I only found out about this shop from a Samantha Brown episode I watched about Victoria…read more Loy Sing Meat Market is the oldest Chinese business in North America, at 135 years old! The window to the shop is very unassuming, so it's easy to pass up compared to the big bright signs of other nearby restaurants. The space inside is tight. There isn't really anywhere to eat, except for a table in the back with a bowl of hot sauce that I think was available for customers to add to their dishes- but we completely forgot by the time we left. We ordered two small, simple dishes. The friendly workers (owners?) asked if we wanted the juice on the meat and we were like, "heck yeah!" Bbq Duck- The skin looked great and the dish was pretty tasty. However, as I ate it, I realized there were a lot of bones/cartilage where I thought there was meat. I was too hangry to have the patience to pick that meat off... so... this is not an easy dish to gobble. Crispy pork- OMG this was good. It was crispy and juicy. It was a bit more salty than I normally like... but at the same time, it was needed to season the rice a bit, so I was happy with it. This dish is very easy to gobble. For both meals, I was thankful we got the meat juice because it added just enough flavor to the white rice. By the way, the rice's texture was awesome... I can't quite explain. Like... the grains were separate, but just sticky enough to be able to be picked up easily by utensils. Anyway, this was my first time in Victoria and Loy Sing Meat Market was a place I HAD to visit while there. I'm so glad I tried it. If I'm ever on the island again, this will be one of my first stops. I can't believe I didn't try the bbq pork... I'm getting that next time. If there ever is a next time. Vancouver Island is not easy to get to.

Awesome butcher shop! They have goodies like rendered duck, chicken, beef and lamb fats, bone…read morebroth, lamb kidney, they were out of liver and heart but said they carried it. Plenty of frozen off season like duck meat. House cured sausages, pepperonis of several spicy levels, and bacon. The price sticker indicates the cut, price, farm where the meat originated/distance from the shop, and the animal's diet. The guy who helped me was super nice and patient with my browsing. He answered my questions and grabbed the pieces I asked for instead of the biggest ones. I've cooked up half of what I bought and the meat is excellent. The shop is spacious and comfortable and has pantry items, freezer and dairy on the perimeter walls so if you need to wait it's not unpleasant to do so.

Holy meat heaven! You know what I ordered here? The WHOLE BEAST. No joke!…read more My boyfriend and I heard rumors of this heavenly place and took a cab to go find it. We raced there to make sure we weren't going to miss them (they closed at 4pm on this day) and as soon as we got in the door we looked around and pretty much ordered a little but of everything. The salamis and cured meats are spectacular, the selection is out of this world, the head cheeses are tasty, and the liverwurst and mortadella blew my mind. We had the meat sweats for days because we took everything back to our hotel, wrapped it in baguettes and cheese and just ate forever. It was pretty ridiculous but we couldn't have it any other way. Customs wouldn't let us take it back across the border, and we couldn't wait long enough anyway. Best money I've spent in Victoria, hands down. Do not miss this store if you're looking to host a party, have a great dinner, or impress someone with with a locally made meat-gift! I don't think I have to go overboard next time but I don't think I could visit Victoria again and not come back for more meat.

We are regulars here and can't seem to want to buy our meat from anywhere else…read more We like to buy the pepperoni sticks, packaged sliced meat, steak, and cheeses. During the holidays we do the turkey orders and they are always popular with our family! But we don't just buy meat for us, we also buy meat for our cats. The owner, Lloyd, supplies us with duck that has been ground into cubes so that we can give it to our cats. Because of the raw food, I have been able to take one of our cats off medication for pancreatitis. If you've never been to the meat shop, be ready for a lineup. It is always busy in there, but busy for a reason. The meats are high quality and come from local farms. The animals are ethically raised.

Like the typical Chinese grocery stores, cash is the king. When I pulled out two C$5 bills that were vintages from 25 years ago, the cashier was amazed. Fortunately she accepted it but rejected my € coins. Ha! What an adventure.
