The Victoria Public Market definitely has a ways to go before it becomes a must visit destination when visiting the city. Roast is one of the food vendors here that I was pleasantly suprised by! Tasty meats like Porchetta, roast beef and rotisserie chicken served up in sandwhich, salad or bowl options. I particularly enjoyed the porchetta which had a nice crispy skin! The cup or meatballs ate also a nice addition as well. I came here twice during my last trip to Victoria for that porchetta action! read more

The food scene in Victoria is incredible and we didn't expect this place to be restaurant quality. It's found in the Victoria Public Market and it had some near lunch options so my wife had a salad and I had a chicken bowl with the lemon rice. Not only was the food restaurant quality, the portions were huge, the staff were incredible and they all chatted with us. Dino, the chef, has been around the block and his skills are undeniable- both my wife and I were blown away. If you're in Victoria go get lunch at this place - it will blow your mind. read more

A perfect lunch spot or for takeaway, this Italian meat lovers dream will hit it out of the park for you. Located inside the Victoria Public markets, it has some sitdown seating to eat there or you can takeaway. Had the meatballs which were dense and meaty (not a lot of fillers) and flavorful with a topping of Arrabiata sauce and a little pesto drizzle too. Delicious! There's also a focaccia pizza and pasta sister restaurant attached that looked tasty too! read more

Food was delicious, had the roasted chicken bowl. Chicken was juicy and tender, the roasted veggies were amazing and so were the potatoes. The service was also wonderful! A must visit! read more

Porchetta!! I came for porchetta!!!! And I got some too. This place is inside the market place. It's like other markets places minus the crowd. The food: rotisserie chicken! Roasted porchetta!! Porchetta bowls! Sandwiches!! Side rice and veggies. I came in for the combo thing but ended up just getting 2 different kinds of meat. The porchetta and the half a chicken. Chicken was a little dry but chopped right off the rotisserie for me! It was tasty. Very lean. The porchetta!! My favorite. This one however is made non traditional Italian way though: that lemon herb flavoring sort of ruined it for me. Probably the best meat spot Victoria! No fuss meat spot! I'll come back for a porchetta sandwich next time!! A solid 3.5!! read more

If you're looking for something quick but absolutely delicious, you gotta try Roast. Not to be confused as a coffee shop, they specialize in meat & sandwiches. I would also like to include that they make a MEAN salad! But I'll get to that. There is so much to this little shop inside the market and you'll find yourself continue to go back time and time again. I've been going to Roast for a few years now and I have tried everything on the menu from porchetta to chicken meatballs and I go through different rotations of what I order. Currently, I love ordering the meatball bowl with kale cesar and mixed veg. They have choices like: Kale Cesaer Salad, Rice, Mix Vegetables or Roasted Potatoes. All the choices are good! Check it out if you're looking for something delicious and dependable. read more

Had the salad with beef. Giant thing, very tasty with poppadew (sic) peppers. Pork skin was excellent as well. Check it out if you're in Victoria. read more

There's a reason this Market spot has a long line at lunch - it's delicious!! My husband and I couldn't resist the look of the porchetta as we waited in line to order. A giant rolled roast with dark golden crispy exterior that cut like butter as it was chopped being up for sandwiches and more. I opted for the porchetta bowl and he for the porchetta sandwich. That chimichurri sauce is off the chain! Yes, I just said off the chain and no regrets. read more

The hardest part of your day will be deciding what to eat/buy at Roast. In fact, the entire market is chock full of awesome stuff so I'd recommend starting small or sharing food with friends. Everything here looks incredible! It was nearly impossible to walk past this station without drooling. And I'm not sure why I haven't seen this done before, but the whiskey smoked pulled pork sandwich came with crumbled pig skin on top. It was basically the vastly improved already genius idea of adding crunch to a sandwich by shoving in potato chips. Will definitely make Roast's stand a visit whenever I'm back in town. read more

This is the keto eaters dream spot to visit. They have incredibly cooked meats and their chicharron are amazing. I will stop here and pick up a couple of their rotisserie chickens for dinner, which will fee my family and provide me with a great lunch the next day. The chicken is top notch and not like the slimy rotisserie chicken you find in some grocery stores. They also do an amazing kale salad that you can have with your choice of protein. If I need a quick and high quality meal, this is where I come. read more

So many meats to choose from. I like the fact that you can get a sandwich or a salad version without the bread. The roasted chicken was tender, moist, & flavorful. The Porchetta was super crispy skin, flavorful & tender, wasn't salty at all. The salad was great. Roast beef was also delish. Worth trying everything here pics posted on instagram @amanda.n_ read more

There was a huge line when we got there but quickly died down as we went to venture rest of the market.. We got the porchetta bowl with kale cease and rice for $10 The sides are nothing special, in fact the rice is just plain old white rive. The porchetta did have a nice crunch but very small amount given... Not sure what the big craze is about... It's average... This place is being run by the proverbial inmates. The ninkumpoops there are clueless. Too bad. Typical millennial malaise...churning out bad attitude and arrogance. And it's expensive! Why it has a two dollar rating is bizarre!! The Hudson public market is chronically failing because these businesses are chronically dysfunctional. The only consistently good business in the market is the French bakery. But now that you can't park in the causeway it's not worth the effort to stop in there and pick something up. Perhaps the meat shop selling less tortured animals than thrifties is good? The pie shop is consistently subpar. The olive oil store was good last time I tried it. Overall ...So sad. Victoria is an anarchists angry mess. read more

Used to love this place but I will not be returning after the past two times. I went last week and the guy was mopping the floor and holding the broom, he then started taking my order and I wasn't looking very closely but I don't think he changed his blue latex gloves before he proceeded to grab the ingredients by hand to make my salad. I didn't think anything of it really. Then the time after that a different employee was cleaning the rotisserie oven, he was holding a soaped up rag and was washing the oven. He put down the rag then immediately started grabbing the ingredients using his dirty gloves to make my salad. I should've told him to change his gloves but I wasn't thinking fast enough and was just kind of grossed out. Ended up paying for the salad but I can't bring myself to eat it. It was a waste of $11 but I don't want to ingest chemicals or cleaning products and grease. Suffice it to say I am turned off of this place now. The hygiene and sanitation levels definitely need improvement. The employees need to change their gloves when transitioning from cleaning to interacting with the food. It's a shame since the quality of the food is so good. read more

Little spot in the marketplace on Douglas st. It has a simple menu with three meat choices - beef, pork and chicken. All of them look delicious! The guy making the sandwiches was super friendly and chatty. I ordered the roast beef sandwich and my bf ordered the pork sandwich. We both got a pop to drink and it came to 26 or 27 bucks, I can't remember exactly. It was definitely too high. The sandwiches were delicious, yes and unique in that the ingredients are set. You don't tell them what you want on it for toppings. I would say they are under 6 inches though. So I find it too expensive. I likely wouldn't make it a point to drive here to eat again, perhaps if I was walking around downtown then I might choose it over something else if I'm looking for a sandy. Otherwise, too pricey. read more

I was on a waking tour in Victoria and this was one of the spots they stopped to have samples. We had the beef/pork meatballs and they were fantastic, so freaking good. I ended up going back and getting a meatball sandwich later on, spot on, and I never order meatballs. Highly recommended! read more

My family and I stumbled upon Roast when we decided to go on an adventure in the Victoria Public Market. I was drawn in by the gigantic crackling they had on display and was hooked by their streamlined yet large menu. On my first visit I had a Porchetta Bowl with lemon kokuho rice with extra meat. I appreciated the fact that you could turn sandwiches into bowls and, if you wanted a lo carb version or strictly protein & vegetables you had the option to make it a salad. This was my first experience with Italian porchetta and it did not disappoint: it was rich and succulent, buttery and the crunch of the skin, the texture, broke up the richness. I enjoyed the bowl because I could see all the different components and how they intermingled. On our next visit - which was the next day because our family loved it so - I opted for the Beef Sandwich as my sister had stated was the beef was even better than the porchetta. I was intrigued. I didn't eat it right away but the sandwich held up really well! The meat was a beautiful medium doneness, the chimichurri was still fresh and did not cause the bun to go soggy, if anything letting the sandwich sit for a couple hours let the flavours marry. It was just a perfect sandwich. I am sad that I couldn't stay in Victoria longer to explore Roast more, however I will be on the quest for a similar sandwich in Vancouver. If not, I will be forced to make an escape for another taste. read more

Sunday December 15th this happened. Bought the 100g of chicharron for $5. As soon as we took a small bite, it tasted burnt and like it was fried in extremely dark oil. Very bitter and burnt aftertaste. Went right back after 15 seconds to ask for a refund. Cuz it was just bad :/ The blonde lady at the cash (we were at the market just before 2pm) instead of apologizing and doing the refund no problem. Treated us very bad and unprofessionally. She GRABBED the bag of chicharron back so hard and YANKED the leftover piece from my boyfriend's hand, without asking. I could easily report this woman, there are cameras in the market. No employee should physically assault a customer over a refund, specially when they were calm about it the entire time. Saying stuff like "thats how its always made" and also "but whatever" very unprofessional. read more

Wandering through the Victoria Public Market, Roast caught my eye. The display of their porchetta and prime rib at the bar had my salivating. I ordered their porchetta sandwich which came with provolone cheese and broccoli rabe. Crunchy and delicious - everything I imaged it to be. They also offer rotisserie chickens and they cater! There is also a mini market that stocks products from local and BC companies too. A great place to grab a quick bite to eat. Will be back the next time I'm in Victoria! read more

A take-out fresh roast carvery is a great idea, but be prepared, it's expensive . . . . For $9.50 I got about three thin slices of sliced, savoury roast beef, medium-well, on a fresh crusty Portuguese-like bun. It was topped with a garlicky chimichurri sauce and pickled onion strings. All prepared before your eyes. It's about a 4 inch, medium sized bunwich that is super delicious. It cost $25.50 to take out two sandwiches and two cans of Loca pops for a picnic. Whoa. I'd say this is a treat lunch. High quality yes. Worth a visit, but not necessarily affordable for what you get. read more

Greatest of ALL time. Meatballs are the bomb. Had bucket of balls beef and pork. Husband had pork sandwich. Both were excellent. Love the sauce.

Roast is a tasty treat to be sure, but bring a full wallet. The quality of the meats and salads on offers at roast are simply fantastic. Any menu item is simply mouth watering and the service is fantastic. A great selection of local brew pops is a nice treat. The pops are all self serve with giant taps like serving beer from a keg. The main detracting factor of roast is portion size and price. At $30 dollars for two people, you get a sandwich and a pop each. Not really see inspiring value. The sandwiches are not particularly large and I was left wanting more. Roast is a tasty indulgence that will please the taste buds, but lacks too much value to be a regular lunch spot. read more

For $13, we got a fresh roasted chicken, straight out of the oven. The skin was crispy, and the smell of rosemary and lemon wafted over us briefly before the bird was sealed into a plastic to-go bag. It was a no-brainer for me. Half a pound of beef, or roasted chicken. As previous readers will note, I love chicken in all its forms. Oh yes, it was local and ethically raised. The Brunette checked. We added in a hand tossed salad. That consists of a big tray of leaves, a scoop of meat and some extras. We decided on lettuce leaves, rare beef cubes, black quinoa, pumpkin seeds, cucumber and tomato mixture. Unsure what to dress it with, we asked for some advice. The gent behind the counter suggested the simple Italian. More at: http://victoria-in-person.blogspot.ca/2015/11/roast-downtown-victoria.html read more

Place was good until they started out weighing out the exact amount of meat they give you in the sandwich and bowl. At 3.5 ounces per order it's roughly half the serving size as before and just not worth the price. read more

Great vegetarian sandwich! Great value. Would definitely come back here. Plus, it's in an awesome dining hall. Great for a quick lunch.

I love this place! This sandwich shop is in an indoor marketplace with lots of others cool places. I came for lunch and had a great Porchetta Sandwich (Yummy), we also tried the crunchy Chicharrón inside (Tasty). I've never had a sandwich like this before. I also liked their local Bottles of sodas with real sugar! A great place at a great location - I'll be back! read more

Not a terrible place, but all of their sandwiches are overpriced and loaded with pesto - to the point it becomes annoying to eat. I enjoy the atmosphere of the public market more-so than the food. read more

I think they may have gone downhill because reading the good reviews made me scratch my head. If you want to pay 10 dollars for a bun be my guest, the meat is absent in these "amazing" sandwiches. Excellent sandwich place. A little on the more expensive side but great Porchetta sandwich.

Wandered in to see what the fuss was all about. If you are a carnivore or love someone who is you MUST come in and watch meats expertly sliced by Geirge-one of the owners. Pork roast (among others) with perfect cracklin sliced up for one of the best sandwiches you'll eat and potatoes and mixed roasted veggies.
