My husband and I bought a 125 year old fixer-upper 2 years ago with a small and severely neglected backyard. The before pictures don't show truly how horrifying it was. The yard was uneven, completely overgrown with weeds, broken and mismatched pavers; there was a 4-foot drop-off 6-feet from the back fence with a collapsing retaining wall that only went partially across the property. The drainage on the house was not properly routed which caused water damage in the basement and must have damaged the yard because the previous owners put down a 7x10 foot turf rug in its place. Visually, the yard was an embarrassment. The backyard neighbors even planted pine trees to block their view of our yard before we bought it. More importantly, it was incredibly unsafe. I nearly twisted my ankle just walking out there when we were first looking at the house. I wouldn't even let our dogs go out there, let alone our children. When Jose came for our consultation, he completely understood our vision for the space and talked us through exactly how he would make that a reality. The team just finished the job yesterday and it is even better than we imagined! Our yard is now a beautifully manicured oasis. They did such an incredible job that it looks like it was always well cared for. Looking at the final product, you would never know how much work they put in; truly a flawless job! The team built a beautiful and sturdy retaining wall, backfilled the drop-off, leveled and graded the yard, reinforced the posts and put the fence back up, installed a proper drainage system that routes away from the house, removed several metal chain-link fence posts, laid sod and designed a gorgeous Cambridge paving stone patio. We could not be more thrilled with the job they did. We will eventually updated the front yard and redo the driveway and we greatly look forward to working with Backyard Bros again. Our property felt like a botanical garden, far exceeding the standard run-of-the-mill landscaping jobs you see in most neighborhoods. What I didn't realize at the time was how completely unprepared I was to maintain this level of landscaping. Even after renewing the previous owners' contract with Broehl's (the local gold standard for lawn care and maintenance) there was still too much to do. Unfortunately, I have a black thumb for this kind of thing, and there's only so many checks I can afford to write to try and keep things looking good. So for the past few years my wife and I have actually invested money in scaling *back* some of the landscaping; essentially ripping out and replacing some of the more complicated beds that have steadily been beat on over the last few brutal winters and didn't look good any more. When we met with Joe, we were clear that we wanted nice-looking beds, but nothing that would be over-the-top difficult to care for and maintain. And we wanted clear sight lines down our front yard so we could see our kids playing in the street. The overall amount of work we need to do to get our property where we really want it is pretty staggering, so Joe discussed a phased plan that would allow us to get started without breaking the bank. Long story short, he and his crew ripped out the mess of bushes and plants and undergrowth that marked the front and center portion of our lawn. He designed a simple, but elegant bed that he said would look great but wouldn't be impossible to maintain. He took photos of our property in advance, and then simulated his recommended design over the photos via computer, allowing us to "see" what it would look like before we'd have to commit. As you can see from the photos, Joe and his crew did a great job. My wife and I couldn't be happier with the work. We get a ton of compliments on the before and after. (Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the before, but trust me -- this was a huge leap forward.) Truth be told, you're really at a disadvantage if you cannot do at least some of your own landscaping. Professional landscaping is expensive -- plain and simple. And frankly, I hate paying for it. But as I said in my previous review, Joe is a no-nonsense, honest businessman. If, as the saying goes, a man is only as good as his word, Joe is a good man.
