It was a stunning fall day, the air was crisp and the parking lot was totally packed. What a gorgeous day to explore Robbers Cave. We brought a picnic and the fur babies and made a day of it! The only tiny complaint was the QR codes were scratched out so there was no way for people to pay for parking. A sign update is definitely needed but this was during the government shutdown so I'm sure that wasn't available. Bathrooms were clean and well stocked, trails were in excellent shape, trash cans were pretty full due to all the people but not overflowing. If you can make it on a week day it would be a lot easier to find parking. This is an Oklahoma must do! read more

I checked in for the annual fall festival that always falls during fall break in October. It's a fabulous festival with car show, tons of food options, and great vendors to shop. They have a carnival and inflatables for kids too. But this state park itself is one of my favorites. I've been going since I was a child, and the lake is so beautiful. I love to rent a paddleboat! They have yurts to rent, putt putt golf, and a snow cone/coffee stand that has become better and better over the years. The lookout kitchen is finally open after that whole debacle with the state, but I need to go back and try it. The building is beautiful though and right in the water. We've camped here in our RV too, and the spots are spacious, quiet, and very woodsy. It's always fun to hike up to the cave too. The history of this area is so cool. The trails are great, and there are options for ability levels. I always go green or yellow. You can often find people rappelling too! Definitely give this state park a try. read more

This was the first place Tony and I started our adventure with some hiking among the rocks and into some caves. Story goes that the likes of the Younger Gang, Jesse James Gang, Belle Starr & other notorious outlaws hid out here from posse and sheriff's. I stayed at a tent site on Lake Wayne Wallace. The lake area has plenty of trees and the scrub is a bit overgrown. The lake itself is relatively small but the water is warm in the summer I was able to get in there in early July and it felt like at least 85°. There are a couple of beach areas where you can easily enter the lake. The campsites a large with fire pits, poles, tables. I spent three nights here and had a great time. You do have to watch out for bugs - there are tiny gnats which will bite you so make sure you carry your deet. The people I met there were largely friendly and there are people that come to the common area to bring their families for swimming. The Esq site looks really nice, you can camp there with just your RV and don't have to bring a horse. Restrooms are clean and brand new all over this is the first place but I saw an air-conditioned restroom and hot showers. There are 2 yards which looked pretty large and nice and a covered wagon which is more for the romance then convenience which is offered by cabins which I heard our air conditioner and even have TV. I would like to try the other tent sites next time such as deep Ford. When you're in the area try to take a tour of robbers Cave itself. Normally I have my Walkingstick/trekking pole, But somehow I ended up with a coffee mug in my hand, and did the entire tour to the cave. The state park has free tours at 9 AM most days so take advantage of that to get an amazing breathtaking scenic tour. While the cave itself in the history was fascinating, The most scenic area was on top where you can get a breath taking view of the mountains in the trees. On the way down we crawled through some pretty tight spaces To come out into an area where it was rumored that Belle Star held a bunch of horses. Also saw a rock were it's rumored Jesse James called his initials. Overall the tour an hour and a half and was well worth it. There are almost steps carved into the rock so it's pretty easy hike although they might be quite a few strenuous ups and downs. read more

Had such a great experience here. The feeling of being at a real cabin camp with friends and family was the best way to end the summer. Will definitely visit again. They had hiking, lake swimming, pool swimming, fishing, kayaking, horse back riding (definitely make reservations, we missed out and forgot to). So much fun to enjoy here at Robber cave! Love the Park, beautiful with lots of hiking trails. Our cabin is large but dirty. Park rangers are unfriendly. Weather is moderate with high humidity, early October. It appears the State is making significant capital improvements to the Park. Should be more comfortable in the future. The cabin has TV. read more

Went there as a kid, took my kids there and visited later in my 60's & latter in my 70's! Well worth the visit.

FOR ALL METAL DETECTORISTS: We called the day before and asked if metal detecting was allowed in the park and was told yes with a free permit. Arrived today and was told it was not allowed, them told that it was allowed but only in the beach area. We were also told that the rule had changed just now today 12-30-2021. Hosts a Fall Festival with a carnival and the Lawn Chair Nationals car show the 2nd weekend in October. Swimming pool, lake swim area with paddle boats. Don't forget to feed the catfish there! Communication with the office could have been better and communication within the office too but we really enjoyed the park overall. Our lodge room had a great view, the golf cart rental was fun and the pool was too. Paddleboats wore me out. Do not miss the snocone stand! This place is a gem! The Robber's Cave area itself is so much fun to walk, hike, and scramble around--adults and kids alike! But then there are also some nature trails and campsites that extend the experience. The trail maps need some help though, so it'd be worth your time to find maps at www.travelok.com before you get to the park. Robbers Cave State Park is a wonderful gem for Oklahoma exploring. If you grew up in Oklahoma, you might have gone here for a school field trip as a kid. I did not grow up in Oklahoma, so this was a welcomed new discovery. It is the famed hiding spot of Jesse James while he was running from the law. Now, it is a great place for climbing rocks, exploring cliffs, and hiking in the woods. Plenty of exploring for a family to do. If you have small children, be warned that the rock faces are quick large with no railings or warning signs (which is part of the beauty of the natural surroundings), so keep little ones close. If you want a great change of scenery but still stay in Oklahoma, this is your spot! read more

We just camped here for the weekend and loved our stay! We stayed at the Old Circle RV area and my sister-in-law stayed at the lodge. The sites in the Old Circle feel much more secluded and large compared to the Whispering Pines circle right next door. They also have an equestrian RV area and an ATV RV area. They have several tent camping only areas as well. The park is separated down the middle by the local highway. The main area by the check-in has a nature center, which was not that exciting. It looks like they are making improvements and adding another very nice building, hopefully to include a more exciting nature center. There is also a pool, lake swim area, place to rent paddle boats/canoes, mini golf and frisbee golf. There is a large field and it just looks like a fun place to have a god time. There are several trails in the area. Make sure to pick up a park map and take it with you. Many of the trails intersect and you could take a wrong turn and hike longer, or shorter, than you anticipated. Definitely don't miss the Robber's cave trail, the one with the actual cave. It is such a fun trail! There are some steep drop offs so watch the kids. However, bring the kids because it is fun to hike through the small rock tunnels! This one of the better state parks in Oklahoma. read more

If you go here do NOT follow Google directions. If you do, you're likely to end up on a dirt road to hell. One that is most certainly capable of destroying your vehicle. We got stuck and in a bad way. I am glad the car was drivable after that. If you see a sign that says management of any sort, keep going. It's about 3mi down from where Google says it is. Checking in was simple. To be honest, this place has a lot of potential. Sadly, it also has a ton of bugs and people who aren't serious about upkeep but are constantly driving through the camp to check up on things. Makes no sense to me. Hornets and scorpions and huge spiders are everywhere in the bathrooms. I asked someone who works there if they spray and the guy said he was out of spray at the moment but he could try and swat them away. Really?! The Red Bud campsite is decent, there are others that are better but they don't have a bathroom close by at all. No shower. No toilets. Nada. And they still charge $12/tent. That's just crazy. You shouldn't be charged for primitive camping. The river is dammed off and basically it's stagnant. It stinks of dirty pond scum. It's hardly moving at the height of the day. Seems active with fish and insects. We planned to stay 2 nights but left mid day on our second day. Too hot, too dirty, too many bugs and no upkeep. If I ever come back to this place it will likely be in late fall early winter once some of the bugs are gone. Next time I may opt for the primitive spot since the bathrooms are crawling, literally and it's creepy to have one eye watching for something that could kill you and the other on the door with no lock, let alone worry if you scrubbed off all the scum from the river. At this point I really can't rate it higher than 2 stars. read more

My husband and I stayed here (in a cabin) for 2 nights. The park was absolutely breathtaking. There is not other explanation needed. I will be posting a lot of pics so check them out. The campsites and cabin sites were very clean, quiet and well- maintained. The staff was SO nice. The little store has all the things you forgot and they don't upcharge an arm! The cabin was really spacious for 2 people and I was impressed with that. The view from the back windows of our cabin was obstructed so that wasn't awesome but we walked behind vacant cabins and their views were AMAZING! (Specifically the views behind the lodge and behind cabins like 102-105). We were in 109. The price- you just can't compete with. It was so affordable for a while cabin WITH kitchen AND you can bring your dog! I was impressed with the housewares they provided. (Plates, cups, bowls, iron skillet, flat baking sheet, 2 size pots). The linens were very clean also! The ONLY negative is that the cabin itself is pretty old and worn. I wouldn't walk on the floor barefoot. It's kind of gross and the chairs and couch kind of grossed me out. You just have to keep in mind that it's being maintained by the State of OK- not La Quinta or Hilton. By the perspective, I was impressed! read more

This place is beautiful. There are a few different trail options ranging from skilled to beginner. This is a great place to take kids. I have stayed in a lodge room which has Direct tv, microwave, mini fridge, and coffee pot (which is really all I needed). The beds and the pillows were hard as a rock leaving me feeling unrested the next morning, that was the only thing I didn't enjoy about my stay. The view from the lodge room was breathtaking. They have swimming, cabins, a gift shop, a nature center. I've been here a few times and will continue to go back. This is a wonderful little getaway. read more

I give this 4 stars and not 5 for a few reasons. We planned for this trip to be mostly about 4 wheeling. The trails were entirely too difficult. We were bummed but we put the 4wheelrs away, rented a gold cart and explored, swam, kayaked, hiked and had the best time! We also wish there were better details about the hiking trails. The views we're gorgeous but we had someone on the semi-injured list with us and didn't intend for a 2 hour brutal hike (Belle Starr). It became miserable. Would have been nice to know beforehand. We will be back! Next time we know how to come prepared! read more

Is a nice place to get away and see nature. There is hiking and you need two good knees to get over the rough trails and inclines. It is nice to learn some of the history of the area before going. Backpackers and hikers BEWARE. The trails are VERY poorly marked and their trail maps do not reflect the actual trails. Be prepared to get lost. The ranger we met says he spends most of his time finding lost hikers, and with good reason. Also, their backpacking sites are $14 per site PER TENT. So three of us spent $84 for two nights at a primitive site that was an adventure to find. Also, there are three oil rigs on the park. One was running from 10 pm to 2 am one of the nights we were there, keeping my friend awake half the night. One final negative: you have to pay to use the showers at the front office. I've never seen that before. All that being said, it's beautiful countryside, so when you're not lost, you can enjoy the sights. read more

We really enjoyed our time camping here. There is a lot to do for outdoors families. Hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, and lots of accessibility to equestrian activities and are activities. The campsites are really close bu definitely feel like you are in the forest and mountains. Our campsite #2 in the pines trails was very wet. It had rained some prior to our visit but it stayed muddy. The fire pit was nowhere near the picnic table and lantern pole. Most were not set up like that though. The rangers or workers in the store in the other park were super friendly and helpful. read more

My cousin had her wedding her a few weeks ago. They live in Oklahoma and have family there and in Texas. We drove up and rented one of the duplex style cabins, us on one side and my folks on the other. We LOVED our stay here. The cabins were better equipped then some high end condos I have rented in the past! The views from the lodge are spectacular, that's where the ceremony was held. We had so much fun renting a golf cart and exploring the whole park! Some good hiking too- the staff of the park was very friendly also. It was a great weekend! read more

My 3 & 9-year-old and I just returned from our first trip to this state park and we had such a great time, that I wish we had one more day to enjoy the park. The park is built around "robbers cave" which was a cave that Belle Starr and the James brothers apparently hid out in. Beware - it's not really a cave so much as a little spot with a rock overhang, but it's still fun. There are trails around Robbers Cave and the caves surrounding it. There's the newer "moderate" trail and the old CCC trail from the 1930s, which is pretty strenuous. The sign leading into the trails explains that the CCC trail up to Devil's slide is the equivalent of climbing 8 flights of stairs (which I didn't read until after we'd climbed it and come back down again). The CCC trail back down leads through some really tight spots, one of which I didn't think I would actually make it through, but it was lots of fun. The kids loved this part of the park, and they were real troopers, but it would have been nice to have another adult with me just to make sure everyone was safe. We also walked the mountain trail, which is the beginning of 10 miles of trail throughout the park. It was a more traditional trail up and down moderate inclines in a forested area. As was the Boon Creek (I think?) trail, which was apparently only 2 miles long, but seemed much longer. In addition, there's a small nature center where the very sweet park ranger talked forever to the kids about whatever questions they had and let them touch the turtles and the snakes. She also lead us in a "hillbilly fishing" workshop where she taught the kids how to make cane pole fishing poles and fish in the lake, which the kiddos loved. There are two playgrounds, several lakes, miniature golf, etc. We stayed in one of the duplex cabins, which was much like all the other cabins I've stayed in at Oklahoma State parks. It's equipped with a small kitchen, complete with a bit of cookware & dinnerware, living room, bedroom, small bathroom, and fireplace. There are also TVs in the room that barely get 3 channels (but we weren't there to watch TV!). There are no phones at the cabins, but my AT&T cell phone did have service in the cabin, but not in the surrounding area. Overall the cabin was fine, and what I expected, except for the foldout couch in the living area. When I hear "foldout couch" I know it's not going to be the sleeping experience of a lifetime, but this thing was literally a nogahyde covered rectangle of foam that unfolded into a bed. I awoke at 3:30 am with serious pain all over my body and really couldn't go back to sleep after that. Thankfully, there's a coffee maker & coffee in the room, and the kids were so energetic all day, they kept me going. The cabins also have fire rings & cookers out back. We bought firewood at the tiny store which also serves at the cabin check in, and built a fairly good fire for dinner & smores. Regarding food, be prepared. There are no cafes anywhere near the park that are open on Sundays. We drove to the grocery in Wilburton, which is about 5 miles from the park, and bought all of our groceries for meals there. Every staff member I dealt with was incredibly friendly and helpful, with the exception of giving driving directions too quickly, as though I lived there & knew what streets were which. And, all the other campers we met were friendly as well, especially with the kids. Overall, it was a great experience, and we're definitely going back! read more

Love this park!!! So beautiful, so much to do... Really loved the hiking trails. The rough canyon trail was amazing as well as the bell Starr loop. Certainly a challenging terrain, but that's what I was looking for. The dog also had tons of fun. Stayed in a cabin which was okay. It was a duplex (#117) and each includes a stove, fridge, couch (but wouldn't want to sit/lay on it) and a queen bed in a separate room. AC/heater and fire place were available too. It's fairly simple, but a little outdated. I appreciated the stone floors- cold in the winter but cleaner than carpet. The only thing that I really didn't like was the connecting door. I could hear literally anything our neighbors talked about, so we just whispered lol. Anyway, other than that and my dog freaking out in the cabin due to all the noises, it was all good and will definitely come back!!! read more

This place has something for everyone! Fishing, hiking, bird watching, just plain ol' R&R. The duplex cabins were a real treat: one bedroom, one bathroom, kitchen/living room with fireplace and dining table. Outside is a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. My friends and I rented 3 duplex sites and really had a great time. We checked out the cave and enjoyed the scenery. The prices are extremely affordable and the tours are informative. The train ride is a kiddie train and lasts about 15 minutes. The registration center has all kinds of things for sale in case you forgot something. read more

Robbers cave is a nice getaway with lots to do for all ages. They have nice easy hikes as well as harder ones,horseback riding, playgrounds and a small beach. The park rangers were AMAZING, especially the park manager who came by to make sure everything was ok. The only thing i would recommend is better numbers for campsites, ours wasnt numbered and we initially had a hard time locating our campsite. Also, we booked 2 paddleboats ahead of time for each of our family of 4 at 130 and when we got there, only 1 was available. AND there are no refunds even though it was not our fault. I thought that was the oNly downside of this park. read more

This park is beautiful! They have done so much to spruce it up BUT it appears they forgot to send someone to clean the restrooms! I went into 3 different restores while we were there and everyone was the same - DISGUSTING! There was no toilet paper, the trash was overflowing to the floor, there was no soap, the water was cold and it stunk! Maybe with the future renovations they could make sure the bathrooms get cleaned! read more

Then down the hill (2 min drive) they had a lake where we paddled boats, swam, huge beautiful pool, mini golf, horse back, hiked in caves. It was awesome. Wish we stayed longer. read more
