If you're looking for a mechanic who actually knows what he's doing (a rare breed these days), go see Alex at Rob Baker's Garage. This man is the real deal. He's knowledgeable, fair, and genuinely a wonderful human being. He diagnosed my car issues quickly, explained everything in plain English, and didn't try to upsell me on nonsense. He even went the extra mile to make sure I could get back on the road safely after a week of bus-hopping. You can tell he takes pride in his work and cares about his customers. Honest mechanics are hard to come by, but Alex is one of the few you can trust without hesitation. I'm grateful for the help, the fairness, and the kindness. Highly, HIGHLY recommend. I recently made an appointment with Alex at Rob Bakers Garage for the third time in a row. I had made an appointment for an oil change and possibly a brake service. He physically inspected the oil and brakes, and then explained, "Wait until the oil light and the brake light go on. Give me a couple days to order the parts. A brake job takes a few hours, so plan to leave it all day." This is the third time he's assessed my car and not performed any UNNECESSARY services, not even the oil change for which I was prepared to pay. All of his time and expertise - complimentary without obligation whatsoever. Trust is essential to any decent business practice: I am a 60-year-old female lacking any knowledge of cars, except to drive them. I feel completely assured that Alex will not perform ANY unnecessary services. BTW, Alex was recommended by Professor Dave Hill, who taught Automative Technology at Skyline College for 40 years! I came in needing to get my 04 Jetta serviced at 150k miles. The mechanic and co-owner of the shop, Murad, did a full inspection and gave an estimate of everything that I will eventually need to replace starting with the most high-risk. I already understand the importance of the parts but he was kind enough to tell me that not all of his recommendations were necessary to do at once. Needless to say I took his warnings seriously and had him work on the following: * Transmission fluid change * Coolant service * Ignition tune up (spark plugs and wires, throttle body service, air filter, thermostat) * Replaced intake manifold gasket * Replaced two tires (balancing and rotation) In the end, we went on a test drive together to assess all the changes. There were some hiccups with the transmission so we went back and he quickly formulated a professional solution. All-in-all nothing was half-assed. My car is running better than ever, and I have him to thank for making my driving experience safer and more reliable. I can trust bringing my car back here again. Alex is incredible, and one common thing in these reviews that caught my attention is his trustworthiness. Alex truly cares about the customer. What can I say about Alex T? He has the passion and is driven about his cars. He definitely take cares of them like if it was his own. He make sure as a customer, you understand what was the issue. For me, it is hard to find a good reliable mechanic plus someone you can trust since being a woman. That is hard to find. In my past, I rely on my dad for help in the bay area. BUT I have to find my own reliable mechanic. I will definitely have Alex look at any of my car issues or problems that needed to be fix. We need more mechanics like Alex T. Unfortunately, too many of them scam others. My car, I thought I needed just an oil change BUT turn out my brake pads was wearing down metal to metal on my rotor. I learned that since ever since I step on my brakes. I heard a scratching sound like two metal rubbing each other. He explained to me why only one side since the caliper piston was stuck. He was explaining to me what he was doing to solve it also. read more

Great experience. I wanted a battery disconnect installed in my truck. Sent a request in via yelp on a Saturday. Alex responded right away. He had a couple questions and asked for photo of my battery cable setup. He said call on Monday. I came by instead. He saw me right away (I think he was eating lunch) He talked about best option. I was impressed by his knowledge and comfort level; battery disconnects are not an everyday item. Awesome Garage I have taken both of my cars to Alex several times and the service is awesome. He is honest, trustworthy, very knowledgeable and does not try to take your money. This last visit I went in for an oil change and to get a new tire. He ordered the tire for me and didn't try to sell me the most expensive tire on the market. When I picked up my car, he said that he topped off all my fluids and made sure all the tires had the correct air pressure. I said "thank you" and he said "good seeing you". Now who says that? In my whole time of ever owning a car I have never trusted even my dad's mechanic friend with all the seemingly overpriced car services and inadequate reasons to get so and so fixed... This place tells u real prices all upfront and discusses how much of a true priority each service is to get done. Got the 100 K check up on my car, and did all the necessary things to have it running healthy. My parents brought their car in because the radiator fan kept staying on for a long time after cutting off the engine. Rob checked and topped off the coolant. Rob charged my parents EIGHT DOLLARS for everything. (I didn't believe them either until I saw the receipt.) Down to Earth, Detail Oriented & Customer Service Mechanics I've been going to Rob Baker's Garage for years and cannot say enough great things about Rob and Alex (nicest and genuine guys ever). I have asked Alex to fix my Jeep with the weirdest issues and he researches (web searches, references, etc) until he gets to the root cause of the issue. He responds in record time, send pictures and details out his assessment. I have never got this level of service with any other mechanic (and don't even get me started about Putnam or dealerships). My dashboard light wasn't working so I went to Rob Baker's Garage. Explained to Alex what's happening with my dashboard and also asked if he can see why my rear defroster wasn't working since I was there. I needed service ASAP because it not easy driving in the evening with no lights. Right away he knew what could be the problem but said he'd check everything out. The nice thing about this location is there's a shopping strip a block away with Trader Joe, restaurants and other small shops to check out while your vehicle is being service. Alex called me when the repairs were done. When I arrived he clearly explained what was done. I asked how much I owed him and when he told me I thought he was just kidding compared to other quotes I was given from other shops I stopped at before his. Wow, that just shows you how easily shops rip people off especially women. It's so NICE to know there's still a honest auto repairs garage out there. Alex does great work. I work in the plaza next door so when I need my oil changed I drop my car off in the morning, tell him to take his time and when he's done he parks my car by my door and brings me my keys. Now is that excellent service or what? Trustworthy guy, he doesn't try and upsell you or suggest services that you dont actually need like some mechanics do. Fair prices as well. Wonderful service. Got my battery replaced and was worried I needed more service but Alex said everything else looked just great.

The garage has always been super helpful for getting my car and especially my tires back in good shape. The other week I punctured my tires twice and both times they were able to provide speedy service, still able to plug tires too despite most shops trying to overcharge for a patch. The diagnostic is cheap but won't save you much money when you need to have another diagnostic done by a more competent shop. In my case, they told me I'd need to spend thousands of dollars to fix the problem... but the shop down the street was able to fix it for a few hundred dollars! Went in for an oil change and brought my own oil. Alex was very honest and friendly. He let me watch the whole thing and answered any and all questions I had. A lot of other shops will just make you wait in a different room or away from the mechanic. At Rob Baker's, they are transparent about everything and you can see everything yourself. When Alex checked the car, there was a little transmission fluid that had leaked out and he showed me it was just due to the transmission plug not being tight enough. He also showed me the box of oil filter replacement he uses (pro-tec filters). All in all, very transparent, friendly, and honest service. I'll be going back for sure. read more
