The Victoria Public Market definitely has a ways to go before it becomes a must visit destination when visiting the city. Roast is one of the food vendors here that I was pleasantly suprised by! Tasty meats like Porchetta, roast beef and rotisserie chicken served up in sandwhich, salad or bowl options. I particularly enjoyed the porchetta which had a nice crispy skin! The food scene in Victoria is incredible and we didn't expect this place to be restaurant quality. It's found in the Victoria Public Market and it had some near lunch options so my wife had a salad and I had a chicken bowl with the lemon rice. Not only was the food restaurant quality, the portions were huge, the staff were incredible and they all chatted with us. Dino, the chef, has been around the block and his skills are undeniable- both my wife and I were blown away. If you're in Victoria go get lunch at this place - it will blow your mind. read more

Porchetta!! I came for porchetta!!!! And I got some too. This place is inside the market place. It's like other markets places minus the crowd. The food: rotisserie chicken! Roasted porchetta!! Porchetta bowls! Sandwiches!! Side rice and veggies. I came in for the combo thing but ended up just getting 2 different kinds of meat. The porchetta and the half a chicken. Chicken was a little dry but chopped right off the rotisserie for me! It was tasty. Very lean. The porchetta!! My favorite. This is the keto eaters dream spot to visit. They have incredibly cooked meats and their chicharron are amazing. I will stop here and pick up a couple of their rotisserie chickens for dinner, which will fee my family and provide me with a great lunch the next day. The chicken is top notch and not like the slimy rotisserie chicken you find in some grocery stores. They also do an amazing kale salad that you can have with your choice of protein. The hardest part of your day will be deciding what to eat/buy at Roast. In fact, the entire market is chock full of awesome stuff so I'd recommend starting small or sharing food with friends. Everything here looks incredible! It was nearly impossible to walk past this station without drooling. And I'm not sure why I haven't seen this done before, but the whiskey smoked pulled pork sandwich came with crumbled pig skin on top. This place is being run by the proverbial inmates. The ninkumpoops there are clueless. Too bad. Typical millennial malaise...churning out bad attitude and arrogance. And it's expensive! Why it has a two dollar rating is bizarre!! The Hudson public market is chronically failing because these businesses are chronically dysfunctional. The only consistently good business in the market is the French bakery. But now that you can't park in the causeway it's not worth the effort to stop in there and pick something up. Perhaps the meat shop selling less tortured animals than thrifties is good? The pie shop is consistently subpar. The olive oil store was good last time I tried it. Overall ...So sad. Used to love this place but I will not be returning after the past two times. I went last week and the guy was mopping the floor and holding the broom, he then started taking my order and I wasn't looking very closely but I don't think he changed his blue latex gloves before he proceeded to grab the ingredients by hand to make my salad. I didn't think anything of it really. Then the time after that a different employee was cleaning the rotisserie oven, he was holding a soaped up rag and was washing the oven. He put down the rag then immediately started grabbing the ingredients using his dirty gloves to make my salad. I should've told him to change his gloves but I wasn't thinking fast enough and was just kind of grossed out. Ended up paying for the salad but I can't bring myself to eat it. It was a waste of $11 but I don't want to ingest chemicals or cleaning products and grease. Suffice it to say I am turned off of this place now. The hygiene and sanitation levels definitely need improvement. The employees need to change their gloves when transitioning from cleaning to interacting with the food. Little spot in the marketplace on Douglas st. It has a simple menu with three meat choices - beef, pork and chicken. All of them look delicious! The guy making the sandwiches was super friendly and chatty. I ordered the roast beef sandwich and my bf ordered the pork sandwich. We both got a pop to drink and it came to 26 or 27 bucks, I can't remember exactly. It was definitely too high. The sandwiches were delicious, yes and unique in that the ingredients are set. You don't tell them what you want on it for toppings. I would say they are under 6 inches though. So I find it too expensive. I likely wouldn't make it a point to drive here to eat again, perhaps if I was walking around downtown then I might choose it over something else if I'm looking for a sandy. Sunday December 15th this happened. Bought the 100g of chicharron for $5. As soon as we took a small bite, it tasted burnt and like it was fried in extremely dark oil. Very bitter and burnt aftertaste. Went right back after 15 seconds to ask for a refund. Cuz it was just bad :/ The blonde lady at the cash (we were at the market just before 2pm) instead of apologizing and doing the refund no problem. Treated us very bad and unprofessionally. She GRABBED the bag of chicharron back so hard and YANKED the leftover piece from my boyfriend's hand, without asking. I could easily report this woman, there are cameras in the market. No employee should physically assault a customer over a refund, specially when they were calm about it the entire time. My family and I stumbled upon Roast when we decided to go on an adventure in the Victoria Public Market. I was drawn in by the gigantic crackling they had on display and was hooked by their streamlined yet large menu. On my first visit I had a Porchetta Bowl with lemon kokuho rice with extra meat. I appreciated the fact that you could turn sandwiches into bowls and, if you wanted a lo carb version or strictly protein & vegetables you had the option to make it a salad. This was my first experience with Italian porchetta and it did not disappoint: it was rich and succulent, buttery and the crunch of the skin, the texture, broke up the richness. I enjoyed the bowl because I could see all the different components and how they intermingled. On our next visit - which was the next day because our family loved it so - I opted for the Beef Sandwich as my sister had stated was the beef was even better than the porchetta. I was intrigued. I didn't eat it right away but the sandwich held up really well! The meat was a beautiful medium doneness, the chimichurri was still fresh and did not cause the bun to go soggy, if anything letting the sandwich sit for a couple hours let the flavours marry. It was just a perfect sandwich. I am sad that I couldn't stay in Victoria longer to explore Roast more, however I will be on the quest for a similar sandwich in Vancouver. Wandering through the Victoria Public Market, Roast caught my eye. The display of their porchetta and prime rib at the bar had my salivating. I ordered their porchetta sandwich which came with provolone cheese and broccoli rabe. Crunchy and delicious - everything I imaged it to be. They also offer rotisserie chickens and they cater! A take-out fresh roast carvery is a great idea, but be prepared, it's expensive . . . . For $9.50 I got about three thin slices of sliced, savoury roast beef, medium-well, on a fresh crusty Portuguese-like bun. It was topped with a garlicky chimichurri sauce and pickled onion strings. All prepared before your eyes. It's about a 4 inch, medium sized bunwich that is super delicious. It cost $25.50 to take out two sandwiches and two cans of Loca pops for a picnic. Whoa. Any menu item is simply mouth watering and the service is fantastic. A great selection of local brew pops is a nice treat. The pops are all self serve with giant taps like serving beer from a keg. The main detracting factor of roast is portion size and price. At $30 dollars for two people, you get a sandwich and a pop each. Not really see inspiring value. It was a no-brainer for me. Half a pound of beef, or roasted chicken. As previous readers will note, I love chicken in all its forms. Oh yes, it was local and ethically raised. The Brunette checked. We added in a hand tossed salad. That consists of a big tray of leaves, a scoop of meat and some extras. We decided on lettuce leaves, rare beef cubes, black quinoa, pumpkin seeds, cucumber and tomato mixture. Unsure what to dress it with, we asked for some advice. I love this place! This sandwich shop is in an indoor marketplace with lots of others cool places. I came for lunch and had a great Porchetta Sandwich (Yummy), we also tried the crunchy Chicharrón inside (Tasty). I've never had a sandwich like this before.
