to urgent care twice and was ultimately hospitalized for a little bug bite on my back. I had half a dozen doctors look at the bite, and every one of them had a different prognosis. When I finally went to Dr. Charles to follow up after the hospital visit, she took one look at my bug bite and immediately knew what the culprit was. I was furious at the other docs that didn't listen when I told them I'd gone to Belize and had numerous mosquito bites. One of them even suggested it was an ingrown hair (highly unlikely and borderline insulting). I was so impressed that Dr. Charles immediately knew I had a botfly and a week later I was healthy, bug-free, and once again awestruck by her knowledge. Last but not least, Dr. Charles always remembers me as if we're good friends, recalling details of my personal life and asking me how I've been since we last met. It's always unnerving to go to the doctor's office... unless Dr. Charles is your doctor.

From the moment you walk in, you're met with cold attitudes, dismissive behavior, and a complete lack of basic customer service skills. Simple questions feel like an inconvenience. Requests are handled with irritation instead of professionalism. There is no warmth, no respect, and no sense that patients' time or concerns matter at all. Healthcare is already stressful. Patients should not have to brace themselves just to interact with the front desk. Unfortunately, the front office staff here creates frustration before you ever see a provider and that experience never improves. If Arbor Family Medical wants to be taken seriously as a patient-centered practice, they need to address the attitude and conduct of their front office staff immediately. As it stands, the lack of courtesy and professionalism is unacceptable and has been a persistent issue over multiple visits.

I've had a totally different experience here--I'm absolutely gobsmacked by the other reviews! I…read moreswitched from another practice because I felt like a number there--my g.p. had the bedside manner of aluminum siding. She kept entering data in her little computer, and never once made eye contact with me. I'm over 55, and we "senior citizens" need to be coddled a bit, I guess--we expect to have our physician's undivided attention. That's just the way it is. Dr. Leistikow knows how to balance western medicine with a holistic approach. He isn't just a pill-pusher like so many other doctors; however, if meds are needed, he will prescribe them. Another bonus: he does hypnotherapy. This was a tremendous help to me--I can't even begin to tell you exactly how much it helped me. Without going into detail, suffice it to say I am a much happier person than I was at this time last year, and one-hundred percent more healthy--both physically and mentally. I have found Dr. Leistikow's staff to be very friendly, especially his nurse/assistant Martha. I have never, ever had to wait very long either in the waiting room or in the exam room. I usually have afternoon appointments. I've also had no trouble getting a "real person" on the phone in a timely fashion. If I have lab work done, someone follows up with a telephone call (usually Martha) to let me know the results. I've actually been to a practice where this wasn't done and it could have spelled trouble for me during one of my pregnancies. Being an old building the air conditioning does have issues, which is one of the reasons I only gave the practice three stars. Something must be done about that. The waiting room has been clean when I've been there. Yes, the decor is kind of tired. Believe me, I've been around: I've been in doctors offices from California to Maryland to here. I've experienced the good, the bad and the ugly, both for myself and my sons. In conclusion, it is true that this facility isn't fancy. But, all things being equal, what is more important: a competent caring doctor who treats patients with honesty and respect and works WITH them to solve health issues, or a brand-new, fancy-schmancy office?

My greatest experience was with M.A. Jennifer A. who spent her Saturday off in the office clearing up a prior authorization issue so that I could get my much needed medication. Even the most basic visits--such as routine annual wellness/annual physical exams--are repeatedly billed incorrectly, with improper codes submitted to insurance. This has happened to me two years in a row. Each time, the result has been hundreds of dollars out of pocket and significant time wasted correcting errors that should never have occurred. I raised these issues multiple times directly with my physician and with Audrey, the practice manager. There has been zero response and no attempt to resolve the problem. If this is how the practice handles routine preventive care, I cannot imagine how poorly it would perform if a patient were genuinely ill or required ongoing medical attention. Frankly, socialized medicine in a third world country would be preferable to the dysfunction I've experienced here. I do not recommend Coal Creek Family Medicine.
