Going there for the first time I had the Front Bar steak sandwich which I thought could be just an average sandwich. It wasn't. Its this huge sandwich which is almost impossible to eat at once. Both times I was really impressed with the quality of their burgers. I'd call it comfort food they serve here. My marinara pizza reminded me of the good ones I used to eat in the old days out in the 'burbs. Nothing fancy about it but plenty of good tomato sauce and ample seafood and expertly cooked. A seriously good old style pizza. Not gourmet, not wood fired, just old style with crusts you loved to finish. I really liked it. The other dishes at the table were good too and there were lots of nods all round. They also make a great coffee here. Mine was a beauty. A final compliment for the servers here tonight especially the older lady who mainly attended to us. The service was fantastic. Brisk, efficient, friendly and at times, witty. It helped make for a very nice night. As I wandered off to go home I began to reflect on how little I really knew. The chances of me coming to a place like this without a special occasion and being wedged into going we're probably zero. It would have been my loss.

I had a vegan empanada today which was made up of tomatoes, pumpkin, corn and olives. Just delightful. They also have a whole range of gluten free options as well. Best thing is it's all baked locally in Northcote. Definitely worth a stop if you're ever up that way.

When my husband said "Merci" to our server, she quickly asked, "Vous parlez le francais?" We were there for breakfast and luckily there was one almond croissant left when I placed my order. If they were all sold out, I would have been heart broken. Almond croissants are my favorite and I tend to like to judge a place by its almond croissants (and macarons). The croissant was not the flaky and airy type but instead was a little more dense with a generous amount of almond paste filling. There might even be a hint of almond liqueur in it. Although I'm used to airy croissants, I must say that I really like French Fantasies' interpretation of almond croissant.
