This review is for Dr. Gregg's periodontal laser treatment -- BOY, DOES IT WORK!!! Saved my teeth! Healed my gums and restored my bone loss! My story:
Like many people, I noticed my gums would bleed a little when I brushed, and I knew I had what they call "pockets" down under many of my teeth, especially my molars and wisdom teeth. My pockets had been probed and measured -- most of them were in the 9-12mm range. I even had a couple of 13s. Crazy deep.
The dentists would try to do a deep cleaning once in a while, but would just shake their heads and tell me once you get a pocket, even a moderate one, the bacteria settle in and just keep digging. You can slow them down a little, but because you can't really clean the pockets at home, it's impossible to halt their progress. They destroy gum tissue, and then eat away the bone at the base of your teeth, making the pocket even deeper. For years, I lived with the terrible knowledge that I would either need gum surgery (oh great) or lose some of my teeth one day ... or both. Dread. Not a great feeling.
One day, my wife found Dr. Gregg online, and I learned about his Millennium Dental program with the laser treatment (called LANAP). Exactly 4 years ago (Nov 2013) I drove up to Cerritos and had the procedure done. It took multiple visits, and wasn't comfortable, but believe me it was a walk in the park compared to doing it the old-fashioned way of oral surgery! Especially because oral surgery does virtually NOTHING to actually regenerate your lost tissue down below (which means there's still plenty of room down there for the bacteria to come back and take up where they left off).
Here's the condensed LANAP procedure, as I recall it:
-They numb you up with Novocain
-They shine the laser down past your gumline, along and under each problem tooth
-The narrow light spectrum of this particular laser targets the specific type of bacteria doing the damage (surprising science!), so it kills them all
-The laser also destroys any dead and decaying tissue, leaving healthy tissue untouched
-They clean out all the dead bacteria and dead tissue
-They make a few scratches down below in the tooth/bone (totally painless) to release stem cells into the area
-They use the laser to get the surface of the healthy tissue to bleed and clot, mixing in the stem cells
-You go home and follow their aftercare instructions EXACTLY, because you take your healing seriously and want a miracle to occur
-The clot stabilizes and becomes a tissue matrix, which over time transforms into new flesh and bone
-You're blown away because a MIRACLE has occurred!
Note: I did drive up to Cerritos (I don't live in that area) for the first year for follow-up visits/cleanings, because they know what to do and not to do after this procedure (I didn't want some random dentist or hygienist to go poking around under my gums and damaging the regeneration that was happening).
Now it's been exactly four years, and my teeth and gums are amazingly healthy. After the first year or two, my probe measurements were down to 5-6mm. But my gum healing and bone regeneration have continued to occur, and my new dentist just measured my whole mouth at 2-3mm! No pockets -- like when I was a teenager! I told him I used to have pockets of 12-13mm. His periodontal specialist was in that day and confirmed the new measurements. They were blown away.
When you have this done, Dr. Gregg may or may not do your procedure personally, but he is the actual inventor of the PerioLase technology, so you're in good hands in his office. I can't thank them enough for what they did for me.
By the way, DON'T BE FOOLED by imitation periodontal lasers. Lots of dentists and periodontists around the country own Dr. Gregg's PerioLase unit (they pay about $150,000 for it), because it's the ONLY laser which does all this and is recognized by the FDA to result in regeneration. BUT a WHOLE LOT more dentists and periodontists buy BUDGET laser units that use generic technology (they can't use Dr. Gregg's patents). They'll tell you it's the same, but it's not ... so don't be surprised if it's a temporary fix and you wish you had upgraded to the real deal. You get what you pay for.
I know I probably sound like an ad, but I'm not. I'm just a VERY HAPPY AND GRATEFUL PATIENT who asked a lot of questions and did a lot of research. Feel free to check out my many other Yelp reviews -- I've been leaving them for years. Thank you, Dr. Gregg! read more
