Essex County Francis A Byrne Golf Course

Out of the three public courses that Essex County has to offer, Francis Byrne is the best out of…read morethe bunch. THE EXPERIENCE There is a fair amount of parking outside but in the summer during peak hours it can get very packed. The clubhouse itself is well maintained, clean, and renovated. Food and drinks with ample seating are available inside to prep for your round or relax afterwards. The staff in general is friendly and will help you if you need assistance. There are lockers and a shower located inside the bathroom that appear to be available for use if you inquire at the desk. One of the most common issues associated with Francis Byrne is the wait time. Since it's arguably the best maintained and most difficult public golf course in the county, most of the golfers flock here and therefore causes overcrowding. If you add in other factors such as beginner golfers and people walking instead of riding, you can potentially look at a five hour round on a busy day. Also, this course's green fee is six dollars more than the other two courses so it's something to keep in mind. In terms of maintenance and the difficulty of the course, I can understand the comparative upcharge but I'm not a fan of it. Francis Byrne is a hilly long course that measures at 6788 yards from the back tees. The course layout is difficult and challenges your shot shaping skills depending on where they move the tee locations to for the day. The ability to hit a draw shot will be especially important for holes #4 and #15. My favorite hole is #9 which is a downhill par 4 that overlooks the town and is actually used as a place for sledding in the winter if snow permits. The greens play very quick in the middle of the season and will put your putting distance control to the test. The rough near the greens are long and the hole layouts pretty much force you to have a flop shot in your short game arsenal to get you out of trouble. When you factor in the distance and the hilly nature of the golf course, choosing to walk instead of riding can be a challenge in itself. When I visited this past Wednesday for my first round of the season, I chose to walk because it was cart path only (which for me doesn't make it worthwhile). By the end of the round I was deadbeat tired partly because I'm not in the best of shape but also since I was sandwiched between two groups that used carts. My group managed to keep up with the pace but I can only imagine how difficult it would be for the seniors. While people who are more athletic and fit can do just fine by walking, I'd recommend taking a cart your first time to get a feel for the course and set your limits. OTHER USEFUL INFO -There is a small snack bar after hole #10 that is convenient and usually has friendly staff. -Be careful when you exit the golf course. The vision you have from the exit isn't great so you have to pull up your car slowly so you can see upcoming traffic before turning onto the street. -There is practice green that you can practice chipping at located across the small bridge and right behind the 9th green. FINAL THOUGHTS Overall, I enjoy Francis Byrne for the difficulty of the course and the convenience of location for me. The ranger tries his best to observe the pace of play but sometimes there is only so much you can do when the place is crowded. The price of the green fee can likely put off some people understandably but it's tolerable with all things considered. In the end, Francis Byrne will most likely be one of the better public course experiences you'll ever have because of the challenging yet beautiful course layout.
