Front of cabin. Note lack of handrails and railing on the stairs
Frank D.

Booked 2 nights in a cabin about 3 times the size of the double bed it contained for significantly more than we could have stayed in a major hotel on the Valdez waterfront. We had to park up hill and walk down a gravel road about 100 feet to the cabin. The 4 high steps up to the cabin had no hand railing and there was no railing around the deck. We are in our 70s and we needed to use hiking sticks to negotiate the steps. While the room was equipped with a sink, a microwave and a fridge, it was tiny. The only dilapidated chairs were out on the front porch. The bathroom consisted of a toilet and a small shower. The water system was similar to an RV with a water and a waste tank. Whenever we used water, noisy pumps ran for a minute or so. Heat was from an electric cast iron stove but we did not need it. The cabin was supposed to have internet and there was a router in the room that provided a wi-fi signal but no internet connection. We called the manager the afternoon we arrived and it was never fixed in 2 days. We could use all our devices up the hill near another cabin so we know it was not our equipment. Power failed during our first night and was restored early in the morning. After having a sumptuous cabin that was 3-4 times bigger the previous night in Copper Center and included breakfast, this was a major disappointment for $65 a night more expensive. We considered leaving after the 1st night and forfeiting our rent.

This place is the perfectly rustic but luxurious at the same time. Great for a few nights gets away. Close to downtown Valdez but far enough away as well. Has running and hot water, flush toilets, a comfy bed and private. Also quite clean. Pricing was competitive with surrounding options. Bonus: they allow pets in a couple of their cabins with a deposit! Views are wonderful and the booking folks were kind and helpful. Would totally stay here again and highly recommend it.

Hot tub with a view

This place is beyond dreamy! The perfect getaway while visiting Valdez. The lodge was stocked with everything we needed, the cleaning staff came every day and freshened everything up. We had an incredible view, hot tub, there's a fire pit that we didn't get to use do to weather - really everything you could want. The bed rooms are quiet and the beds are comfy. For those wondering about the bathroom, each floor does share a bathroom. This is more of a B&B or air B&B feel as there is no staff at the lodge, but the owners were incredibly responsive and helpful when needed. This place is really a dream - there's no where better to stay while in Valdez! Thanks for a wonderful experience!

What a pleasant surprise. The star rating on Yelp is very misleading because it reflects Totem…read morebefore the fire in 2016. It has subsequently been entirely rebuilt and is a real gem in Valdez. Like all hotels in small towns in Alaska, it's not perfect. It's at the mercy of seasonal access or lack thereof to resources and adequate, properly trained staff. That being said, this is one of THE NICEST, MOST THOUGHTFUL modern hotels I've seen in Alaska. -plug ins for electric cars -rooms equipped for blind and deaf patrons -lights controlled by your keycard to save electric -very stylish, EXTREMELY comfortable rooms, with sanitary, comfy, water saving duvets -gorgeous, modern bathrooms with step-in showers which are much safer for patrons with physical empairments -a fairly large pool, which in Alaska is an ENORMOUS luxury -a 24 hour fitness room -a beautiful Alaskan themed breakfast room Only complaint was breakfast looked better than it tasted. I agree with Lardbelly... skip the sausage gravy and biscuits. The nice surprise was the apple Danish, which was clearly filled with homemade apple filling, not that gross canned shit. Absolutely wonderful! They also have coffee available 24 hours with 3 kinds of creamer. Alaskans are coffee FIENDS and this did not go unnoticed. Absolutely recommend, especially off-season- the price is significantly less.

Mountain Sky Hotel & Suites - Valdez, Alaska - Mountain High Hotel Suites

Yeah, it's alright…read more Best Western is probably "nicer" and similarly priced. If you have a lot of people (3-6), Mountain Sky offers a "Family Suite" that is a great option. We bunked 5 people for 3 nights for $505. $101 a person for 3 nights lodging ain't bad eh? The shower pressure was weak and water wasn't very hot. After a day of ice climbing in the cold, we really need these two things! If they could fix those, I'd gladly throw 'em another star. WiFi is free and while it's not fast (welcome to Alaska), it's not so slow as to make you want to commit acts of violence against yourself/others. We had breakfast at the attached (unnamed?) restaurant, it was pretty good. Definitely a good option if you need to get going quicker in the morning. I vastly prefer paying for hot food rather than getting a "free" continental breakfast of carbs and hard boiled eggs.

We arrived in Valdez yesterday and went to The Potato for lunch. We asked the local staff where to…read morestay and they recommended this hotel. We paid 159 for one night to sleep for a few hours before we head to Whitehorse. The sheets were clean. The bed was comfortable I slept straight 8 hours without waking. The shower pressure was ok. You can still get a good clean with hot water. This hotel does not have an elevator so if you have tons of luggage, it is something to think about. For its class in the middle of nowhere Alaska and the price, it's good value. The front desk guy had a really good sense of humor too. Check in was easy. The room had a coffeemaker with an assortment of coffee and condiments, a microwave, and a refrigerator. The TV works.

The breakfast is on second floor which is a big living room with big windows facing the mountains. All are prepped early morning for us, with all kinds of continental breakfast style. The house is lovely decent decorated with kitties and feathers. And after a day of kayak, it's a nice place to rest at with good views and nice sofas. Laura is a nice lady, catering all our needs and giving our suggestions for restaurant and guide for bear viewing. One thing though, the wifi signal at first floor was very poor, but it's ok.

Just ok. There isn't a lot to choose from in Valdez, other than the Best Western, a couple of…read moresmall B&Bs, and the Totem Inn (which has some pretty bad reviews). The bedrooms are in the basement of a house (you reach the bedrooms through the garage door). From the outside, the house looks ok (chalet style) but the rooms are strictly bare bones. The bedding and towels have seen better days, but I think both were clean. The bathroom seemed clean although, oddly enough, there's a refrigerator in it. One bad thing is that you don't get a room key, so you can't lock your bedroom during the day. The house isn't locked either (and the owner is gone at her day job during the day). The owner says no one really locks doors in Valdez, and while it might be a safe town overall, I felt uncomfortable about this. I mean, what if the people staying next door are sketchy? The breakfast was decent basics--juice, coffee, cereals, toast, fruits, etc. It's all self serve (I had to investigate upstairs to find out where breakfast was served), but ok stuff. Overall, it's an inexpensive place to stay, but with few amenities.
