Lakewood Family Dental - The price they gave us. But said they needed more money

RIDICULOUS! I've been a patient at Lakewood for about 2 or 3…read moreyears now. I've only gotten cleanings and x-rays here, and mind you, I've loved tooth cleanings since I was a kid -- these people stab your gums more than is necessary and practically drown you with the water before suctioning. I'm pretty sure they train dental students here, so I can forgive that for the most part. I scheduled a wisdom tooth extraction procedure more than 3 weeks ago, and their oral surgeon is only in the office 2 days of the month (every other Wednesday, I believe). I had to change my insurance information, so that was already a bit of a rough endeavor but it got done. It was scheduled for 1:00 pm; they called me three days before my procedure to see if I would be able to come in at 9, 10, or 11 am because they were short-staffed. I ended up rescheduling for 11:00. It was understandable and mostly expected because: While in my time as a patient here, I had only been rescheduled or canceled on once or twice; I made recommendations to people to go there and all three of these people had bad scheduling experiences on separate occasions. One was called about an hour before his appointment to reschedule for a different day! Then, they met my expectations even more by calling 2.5 hours before my appointment to reschedule for noon because they "had a call-off". Call me delusional, but the woman who called seemingly tried to catch me off guard or convince me it was already for then when she started the call -- "I was calling to make sure you're still all set to come in at 12?" "No, they told me 11:00..." "Oh, (pause) I'm so sorry about that. Would you be able to come in at noon instead? We had a call-off." And I asked about earlier times (9, 10)... Nope! Then, a few minutes after the call ended, I got an alert that my appointment time had been changed to noon. (So it never said I was in at noon, huh?) Also, I asked about payment plans or being billed for services because even with insurance, they were estimating $608 to pull all 4 wisdom teeth, and she told me I would have to pay up front!

I'd give zero stars if yelp would let me. Just awful! What could have been done in two visits was…read moredrawn out to seven. When my insurance changed at beginning of the year, they tried to get me to pay out of pocket. I'm sure that they just dragged it out so long so they could milk medicaid for all those extra visits.

Afdent (Fort Wayne) was absolutely amazing from the moment I walked through the door. I came in…read morearound 10:30 a.m. the day after Christmas with serious tooth issues, and the front office staff immediately made me feel cared for--offering ice packs and oral numbing gel while they helped me get settled. Despite having a completely full schedule, they went above and beyond to make room for me and complete extensive work, including a tooth extraction, bone graft, and creating a replacement flipper so I didn't have to leave without a tooth. The lab team even stayed late to finish my flipper. I truly can't express how thankful and grateful I am for the time, effort, and genuine compassion the entire team showed me. Dr. Hubbard and Dr. Hester were fast, efficient, and did an excellent job. However, the person who truly made the biggest impact on my experience was the dental assistant, Cindy. She was phenomenal--handling X-rays, multiple impressions, and thoroughly explaining everything along the way. Her passion for her job truly showed, and she made me feel completely at ease throughout the process. The fact that the entire office stayed until 6 p.m. the day after Christmas just to make sure I was taken care of speaks volumes about their dedication. I highly recommend Afdent to anyone looking for outstanding dental care and a team that genuinely puts patients first. I will most definitely be going back. - Austin

The lady that cleaned my teeth was amazing that's why it gets a 2 star. They found some cavities and scheduled my the next day at 1 or so I thought. I have 2 different texts saying 1pm so I not only left work but missed a college class for this apt. Just for them to tell me it was at 12. Well why didn't my text say that? It could of been the new girl that did my appointment but in my head I showed up over half an hour early but she told me I was late then the came up with the amazing idea of hey maybe a 1pm will cancel and you can wait here to see if we can maybe see you. Psst already wasted an hour of my life. They asked me to reschedule but that's how you lose business by doing unprofessional work. I originally liked the place and was willing to give my business but after that and then asking me to wait for a maybe was crazy.

Narrated everything they were doing as they did it. The quality of care was exceptional. When it came time for Dr Meyer to give me the IV sedation, I felt ready and comforted. Single-handedly the best dental experience I've ever had. Recovery has been going really well, too. I was told what to expect and when. I called with an anxiety induced concern and they were able to bring me in within minutes to check the extraction site(s). Everything was fine but they never made me feel bad for calling. I feel important, cared about and valued there. I will recommend Dr Meyer and her team, the whole Ruckman office really, to anyone needing an oral surgeon. Don't even bother going anywhere else!

I got the appointment quickly. I thought it would be a long way out. I checked in with the friendly staff. I was taken back to the room where the dental assistant explained the procedure in detail to me. Asked a few questions about my health history that hadn't been on the questionnaire I had filled out online, took my blood pressure and told me the doctor would be in shortly. When Dr. Myer came in she introduced herself, was quite friendly and we joked about a few things, She explained a few more things. Then we got busy. Shots were in, a little waiting for the numbness and she and the assistants came in and within 15 minutes the teeth were out. It was amazing! I didn't feel anything, not pinching, not pressure, nothing. She is very skillful and very patient oriented. She talks to throughout letting you know what she is doing. I couldn't have asked for a better dentist or staff! The one thing that did surprise me was that even though I have excellent insurance that would pay for the entire procedure, I was asked to pay for half up front. It will take 2-3 weeks for them to reimburse me. Living on SS that is a hard pill to swallow especially since it came as a surprise as I was checking out.
