I had not been to RHPS live cast in decades. First time going dressed up. The cast was really enthusiastic and many complemented me on my choice of outfit. Loved the energy before the show and of the main cast in front of the screen. Agree with others here that the "inserted comments" could be timed better and often sounded like two people arguing. If you have never been to RHPS with shadow cast, it's the only version in San Diego and is worth seeing. You'll be in awe how a 50-year-old movie, that is so bad, has such staying power. read more

This is a NON-review. I've been looking forward to taking my kids to RHPS for some time, and to have them enjoy the same place I saw it years before - La Paloma. As we walked up to purchase tix, a bohemian looking dude said "sorry, only the cast is allowed in right now." I looked at him confused, and noticed a lot of poorly dressed dudes hanging around, the rest of the cast, I imagined. I asked why the movie needed an additional cast, after all, neither Tim Curry nor Susan Sarandon need any help, they set the bar very high. He went on to describe that the cast performs in front of the movie. The theme this particular evening was "Star Wars." Yeah, I don't get it either. I dug a bit deeper. "Will we be able to see the movie screen?" As he paused to consider the answer, another dude said firmly "no." "Well, can we hear the music?" The first guy said at this point, "if you want to see the movie, you're better off going home and renting it." Really? I went back to my car with the kids - they really were into the idea of the movie, but not so much another cast, especially THIS cast, and I punched up the Yelp reviews and concluded, you know what, the dude is right. I should watch the movie at home. So, home we went, where I recalled that I had the movie on DVD and we watched it that night. It cost me nothing, although its unfortunate a band of non-professional (or it seems, based on the reviews) UN-professional "actors" ruined the experience I had in mind for my kids. What a great late night show to see. The Rocky Horror was created to be an expression of pure indulgence, absence of virtue and experimenting with what feels good and f everything else, Here you have born out of the imagination of large highly organized bunch of volunteers, a great location and a great crowd doing what it takes to bring the Rocky Horror out in everyone. Dont be afraid, its a great experience the cast/volunteers are friendly, energetic and talented. Be sure to let them know in the queue that you have not seen the RHPS before, they will take care of you like gold. read more

The atmosphere is rowdy and fun, but besides that, there's not much going for this particular production. I went to see the RHP last Friday, and was fairly disappointed. You can't hear the movie at all over all the shouting from the cast members offstage. I estimate that I maybe heard 15-20% of the dialogue, if I'm being generous (after watching the show, I ended up just reading a Wiki summary to understand what I had just seen). Now, this would be fine in the name of good entertainment, but the incessant quips and "jokes" were just awful. They were off-color (they must've yelled "slut," "asshole," "dick" at the screen at least about 30-40 times each), which is fine, considering the movie's raunchy nature. However, they just plain weren't funny at all. I laughed maybe four times total, out of definitely way more than one hundred remarks they made - and I'm pretty easily amused. I felt like I was sitting in a fraternity: all the crudity, none of the humor. BORING. The cast is not particularly talented, a fact they try to compensate for with excessive nudity. However, they did seem to be having a great time (far more so than the majority of the audience), and were very enthusiastic/loud. All in all, the atmosphere is fun and it attracts a certain kind of person to see it over and over again. About 60% of the audience were regulars who profess to have seen it upwards of ten times and absolutely love it. I'd say out of the ten or so "virgins," most walked out either shaking their heads or looking slightly astounded. I could see this being a fun thing to do if you were slightly drunk with friends. However, if you're expecting a just a casual, fun, and mostly sane Friday night show, be well aware of what you're getting in to. Update: I went to another showing of RHPS a while back, and almost every role was played by a different actor than the previous showing. The actors seemed much more suited to their roles and well rehearsed, and the crew offstage were a different set as well, all of who way more synchronized in their chants than the crew from the prior showing I had attended. All in all, a pretty decent performance. Kia makes a fantastic Frank N Furter, and the prior performance I saw where she played Rocky squandered her talent and dramatic flair! I'd recommend Crazed Imaginations' RHPS production, but the quality does vary tremendously depending on the cast used. read more

I've now been to this cast's showing of RHPS about 6 times (maybe more, they tend to blur). This was not my first Rocky cast, nor will it be my last. There seems to be a senseless war going on here for something that is supposed to be fun. So let's start at the beginning, shall we? It's $9 to get in, and $3 (I think) for the kit. You get the basics (lighter, newspaper, squirt gun, etc.). You line up a bit early (if you'd like, not necessary), and some of the cast is out interacting with the soon to be audience. The virgins are dealt with promptly, and it's a great time to size up what kind of night it's going to be. Who's dressed, who's not, what the crowd interaction will be like, who's already hammered, who's working on it, and so on. The theater itself is a great location. Right off of the 101, next to D Street. You can park around back (or on any of the side streets in the area). It's a great location for Rocky, and the inside is perfect. It really is one of the greatest theaters to see a RHPS production in. Almost worth it just for that. Go in, sit up close. The theater won't even be half full, so you're going to get a good seat. Closer is better. The show does take a long time to get started. (I usually plan on almost 2.5 hours there.) There are a lot of cast members there, and I know how the virgins that I take there feel. It's overwhelming, unwelcoming, and you don't really get the point when you're completely surrounded and can't even tell what's going on in the movie. I always recommend someone actually see the movie first if you're going to this show. It helps with the buy in. I've known many people who have left because it just gets to be too much. Most of the cast is really good, and here, I'm referring specifically to those who are doing the acting, not just the countless hoards that surround the audience for call backs. They do well, keep up their timing, and they're great on props, costumes, etc. The call backs crowd can be too much at times. Virgins don't always hear the movie, or the call backs because they're all at their own pace, many individuals have follow up lines or commentary, and it all becomes muddled after a while. That being said, none of it stops me from coming back. It's still a good show and a good cast. They're quite friendly (all things considered), and it's a good price for a Friday night of entertainment. RHPS is a great experience, and you SHOULD see multiple casts in multiple venues. This is just one option, and they're solid, just a bit intimidating and overwhelming for the newest attendees. read more

This is about the 1/2 star Rocky Horror live cast that performed at the end of October 2009. They were the worst in all the decades I have been going to see RHPS midnight productions in CA! What makes for great productions, are the split second comebacks completely said in BETWEEN on screen dialogue. This allows viewers, especially virgins, to HEAR the movie dialogue/lyrics and make the connection to the clever comeback. What encourages people to KEEP coming back, is wanting to accumulate the knowledge of WHAT and WHEN everyone in the cast & audience (together in sync) is saying/doing during the movie, so THEY can feel they are in on what is happening the NEXT time they come. Unfortunately, this key point is lost on this cast. They continually shout out comebacks NOT together as a group, but like an unorganized mob of Raider fans at a Chargers game in Qualcomm. Some cast members were continually walking up and down the aisles shouting their own ad lib stuff that was not even remotely clever or funny. These cast members who continue their improvisational monologues effectively DROWN OUT ALL MOVIE DIALOGUE. Thus, many long time RHPS fans & virgins are not really participating and laughing along with the comebacks, but feeling like they paid money to watch cast members enjoy themselves. I have posted on several sites letting locals know that if they want to enjoy a TRUE audience PARTICIPATORY midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show, ESPECIALLY if they are a virgin - - find another theatre!!! The Encinitas cast will make virgins wonder why people over the past 35 years have been spending money to see this more than once! If you have ANY respect for RHPS, for gosh sakes, PLEASE go see a different cast production and see how funny and engaging a GOOD cast can be! I'm not a cast member, just a happy regular but I wouldn't be anywhere else now on a Friday night. I think it might be an addiction. First thing, this is a party more than a show. Amy hits it on the head that it's not really about the movie or the acting or the story. (In fact when I bring virgins, I suggest they watch the movie at home first so they know what's going on and aren't annoying themselves by trying to work out the plot all the way through.) What I love about the show is that it is about acceptance. The cast and audience are a diverse mix and you can show up wearing anything (within the law... no duct tape, what?) and feel good, no matter who you are, your gender, size, age, colour or looks. I find that very refreshing in what can sometimes be a rather shallow city! I also love the creativity in the cast. C'mon, casting a TSA agent as Trixie is sheer genius. And there are some brilliant gimmicks that you only get here and that get a big clap every week. Yes, it can get a bit shouty, but it keeps the atmosphere going and keeps things upbeat - and there are some really good lines in there. I suppose it's a balance of quantity and quality? Anyway, if you struggled, try it again. The cast rotates the parts around every week and it's always new, and there's plenty of scope for interaction. And if you have never been, come. NO! The cast just shouts out "bitch" and "slut" repeatedly at Janet as if that alone were funny. It's like a bunch of basement dwelling sheltered nerds got together and started a cursing fan club. They also just get on stage and mimic the movie but it's not clever. If you like really immature, stupid humor, maybe you will like it?! It's like the drama school rejects of Encinitas got together and couldn't get accepted anywhere else. Very disjointed and disorganized. The cast all seemed to be drunk but not in a hilarious way- just shouting over each other and making it impossible to follow the movie or the skit they were putting on because multiple people are just shouting in all directions of the theater. I brought four virgins with me to the show the night before Halloween last year. Now they don't trust me. The cast was awful, disorganized, and annoying, with one guy stomping up and down the aisles, bellowing so loud we couldn't even hear most of the movie. They did not do the call/response in unison, at appropriate times, but rather seemed to just yell things out at random. Then in the middle of the movie they actually put up a spotlight and a PA system and did some pointless thank-you or birthday announcement or something. TOTALLY inappropriate, unprofessional, and uninteresting. My fond memories of the RHPS have been trampled all over. I sincerely hope those guys can get their act together and start doing the show some justice. read more

What you're paying for is the cast constantly yelling embarrassingly stupid come-backs at the screen, or the dialogue itself, over the movie. And I mean constant. There was no one moment of respite - and really, a guy DID stomp up and down the aisle bellowing. A cacophony. Go to another Rocky Horror show. My girlfriend is a big fan of rocky horror picture show and went to see the play and it sucked.. we couldnt understand anything, everyone was screaming different things at different times. The acting was horrible seems like they never rehearsed, they were falling and looked like they were putting half the effort. We felt like they were disrespectful toward the film, making fun of the scenes and using cardboard dicks, something a middle school kid would think would be funny. Just an overall horrible experience, wouldnt recommend it to anyone. Had to get up and leave it was just a disgrace and waste of time, cant wait til the REAL PROFFESIONALS come to san diego in the balboa theater so we could go watch them and actually show the respect the film actually deserves. My girlfriend and I brought our 16 y/o kids to the show last night. We were excited to have our own children have the crazy, quirky RHPS experience we first had back in the '80's. Things have definitely changed since then, so don't go expecting that same experience! The cast is friendly and fun, and we especially enjoyed the male, bearded Janet and the female who played Dr F was really good. However, there are MANY cast members and the incessant loud callbacks from the aisles completely overshadow the movie. It tends to get overwhelming very quickly and unfortunately leaves little room for audience participation and the actual iconic movie itself. Still, the kids had fun and enjoyed the experience. An extra bonus is pre-show fun and late-night dinner in downtown Encinitas. read more

I have been to the Crazed Imaginations showings of RHPS twice, Once to be de-virginized and Another time to de-virginize my friends, and both times were incredibly fun. The cast is fun and friendly, and they aren't afraid to make fun of themselves and each other. They are very comfortable which made myself and my friends comfortable as well. The cast was well versed and every talented from my point of view. The callbacks got laughs out of me and my friends just about every time, and there is a certain amount of fun shock value. Every once in a while my husband and I come back through San Diego and we love popping by the show. It's amazing how something that has been going so long still manages to stay fresh. I think it really helps that the cast in Encinitas rotates all the parts every week. And boys can play girl roles and vice versa. How appropriate for Rocky Horror! I now am becoming a regular at the shows. I wouldn't have it any other way. The cast is entertaining, fun, and a total blast. They have fun doing this show. They do it for free, because they love the movie and love their audience. This show brings a diverse group of people together and allows them to take a step out of their normal day to day routine and just be themselves. My experiences have all been good. Yes, there are some cast members who play the parts better than others, but that's the amazing thing about the show, no one cares how good or bad people are in their roles. Chaos is what is fun about the show. I would suggest watching the movie before you come, or you might not get to listen to the movies as much as you would like. The cast do shout callbacks, but it helps people that don't know what they are get them down for future shows. The audience also yell callbacks and sometimes there are different sets of callbacks that people are doing (due to others knowing them from other shows, etc), that's the beauty of it! CHAOS! I don't think the cast would have it any other way either at least that is my interpretation of how things are. Come out to the show, meet the regulars, meet the cast. Most hang out in front of the theater and talk with the fans during line up and make them feel welcome and included in their show. The show is pure hilarity, chaos, and just a good time overall. I just saw RHPS for the first time (with a shadowcast, I had already seen the movie), and IT WAS AWESOME! Crazed Imaginations made me laugh so hard I cried. People who say not to bring newbies to this cast are wrong. I had the best time and it was my first time! I was extremely nervous about this night, and now I cannot wait to go back. This cast has a wonderful time doing what they do. You can tell by their smiles and laughter. They add jokes and props during the show that make things extra funny. They will take things too-far sometimes, but it is all part of the RHPS fun. This cast is not super specific about their screen accuracy when it comes to physical appearance, they are happy to have a male play Columbia. I LOVE IT! This is what Rocky should be. Rocky should be freedom for the people who want to step out of their comfort zone. I couldn't be more happy with Crazed Imaginations. read more

I've got to give them an extra star for going out on a limb and trying something new with the Buffy musical. The Rocky Horror was pretty bad. The cast was fine and on-point, I also enjoyed gender-swapping Brad. That being said, they seem to have forgotten the meaning of 'audience participation.' They construe 'audience participation' as people inside the area of the audience participating. Forget for a minute that their lines are pretty stale and there's a point of diminishing returns on dick jokes, they have a horde of cast-affiliated individuals in the audience screaming out call-backs for every other line. It makes it intimidating for audience members who do not know these specific lines. It also makes it less fun for audience members because, if they did want to perform a call-back, it wouldn't be heard over this giant group of synchronized call-backs. While it's important to have these individuals to show the meaning of Rocky and set the atmosphere, they should know to back off and let the audience have fun participating instead of over-choreographing and drowning out the audience's opportunities to freely participate in their own way. Overall, the performance felt cliquey, which should be the opposite of what Rocky is supposed to do. read more

Sure, they are SUPER fucking loud but you're told that pretty much before you go inside how crude, loud and sexual it is going to be. since i have stated going, they have gotten VERY orgonized! Recently they have gotten even BETTER(everyone has an off night so if ONE TIME things when wrong that's not really their fault) Oh, i'm not a cast memeber but every virgin i have taken (seen the movie or not) was dying of laughter. The call backs are said so you can hear the movie ENOUGH,and if you can't hear it... tough shit listen better(: Also, if you don't want to partisipate it virgin "initiation" then DON'T!! They say if you don't want to sit down NOW. You don't fucking go to rocky at 12am to sit and watch the movie with a date and be nice and silent, you go to scream, dance, throw stuff and do everything you can't do (or say) in a "regular theater". Rocky isn't about being all pro. its about having fun and watching the shadow cast (which is super funny) In a nutshell, if you don't have a slightly sick or dark sense of humor or just don't love the movie don't go because you most likely wont like it. I think the people who had a bad time at the Crazed Imaginations show must have been there on a bad night, it does happen some times. I have been going to the La Paloma for RHPS for about 12 years now and there have only been a few times when it has not been super fun. SOme people do get carried away, but that is part of the fun! The cast is very different from some others; like the one I was in back in the '80s; but that is one of the best things about it. Some casts are strictly but the book, literally, there IS a book! All roles are played by someone who fits: correct gender, body type, etc. CI is not like that. Everyone is accepted there and anyone can play any part; Kevin for example; and very rarely does any clast member play just a single part every week. The atmosphere of positive body image is great too. There are beautiful people there of all shapes and sizes who are accepted as beautiful by the cast and the audience members. It is a wonderful thing to see a young woman who is far from the ideal of beauty feel admired and sexy in a corset. The confidence building is amazing. We do not go too often anymore, but when we have the chance we make the drive and have a great time! I would highly recommend taking a chance. read more
