The Arkansas River

What an amazing experience! I had never been rafting before and, admittedly, was very nervous. Mostly about falling in. I knew if I were to fall in, I would rise from the water in a flaming ball of molten lava prepared to dart thunderous lightning bolts from my eyes toward my raft mates. ...but that never happened. Maybe because it was late season. And we only got to see mostly IIIs and a few IVs. For a beginner, it was still a wild ride. Thank goodness we had, like, the best guide ever! Shout out to Yoda, who was hugely communicative, very insightful and has a strong eye for what people need, even without being told. What do know: -Check out Groupon before booking, because there may be a sale. We got more than half off the price. -Bring your own water -- you can take it in the raft with you. -Little people are welcome. I saw a couple of tiny ones -- 7 and 11, I believe -- out on our trip. -Wear waterproof clothing and shoes/or clothing that dries quickly. You'll thank me. -All of the equipment is supplied, that includes the helmet and the life vest, so don't worry about bringing any of that. -You will receive a tutorial and safety briefing. Pay close attention and don't be shy about asking questions. -Each raft comfortably seats six person, and the guide. I would not recommending going as a solo pair, but know there could be opportunities to raft with others. I say do it. -Bring sunblock. No joke there. -You can bring your own waterproof container for anything you need to keep try, and hook it onto the lead's bag. Just make sure it's small. I took a Ziplock for the essentials -- car keys, chap stick, meds. -If you want more water and more rapids, plan your visit for July-ish. That's peak season. By late August, the water levels are quite low, and you will get less of a surprising experience. But it is still quite the fun time without too, too many loud folks around. -Bring cash for the tip at the end. And have fun! It is a daring experience.

A great small company that doesn't make you feel like a herd of cattle being sent down the river. While safety was their top priority, the staff was very fun and personable. They were very good at explaining safety procedures as well as the reasons behind each. Jason was full of historical and archeological insights as well as knowledge of the river and surroundings, making our experience very well rounded. He (as well as the rest of the staff) was wonderful with our 4 kids (ages 9, 12, 14 and 16) and provided fun things for them that we have not seen other companies do. Our youngest is small and did not do any rowing, however we were assuming this ahead of time and also feel that the guides were good at assessing the ability of each participant. Her experience was not diminished in any way, and she was excited to still be an active participant. We would love to raft with them again, as well as try some of their other guided adventures!!

AWESOME TRIP!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! So we found this place on Groupon after my sister said she wanted to go rafting while out here on vacay from Texas. We were originally hesitant to book at this outfitter because of some older, unfavorable reviews, commenting on poor customer service. However, we decided to go ahead with it and everyone was extremely satisfied with the trip. We were given two options when booking our reservation: 8:30am and 12:30pm. We chose the 8:30, and hit the road early heading down from Castle Rock. The iPhone's Maps app got us a little lost, but we stopped at the little corner store and got directions. ***POINTER: you will see the sign for Rock N Row right from the 50. You don't have to take any side streets to get there.*** We checked in at their very mellow HQ and they soon gathered everyone for life jacket and helmet fitting. During this time, the wife was extremely nervous, asking numerous questions about the safety of the trip. The entire staff was AWESOME about reassuring her and allaying her fears. They were patient, kind, and understanding. They never berated or belittled her one bit even though she was literally in tears with fear at one point. After a safety briefing, they bussed the group (about 30 total) up to the "put in" about 5 miles up river. The route we ran in Bighorn Sheep Canyon had 4 class IIs and 2 class IIIs. We were very, very blessed to have Chris as our guide. He is the head boseman, lead climbing instructor, and he also runs a lot of the office operation. He was one of the most friendly, fun, and knowledgeable people we have ever met. He did a great job getting his boat crew working together and getting to know everyone. We would HIGHLY recommend REQUESTING Chris for either rafting or climbing trips. I won't go into every detail about the trip, but needless to say, everyone had a great time--even the people who were scared before the trip. The only regret we had was not going for a full day trip and going on the Class III-IV. This place is more a boutique outfitter than a massive operation. However, this is a plus! You get more individual attention, you get to know your guides, and the river isn't clogged with boats from your pod. Bottom line: do a full day trip, request Chris, and consider doing a combination rafting/rock climbing trip. You'll love it!!

Four year old's smile at the end of a fun trip!

A few weeks ago my wife and I came to Rock-N-Row for a fishing trip and there was some confusion where they got double-booked. They were very apologetic and owned up to their mistake. We were able to get out on the water with them later that day and to make it up they gave us a family float trip which we used today. Antonio was our guide today and it was so much fun! We had our four kids with us and he was super patient and interactive with them. They had a blast on their first ever rafting trip! When we got home this evening my four year old said, "today was a great day! It was so much fun!" I agree with him. Thanks Antonio and RNR Team! We will see you next season!

My friend and I were in the area ready for a fun raft trip and we could have not picked a better place. Chris was our guide and he was amazing. He loves what he does and it shows. He was great at teaching us newbies the ropes. We felt very safe but also had a blast! We hope we are in the area again because if we are, we'll be back. Thanks for the great time!!

Our guide was not so patient with me at all. I won't give a name. I was ready to call it quits. I'm glad I gave it another chance! This year, we decided to vacation in Salida, CO and give fly fishing one more try. The staff at ARK ANGLERS were so helpful AND we gave it another chance at trying a guide again. Kim from Ark Anglers was AMAZING!!!!! If there is another word to be better than amazing, I would use it. She was incredibly patient and gave us both step by step instructions, but made them easy to follow. I now love fly fishing thanks to Kim, and my husband is so happy that Kim opened my eyes to see that it could be fun and that I was indeed teachable. We went the day after our lesson with Kim and both of us did so much better!! In short, the staff at Ark Anglers were incredibly helpful and Kim is the best guide ever! (We heard from locals that Ark Anglers has only great guides, so if Kim isn't available, I think you won't be disappointed). THANK YOU KIM AND THE STAFF AT ARK ANGLERS! YOU ALL ARE AMAZING AT YOUR JOBS!

I had the chance to spend a month in Salida this past August, and after driving up and down the…read moreArkansas and seeing anglers on the water I knew I had to try my hand at fly fishing. As someone who had never been fly fishing before I opted for a half day guided trip and stopped by the shop ahead of time to book, making my reservation about 5 days in advance. On the morning of my trip the team at Next Eddy got me set up with a fishing license, waders, and boots. My guide Sam did an awesome job explaining everything to me from the very start. My goal for the day was to learn as much as I could, so Sam broke down everything from the gear and rigging, to the bugs we were seeing on the water. I learned how to roll cast, and we hit several different runs at a spot in the canyon near town. Sam showed me how to find spots where fish might be, key principles like "foam is home," and I finally landed a brown trout near the end of our day! The whole experience was amazing and brought me a ton of joy to be out on the water in such a beautiful area. Before leaving town I ended up buying an Echo rod/reel setup from the shop and Sam helped me get set up with all the basics I'd need to go fishing on my own. My first time out I caught two small brown trouts, and I'll chalk it up to luck and the foundational skills I learned on my guided trip. This new sport has been opened up to me thanks to Sam and the team at The Next Eddy, and since that first guided trip I've been out fishing again 3 times including at some spots on the front range closer to home. I highly recommend this shop and their guiding services!

WOW what a time. My…read morefriend and I signed up with this company to take us on a 2 day extreme class IV/V Overnight rafting trip on the Arkansas river. We both have experience with this company from rafting the Upper Salt River in AZ. Unfortunately the water levels didn't cooperate but, the rafting company modified the itinerary to give us the best possible adventure possible. Day upper upper Browns Canyon which led to class I've and the use of duckies. Operation am not a fan but, half of our group loved them. We were then driven 1.5 hours away for our dinner and tent camping (3 miles from our put in). Ryan and Eric our guides cooked a great meal and catered to the group. We awakened to a mist and heavy fog, which we were served pancakes and sausages for a warm breakfast, and let's not forget hot coffee. We then departed at 8:30 for our trip down the Royal Gorge were we hit class in rapids, lots of class 3s, great geology, good company, lots of fun and a great experience. Ryan our lead guide and Eric did a great job for 2 days of providing us a great experience and memories. You have many choices but from a personal experience this is the best company to deal with. We are already planning next year's multi day trip.

No integrity and no remorse for ruining our trip. Fast forward, we found an amazing company that agreed to work us in the same day and, after speaking to several people in the area, it is well known that Wilderness Aware Rafting has less experienced guides and get stuck in the river holding up "traffic" most days. Literally no one locally has anything nice to say. In hindsight, I am glad we didn't go with them.

The side-by-side was very well maintained and worked perfectly throughout our trip. I had no trouble driving it or riding on the roads and trails, and we were able to just relax and enjoy the experience without worrying about the equipment. The trails themselves were so much fun, with absolutely beautiful mountain views and vistas along the way.
