My wife and I (a retired physician) were on a trip from Boulder, Colorado, passing through Santa Fe, Flagstaff, and ending up in the Grand Canyon. I suddenly had a bunch of "black lines" in my left eye. I was very concerned and called Dr. Mahanti's office. The receptionist who made our appointment was so considerate and understanding of our anxiety. They squeezed me in as we were passing through Flagstaff for an emergency visit. We were so grateful to be seen and the doctor and his staff was so thorough that I had tremendous confidence in what he told me. He basically described a condition that gave me these "floaters" but that I did not have a retina tear, and that I could continue safely on my trip. I recently had a pterygium ( a benign growth on the eyeball) removed by Dr. Mahanti. The recovery period for this operation can be more than a month. About 2 weeks after the operation I was experiencing pain on a Saturday and he actually delivered eye drops personally. His facility, staff and attention to detail is fantastic. Both my wife and I had cataract surgery by Dr. Mahanti this spring. Not only is he a pro at what he does, but he is a caring practitioner who takes the time to thoroughly explain all aspects of the surgery and seek solutions tailored to each patient. What's more, his office in our experience is extremely well run, with caring, professional treatment by all who work there. And when my wife experienced minor post-surgery eye inflammation, the office got her in immediately that day for a rule-out-trouble checkup. My wife came out of the surgery with perfect 20-20 vision in both eyes. I came out with perfect vision in one eye and very slight remaining astigmatism (predicted by the doctor ahead of time) in the other. Of course the cataract symptoms are gone, and neither of us needs to wear glasses anymore. Considering that both of us had worn glasses since childhood, this was life-changing. I've been seeing Dr. Mahanti since 2001 when I needed routine check ups for a family history of melanoma, and to maintain my vision with eye glasses and contact lenses. However, as an avid mountain and road cyclist, and a photographer, the use of eye glasses were not ideal, and my contacts were constantly getting scratched and lost. So, in 2005, after much research, I decided to get Lasik surgery with Dr. Mahanti. He and his staff were compassionate and very knowledgeable leading up to, during, and after the procedure. I was so pleased with my results, that I eventually talked my husband into getting the PRK procedure (he was not a candidate for Lasik). There are no words that could ever express my gratitude for the professional care that I have received, and of course, my corrected vision through Lasik. Dr Mahanti's skill and the way he runs his office is top notch. From the moment you enter the office you encounter friendly competence and professionalism. By the time you see Dr Mahanti the preparatory testing has all been efficiently performed so that Dr Mahanti can proceed with his analysis and other testing requiring his skill. All of this is done in a timely and competent manner. I recently had an eye issue which Dr, Mahanti correctly diagnosed, but wanted a second opinion. He referred me to an excellent specialist in Phoenix who agreed with the diagnosis. This points to the excellence and competence of Dr Mahanti. It speaks to me of the desire to be correct in treatment of patients and where an additional verification is useful, Dr Mahanti is humble enough to get another specialist to help in diagnosis. This is the kind of Dr I want watching over my health....a skilled competent Dr. who validates his treatment of patients when there is some uncertainty in what he sees. I can't say enough wonderful things about Dr Mahanti ! My son was driving from Maryland to California and woke up this past Sunday with a painful,red blurry eye. He wears contacts and has developed eye infections in the past. He had lost his glasses on his trip and was wearing his contacts too long. He needed see a doctor ASAP but he had to drive from St. John,Az to Flagstaff,Az in order to find a facility to treat him. I googled opthomolighsts in Flagstaff and Dr Mahanti's website indicated he saw patients for emergencies. My husband called his office and then placed a call to his emergency line. Dr Mananti called us back and said it was snowing in Flagstaff but to have our son call his cell # and he would meet him at his office. Dr Mahanti came out in a snow storm to see our son and treat his eye infection ! Our son said he was a great doctor and we were all greatful for his willingness to see our son on a Sunday during a snow storm !! His eye was 100% better the next morning and our son was able to continue his drive to California. read more
