Porchetta!
Latifa S.

Porchetta!! I came for porchetta!!!! And I got some too. This place is inside the market place. It's like other markets places minus the crowd. The food: rotisserie chicken! Roasted porchetta!! Porchetta bowls! Sandwiches!! Side rice and veggies. I came in for the combo thing but ended up just getting 2 different kinds of meat. The porchetta and the half a chicken. Chicken was a little dry but chopped right off the rotisserie for me! It was tasty. Very lean. The porchetta!! My favorite. This one however is made non traditional Italian way though: that lemon herb flavoring sort of ruined it for me. Probably the best meat spot Victoria! No fuss meat spot! I'll come back for a porchetta sandwich next time!! A solid 3.5!!

If you're looking for something quick but absolutely delicious, you gotta try Roast. Not to be confused as a coffee shop, they specialize in meat & sandwiches. I would also like to include that they make a MEAN salad! But I'll get to that. There is so much to this little shop inside the market and you'll find yourself continue to go back time and time again. I've been going to Roast for a few years now and I have tried everything on the menu from porchetta to chicken meatballs and I go through different rotations of what I order. Currently, I love ordering the meatball bowl with kale cesar and mixed veg. They have choices like: Kale Cesaer Salad, Rice, Mix Vegetables or Roasted Potatoes. All the choices are good! Check it out if you're looking for something delicious and dependable.

Porchetta sandwich. Don't be deceived by its look - so good!

There's a reason this Market spot has a long line at lunch - it's delicious!! My husband and I couldn't resist the look of the porchetta as we waited in line to order. A giant rolled roast with dark golden crispy exterior that cut like butter as it was chopped being up for sandwiches and more. I opted for the porchetta bowl and he for the porchetta sandwich. That chimichurri sauce is off the chain! Yes, I just said off the chain and no regrets.

The hardest part of your day will be deciding what to eat/buy at Roast. In fact, the entire market is chock full of awesome stuff so I'd recommend starting small or sharing food with friends. Everything here looks incredible! It was nearly impossible to walk past this station without drooling. And I'm not sure why I haven't seen this done before, but the whiskey smoked pulled pork sandwich came with crumbled pig skin on top. It was basically the vastly improved already genius idea of adding crunch to a sandwich by shoving in potato chips. Will definitely make Roast's stand a visit whenever I'm back in town.

Great vegetarian sandwich! Great value. Would definitely come back here. Plus, it's in an awesome dining hall. Great for a quick lunch.

I only found out about this shop from a Samantha Brown episode I watched about Victoria…read more Loy Sing Meat Market is the oldest Chinese business in North America, at 135 years old! The window to the shop is very unassuming, so it's easy to pass up compared to the big bright signs of other nearby restaurants. The space inside is tight. There isn't really anywhere to eat, except for a table in the back with a bowl of hot sauce that I think was available for customers to add to their dishes- but we completely forgot by the time we left. We ordered two small, simple dishes. The friendly workers (owners?) asked if we wanted the juice on the meat and we were like, "heck yeah!" Bbq Duck- The skin looked great and the dish was pretty tasty. However, as I ate it, I realized there were a lot of bones/cartilage where I thought there was meat. I was too hangry to have the patience to pick that meat off... so... this is not an easy dish to gobble. Crispy pork- OMG this was good. It was crispy and juicy. It was a bit more salty than I normally like... but at the same time, it was needed to season the rice a bit, so I was happy with it. This dish is very easy to gobble. For both meals, I was thankful we got the meat juice because it added just enough flavor to the white rice. By the way, the rice's texture was awesome... I can't quite explain. Like... the grains were separate, but just sticky enough to be able to be picked up easily by utensils. Anyway, this was my first time in Victoria and Loy Sing Meat Market was a place I HAD to visit while there. I'm so glad I tried it. If I'm ever on the island again, this will be one of my first stops. I can't believe I didn't try the bbq pork... I'm getting that next time. If there ever is a next time. Vancouver Island is not easy to get to.
