The teachers are kind, patient, and knowledgeable. They seem to have an endless trove of creative activities, multiple options set up every day. They do a group snack time where the kids learn to serve themselves. They help with potty training. My son LOVES the sand pit, mud station, pretend room, and all his new friends. It was intimidating for me to join a new group of families, but everyone has been so friendly and helpful. I feel comfortable and supported as a Mom, and I love being able to spend time with ALL the kids here, a bonus I didn't anticipate enjoying so much. Parent participation is a huge and important part of the experience, and it worked out awesome for us. They also communicate proactively and helpfully with us parents - via daily paper reports, email, and in-person. Even the teachers from the other classes all know my kid's name, and give her a warm smile at dropoff/pickup. There are lots of activities, everything from field trips to "crazy socks day" "bike day" etc. - plus optional weekly "enrichment" classes from third parties, like music and sports. They also make an effort to build community with things like a teacher costume contest and pumpkin carving contest for Halloween. Day-to-day activities seem to be a good mix of unstructured play and "academic" content. The facility is nice as well, with a spacious outdoor area including playground equipment. My kid always wants to keep playing when I show up for pick-up :) (Her favorite is the sandbox!)

Wilson parent participation preschool is part of the adult education center it resides in and is…read morefunded by the santa clara school district (although you can enroll your child if you live out of district). It may seem funny that it is part of the adult education program, but the parents are as much a students here as the children. It is sort of a combination of a preschool and a parenting class rolled up into 1. Don't worry, it is not a judgemental "you must raise your children this way" thing or a sit down siminar on parenting, but I gaurantee you this, you will come out with a better formed understanding of what you think of parenting and in my case it certainly made me a better parent! The 2's and younger classes are 1 day a week and the parent is with the child that day. When you enter the 3's class it moves to 2 days a week and the parent participates one of those days. Lastly, in the 4's class it is 3 days and the parent still does 1 day a week in the class. They follow along with the school districts definition of an age (ie you do the class year based on the age you will be Nov 30th of that school year). The classes do fill up and spots are limited - especially for the 3's and 4's classes. It is easiest to join in the 2's at which point you get priority for a spot in the 3's. So what does an average day look like? There are 2 official teachers which lead the class and direct the parent participation. Parents are not expected to plan activities, rather they follow along with the instructions given to them by the teacher. In the 2's things are very laid back. But there is a structure to the class, an opening circle singing time and a closing circle. In betwen there are specific times for crafts and centers for kids to wander to and from, a snack time as well as a nice outside area for the kids to play. As with the other age level classes parents are expected to watch over a specific center or area and the preparation of parent and the separate child snack duties are rotated thorugh the parents. Every week a subset of the parents break for an hour to participate in a parenting breakout led by one of the teachers. The teacher presents the subject and then parents share ideas and opinions. In the 3's a little more sturcture is introduce. There is free play time, but there is also a period in which the kids work within their small groups on a specific project (art, science, etc.) The day is well structured and the parents get a job card which tells them exactly what they are supposed to do and when - for example, a parent might be leading a small group, prepping snack, prepping the play yard etc. Once again, parents do not plan activities, they follow the instrucitons laid out. Here too, there is a breakout session on parenting led by the teacher. The 3's class is a bit bigger and the play yard and play structure is a bit bigger then the 2's class. The 4's class adds a bit more structure and while you still have a job card and still lead activities planned by the teacher, each parent only works 1 of 3 days, so the child to parent ratio is 3 to 1 and this makes for a busier day :) One thing to note is that the small group activities increase in complexity and the parenting break outs start to shift from parenting to kindergarten readiness towards the end of the year. They will help you evaluate your childs kindergarten readiness and if need be, the idea of holding them back a year. The 4's class is huge and the play yard too is huge.
