Went to this state park for a long hike with my family. This place has some lovely views of nature! We took the trail leading to Lucifer Falls, and got to see the water up close. The path to Lucifer Falls can take some time to traverse. Personally, I'd say the trail's difficulty is on a moderate level. There's quite some uphill terrain you need to go through to get to the falls, so be careful not to overexert yourself. The trail paths might also get a bit confusing sometimes. On our way back to the entrance, another party alongside us had some trouble figuring out where they were supposed to go. If possible, keep a map of the park so that you can keep track of which way you're headed. I can't say much about the camping sites, since I didn't stay at one, but on the way back, the trail we were on led us to a few of them. While it was nice to see that you could stay here, I feel like some of the cabins didn't have much seclusion/privacy. You can also swim in the area near the lower-end waterfalls, though when you are allowed to depends on the circumstances!
It's probably been always one of my favorite hikes in Ithaca. It gives like these Lord of the rings vibes with the deep canyons and the Stone Bridges and the cliffs. It's just kind of epic with the moss. It has like a micro climate to it where it gets a little bit temperate rainforest with ferns and moss and it's just beautiful. I think there's four routes total. It's basically the upper and lower gorge or the upper and lower rim trails. We have the dog we're feeling kind of tired so we did the upper trail which is like under a mile and it takes you straight to the Falls and some epic sites. I honestly haven't done the lower trail but it's on my bucket list. It's 3 miles. I've can't come here as a tourist previously and just wanted to go for the I guess the money shot as its called definitely recommend.
As a park, Robert H Treman is still five stars. The hike is beautiful and the swimming hole is a blast. A must-do if you're in the Finger Lakes. As far as the camping goes, it's great for easy guaranteed access to the swimming hole, but leaves a lot to be desired for such a popular destination. Three stars for camping is probably generous. Supposedly we had one of the older bathhouses when we camped at Letchworth last year, but I was happy with it. It was clean, and I liked that there was an enclosed space for your belongs just before the shower. Very much a treat for someone who previously only experienced rustic camping with outhouses only. The bathhouse and especially the restrooms nearest our campsite at Robert H Treman were nowhere near as nice as Letchworth, and very dirty. There was a mess in the ladies room by our campground, and all they did was put a wet floor warning. It was never cleaned the three days we were there, and I have no idea how long it was there before. Also, baby millipedes everywhere. I can only hope the cabins are better maintained than the restrooms. My husband wasn't happy about a noisy camper with awful bright blue lights that stayed on all night, and found people less considerate than Letchworth over all in terms of honoring quiet hours, but that's probably just luck of the draw. Regardless, you're better off staying somewhere else and coming in the morning or early evening to avoid the heaviest crowds in the afternoon. The parking lot for the swimming hole seemed a lot less busy in the evening.
This is an extremely beautiful place!! There are stone staircases and waterfalls. It's unbelievably gorgeous!!
A short walk from the parking lot leads you to the soothing sounds of Lucifer Falls, located in Robert Treman Park. We also noticed cabins nearby that might be available for rent. When the water level is high, a diving board is attached to the deeper pool, adding to the fun. The fish inside are quite large, making it a unique and fascinating spot to visit.
Beautiful! We were enjoying a day of chasing waterfalls and ended up here. The walk to Lower Falls was easy to do from the parking lot. They were still setting up for the swimming area, and it was neat to see how it was underway. We would have loved to actually go swimming, so we're going to have keep that in mind for next time! It's neat that they have this option - it seems like so many waterfalls have hidden dangers in the pools that it's nice that they can take advantage of the formation of this one. It offers a nice picnic area with tables in a wooded area too.
Beautiful park and great swimming. I have been multiple times over 20 years. Went to take my kids to Buttermilk, but drove an hour to find swimming closed (I swear the website said open). Truman park was PACKED in the parking lot for swimming. Life guards were attentive and respectful. The bathrooms were closed right by swimming- I'm hoping for cleaning, but made for some unhappy kids to walk way over to the 2 stall bathrooms. They survived and the bathrooms closer were open when we left.
I entered by the old mill and really enjoyed this park. We did the rim to gorge trail loop that's around a mile. It took us about an hour but we stopped a lot to take pictures. I thought the hike was enjoyable with some challenging steps. Lucifer Falls is absolutely beautiful. Compared to Watkins Glen this is much smaller but I enjoyed it more because it far less crowded and I could really enjoy it. There are even some slot waterfalls similar to Watkins Glen. If you go to Watkins Glen this is about 30 minutes away and a good add on to that trip. I visited in July and thought that even though it was hot there was enough shade that it was still enjoyable. Highly recommend!
Picturesque hike with amazing waterfalls. We took the Gorge Trail. Make sure to bring bug spray as you will pass by tons of insects. Although a heavily uphill hike, seeing Lucifer Falls was worth it. Another great New York State park in the Finger Lakes region.
A lovely park that has a gorge trail along the water and the rim trail on top of the cliffside. The lower areas are where most people go first. The upper area has another parking area that includes a parking fee machine. Carry in, carry out park at the moment. You can see the rainbow trout in the river and the waterfalls and the large pool close to the lower falls is a popular swimming area when open. There are three pavilions you can rent, too. There are 9 miles of trails and some areas still under repair, so if it is rainy or wet, it could be very slippery. We also saw a snake on the trail so be careful. I love the area to the upper falls where you have stone walkways and a bridge that remind me of walking through valleys and traveling like the Fellowship of the Ring. The shale and stone here is fragile, so be careful of falling rock and don't throw stones down as people may be in the lower area below you. $8 parking if you don't have the empire pass. About 0.5mi from the upper lot is a crossover to the stairways and overlooks if you don't want to hike all the way down 2+ miles back and forth. Best water is around the spring when the winter melt occurs.
This is hands down my favorite place to hike. I've been coming here for 20+ years to hit up the trails and check out the amazing waterfall views. I love it here! You can use the first entrance (main entrance) and go for a 3 mile hike to the falls. Or, you can go in the back entrance (second entrance off of the main road), and take a shorter walk to Lucifer Falls. I love coming back here year round to see the iced over falls and the sights at all times of the year. I'll definitely be back here again soon!
This is such a great park! Clean, not crowded, and plenty to do and see. We parked our airstream at Camp site# E004 with 30amp electric hookup which was great on the hot summer night being able to run the AC. Walking distance to the play grounds, hiking trails and swimming area this place had a verity of things to keep us busy. Add to that the close proximity to Ithaca's downtown area to eat and check out this was the perfect spot to get away.
An absolutely magical place to visit. There is nothing like jumping off the diving board into the chilling water streaming down from a waterfall. The history of the Civilian Conservation Corps building this site adds to the uniqueness of the park. The pool was low this year due to the lack of rain which made it easier for my 3 year old nephew to wage in. The trails are so beautiful and varied. An annual spot we visit on summer trips back home to Ithaca.

Out of the hikes I've done around Ithaca, Robert H. Treman State Park has been my favorite. The gorge trail and rim trail loop offers beautiful views of the Enfield Glen gorge and waterfalls, especially with the fall foliage. It's moderate difficulty. There is a swim area by the bottom parking area. Both times I've visited this park it was closed due to being off season in October. $10 per car. You can use the receipt to enter any NY state park on the same day. read more
Robert H. Treman State Park was the last of the state parks in the Finger Lakes we visited a week or so when we spent the Fourth of July in the area, and it was a great way to say goodbye to the region. The park encompasses both sides of Enfield Creek and has several options to enjoy. At one end of the park is the Upper Park Entrance. This entrance has the Old Mill and access to all three hiking trails and is closer to the Lucifer Falls. (If you want to see Lucifer Falls without a hike, park at the Upper Entrance and you're not too far from Lucifer Halls - an easy flat walk to it, really.) The other end of the park is the Lower Park Entrance. It has camping areas (well used over the Fourth of July weekend when we visited - we saw tons of families enjoying the holiday weekend here), access to the Gorge Trail and Rim Trail, the Lower Falls (a waterfall with a swimming hole at the base - the swimming pool even has a diving board!), and everything else you need for a day of swimming and exploring (bathrooms with showers, picnic pavilions, etc.). We parked at the Lower Park Entrance (the lot was almost empty around 9am on a Sunday morning - even though it was a holiday weekend) and started off on the Gorge Trail, which is a 2.12 mile hike along Enfield Creek. This was probably the hardest hike we did at any of the state parks we visited over this holiday weekend (Watkins Glen, Buttermilk Falls, and Taughannock Falls). It was steep. I also didn't think it had the best views for the first mile - you're not quite as close to the water or *in* the gorge as you are on some of the other Gorge Trails. But once we got down to the creek, the views were beautiful (a few small falls), and it wasn't as crowded as the other trails either. (FYI: it was buggy and humid and hot, so if the weather is hot, definitely start early.) I had read on AllTrails that the hike up to Lucifer Falls was tough, so I was a little worried. But actually I didn't find it the hardest part of the hike at all. And Lucifer Falls was absolutely the highlight of the hike and the park for us. It's a 115-foot waterfall and it sort of winds and meanders in this incredible way - different from the other falls we saw on our Finger Lakes hikes. If you're visiting the park, do not miss Lucifer Falls. We returned to the Lower Entrance on the Rim Trail, which wasn't as beautiful as the Gorge Trail, but ended up being a treat, too, for a surprising reason. The Rim Trail didn't take us back to where we had parked our car. It does take you near to the Lower Entrance, but on the South side of the Creek. So when you finish the trail, there's a sign telling you how to get back to the Lower Entrance Parking, and that way back happens to take you past the Lower Falls. So we got to see the Lower Falls - tons of people swimming and diving (with plenty of lifeguards, too). We now know to save some time for a swim at the base of the Lower Falls the next time we visit this park! There are a lot of great parks, hikes, and trails in the Finger Lakes, but I really enjoyed our visit to Robert H. Treman State Park. Lucifer Falls is special, and the park was a great way to get some exercise and get some amazing waterfall shots, too. read more

This was one of my least favorite places to camp because the campsites offer no privacy and have no space or trees separating you from your neighbors. If you prefer a more intimate and peaceful camping experience, this is not the place for you. There is a swimming area that has a lifeguard on duty snd many waterfalls to see. That being said, the gorge trails are fantastic and worth visiting for day hikes. The hike is not particularly challenging and is a couple miles long. The views of Lucifer falls at the end are awesome! read more

In my opinion, this is so much more beautiful than Ithaca Falls proper. The falls (lower falls and Lucifer falls) are much more impressive. The lower falls are easy to get to, and right off the lower parking lot. Lucifer Falls is off the upper parking lot, and if you want to reach them from the lower parking lot, it's a two mile hike. The hikes here are moderate at best. Lots of hills and steps, but I'd you're able, so worth it. Tons of wildlife, chipmunks, squirrels, deer, lizards, arachnids, snakes etc. Gorgeous scenery, and lots of smaller waterfalls along the way. Lot of stone steps, so one must be careful to not slip. I took the gorge trail from the bottom parking lot. I also took part of the rim trail, which was chock full of steep steps. If you have the stamina, I recommend this spot, particularly the gorge trail. read more
This is one of my favorite state parks that I've been to not only in NY, but also the entire U.S. It's always so beautiful there and the gorges are incredible. It's amazing what Mother Nature can do over thousands and thousands of years! I've been fortunate to have gone here a lot over the last few years, because my fiancé's grandparents lived just around the corner from the park. Her grandpa even taught swimming lessons there. Such an amazing park and a "can't miss" if you are around the Ithaca area! read more
I didn't really understand the whole "Ithaca is GORGES" schtick until I went to Treman State Park. Simply breathtaking. You don't even need to walk very far to see beautiful views, babbling brooks and little falls along the way. It's so picturesque and the air is so fresh; I'll never forget visiting it back when I lived in nyc and remarking on how fresh the air was. Don't be intimidated by the 4.5 hour hikes, I mean, that's also available if you're into that, but if you're more of a 10 minute walk kind of person you'll get views too! read more
Not going to lie but I thought I was going to die hiking Robert Treman Park at 6 months pregnant. It's a 4 mile hike back and forth if you take the gorge trail (which I recommend is the scenic route). The steps were so steep and it took us about 3.5-4 hours to hike because I needed to take a water break. But was it worth it.... ABSOLUTELY. The giant waterfall at the end was stunning. read more

A friend recommended me this as a good park to visit. Let me tell you this, I went into this unprepared. I recommend if you're going to come here, make sure you pack food and lots of water. The park is broken down by multiple trails. They have a main trail that is 3 miles to the bottom of the hill and 3 miles back on the other side of the hill. We could have did it right but made a wrong turn. We traveled the 3 miles to the parking lot, and another 3 miles back on the other side. This took us about 2 hours and some time. We were dehydrated when we returned. What I will say this place had an amazing views, maybe some of the best views that I've ever seen in person. It was incredible and worth it all. read more
Beautiful spot for a fall hike. There are some great viewpoints to see the foliage. If you want a short bit fairly strenuous hike (lots of stairs), park at the upper lot and take the gorge trail down and cross the bottom of the bridge below the falls, then take the rim trail back up to your car. For a longer hike I would park at the bottom to do the full loop. That way you end on a downhill. If stairs are not your thing, park at the bottom and walk to the small waterfall where the swimming hole is or park at the top and take the gorge trail to the top of the waterfall, then turn around before you hit all the stairs. I will definitely be back to this park! read more

Wow this park is beautiful. So many waterfalls and little streams that it made the air all around the trail cool and misty. I loved every minute of the hike. Its super high elevation (900 ft peak) and beautiful scenic stops make this hike one I would do a thousand times over. It also has a couple of places where you can swim (if a lifeguard is on duty) and where you can sip your feet in. read more

After spending 5 beautiful days here, I'd have to say this is one of my favorite state parks. Although it not my favorite camp-site layout, our site was exceptional and may be the only one I book moving forward. The water was a chilly 62 degrees but felt amazing after a 5 1/2 hour hike around the rim and Gorge trails. Everyone was great with the social distancing and the bathrooms were closed and sanitized twice a day. read more

Five out of five! When we arrived at this park, it was a bit later in the afternoon and pretty quiet. There is a restroom facility at the beginning of the trail, near the creek. As you follow the creek down the beautiful path, you instantly become one with nature. The further you go, it becomes like something straight out of a fairytale. Layers upon layers of stone surrounds you and the rushing water of the gorge is all you hear. Plants that have grown over and around the rocks soften the setting. As you walk further down there is a set of stairs before the waterfall. This is a beautiful place as well. Honestly, the path was more amazing than the waterfall itself. I recommend you trace your steps back rather than crossing the bridge and going up the many many steps on the other side of the falls. I highly recommend coming here and spending some time. You can swim at the bottom of the falls and I believe there is another parking lot down there. FYI there is really not much cell reception out here, if any. Be sure to take notes on which roads you originated on - like Hansel and Gretel. read more
I was able to visit this park with friend while I was visiting Ithaca, New York. What a beautiful place. Our walk was along the water with lots of steps and hills. Beautiful views. At the end of our walk, we actually saw a swimming area which looked like a lot of fun. We didn't have our bathing suits and it was kind of a cool day. Definitely a must go to if you're in that the Ithaca area. Note there is an entrance fee. read more
Another beautiful state park in Ithaca. $7 to get in. This state park is probably the biggest I've been to. They have tons of camping areas & cabins. The trails are miles long and very challenging at some points. We hiked up the gorge trail from the lower park entrance. We hiked 2 miles in and didn't even make it to Lucifer falls. We ended up turning around because my friend was tired & we were starving lol. At some spots you're hiking up a 80 degree angle. I suggest wearing sneakers or hiking boots with GOOD GRIP. We came on the day where the swimming hole was being open to the public so the park was pretty busy but if you walk along the trail there are plenty of gorges you can hike down to swim in with less people. I suggest starting at the upper park entrance because I think Lucifer falls is closer from that side. Beautiful park & waterfalls. Watch out for snakes! Will definitely be back! read more

Not as popular as Watkins Glen but just as beautiful. One trail goes along the gorge. The trail back is marked moderate but I would say at time strenuous with tons of hills and stairs. Beautiful park. No crowds read more

What is there not to love about this place. Being from flat Florida we don't have a whole lot of waterfalls so for us this park was amazing. The lower falls is pretty cool and this is where people can swim during certain times (it was closed to swimming when we were there during the week) . However I found the most spectacular views were not at the lower falls but rather on the trail that takes you from the upper falls to the lower falls (or vice versa). If you have never seen anything like this before like us, then there is a part just after starting the trail heading down where you turn a corner and it's like some serious land of the lost shit going on there! None of the pictures do it justice you just have to come see it. Do note it's a hike! Especially if you're an out of shape sack of rice and beans like me. It's only 2 miles but it's a 2 mile long stair case. If you want to do the whole thing I would say start at the lower falls and do the 2 miles up when you are rested, then go back down. If you do t want to do the whole thing I recommend starting the trail at the top and go down as far as your comfortable, knowing what you have to go back up. Then just drive to the lower falls to see that. Also it was free when we came on a Friday late September. read more

Robert H Treman is probably my favorite park in the NYS park system (so far) because it is just so unbelievably beautiful. I love every bit of this park from it's incredible waterfall Lucifer Falls, geological carving in the gorge, flowing water and swimming holes throughout, and the incredible variety of nature and animals found all throughout the park. This is I feel like a slightly less known about park (which I love) and definitely one for a true hiker. The gorge trail is just fantastic featuring lots of ups and downs and the rim trail is equally breathtaking with an amazing vista overlooking Lucifer Falls. Not to be missed is a view of the valley (especially in the fall) from the stone steps on the rim trial. it's absolutely beautiful here in almost every way. There is also a natural swimming area here in the lower waterfall and part of the park which is super fun to cool off in after a long summer hike. In the North end of the park you'll find the historical grain mill and some information about the settlements of the park land before it became a part of the NYS park system. How far is the hike going to the lower falls if you're coming from the back entrance?
It is very scenic. Beautiful waterfalls. There are a mix of uphill and downhills. I'd say it's easier than the reverse but still somewhat challenging depending on your level of fitness.
I am visiting for the first time mid-September. I noticed on the website that their swimming season ends Labor Day weekend. Is swimming prohibited after Labor Day? Or is it an "at your own risk" kind of thing?
There is no swimming allowed in the park after Labor Day, the Holiday weekend is the last time! There is No at your own risk swimming. There are other places in the area to swim that will be open.
