This is a lovely little neighbourhood in Queens, with plenty of shops, ethnic gems, a couple of boba spots, and lots of trendy food places. It's kind of a cross between Flushing and Long Island, because despite an Asian flavour and being just down the road from Koreatown and of course Chinatown Queens, you're starting to see a little bit of the leafy spacious nature of Long Island - but only to the degree that it's less crowded. So it's a bit of a mixed bag but it's definitely really like the edge of New York City and I come here often. Do you come here often?

Summit of Manhattan Public Art…read more I'm always out in search of Public Art. This piece was relaxing. I guess it's the curves and flow of the design. The stones in the water fascinated me. It is quite easy to spot due to its size and was an awesome installation to see in person. It was designed to celebrate the area's (Garment District) fashion history. Overall not a ton to say about it though, if you are a fan of fashion then go and see it! Otherwise maybe find a route that passes by and admire it while snapping a photo then continue on your way.

Walking down 7th avenue in Manhattan's fashion district, you might be surprised to see a massive…read morebutton and needle leaning against the Fashion District Information Center. At one time this was known to be the Garment District, but the change the name after over 90% of the manufacturer of clothing left. While the sculpture was designed in the style of works by Claes Oldenburg, it was designed and built along with the information center by Pentagram Architectural Services. Just next to the information booth, a statue of a garment worker toils in the shadow of the huge needle and button. This weathered-looking bronze statue is a work by Judith Weller. It depicts her father, one of a great many Jewish immigrants who moved to New York and wound up working in the garment district. BTW: The stainless steel needle is 31-feet long with a 2-foot eye threaded threw a 14-foot button.

It and the rail were built at the same time so that freight trains could carry mail to and from the upper-floor loading docks of the building.  The Spur is at the intersections of 10th Avenue and 30th Street. It has the same vibe as the rest of the High Line. The views up and down 10th Avenue and 30th Street are jaw-dropping. I love to look up at the towering skyscrapers. It also has the largest gardens in the park, a 60-foot-tall cathedral ceilings in the Coach Passage entranceway, and space for public use. Viewing public artwork is synonymous with the Spur. It's hard to miss this area of the High Line. Make it a point to visit. Especially if you're going to be at the Mall! I can't wait to return myself. It's been a while.

The equestrian statue of General José de San Martín looks both impressive and elegant. I especially liked how the historical legacy of Latin America blends naturally with the modern atmosphere of New York City. The surrounding area is well maintained and perfect for a short stop or taking photographs. It is a lesser-known place, which makes it even more enjoyable to visit.

The Mother Cabrini Memorial is located just south of South Cove in Manhattan's Battery Park City…read more The bronze sculpture honors Saint Frances Xavier "Mother" Cabrini. The sculpture was originally unveiled in October 2020. The memorial stands facing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, symbolic of a hope for generations of immigrants. I ended up visiting the Mother Cabrini Memorial was I was exploring South Cove, near the Battery. The sculpture portrays Mother Cabrini in a paper boat alongside two children. All three figures gaze towards the Statue of Liberty! The sculpture is within an open plaza and has panels nearby that you can read regarding Cabrini's legacy including her impactful social work, her missionary order, and her contributions to the immigrant communities. She founded over 67 schools, orphanages, and hospitals. It was great to be able to visit the Mother Cabrini Memorial while visiting South Cove in New York City!

It is the culmination of multiple ethnic enclaves and a busy neighborhood that reigns supreme with character, color, and a cool factor that is unrivaled. It is one of my favorite places in all of the city and that's precisely why I've made it my 4300th review. My thoughts in snippets: :: What do you get when you combine Little India (Bangladesh / Pakistan), Little Nepal / Tibet, Little Colombia with sprinklings of Ecuadorian, Korean, Mexican, and Venezuelan folks? A wonderful neighborhood, that's what. :: Jackson Heights is also home to the largest LGBTQ community outside of Chelsea / Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan. The only other Pride parade outside of Manhattan happens here. :: Where there is diversity in people, there is diversity in food. A number of the most celebrated restaurants / food carts are found in Jackson Heights. One can come here and eat all day and there still would be amazing places left to explore. :: Food is an awesome draw, but the sketchy nightlife that ranges from lounges to dive bars is also a reason to come drink here. The activity here goes late into the wee hours, which makes it an interesting alternative to other neighborhoods in the city. :: It's not an express stop on the 7, but the 74th & Broadway station (#2) is easily one of the busiest stations on any subway line. There are several train lines that come here and a bus depot next to the subway, making this an ideal transportation hub. :: LGA bound? There are buses here that go straight to the airport. Minus Flushing and Astoria, there aren't many neighborhoods that offer public transit to the airport. :: Jackson Heights is adjacent to many other prominent neighborhoods that are some of the most interesting (and awesome) in the borough. They include Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, Woodside, Corona, and Astoria Heights. :: Roosevelt Avenue is one of the main arteries of the borough, but only in Jackson Heights does it truly come alive.
