As usual, the process involved forms, fees and time if going through the DMV. So, my son and I visited our local AAA to see if they could make it easier and faster. It was then that we met Alena Avedisian, one of the frontline Member Specialists. Alena started and completed the process in around 20 minutes. We filled out a form and paid a $15 transfer fee and voila! Finished. Alena provided friendly, competent and efficient service that far exceeded our expectations. But AAA wasn't finished. We inquired about getting insurance as well. So we were introduced to, and attended by, Ryan Cope. We went back to Ryan's workspace and told him about our current State Farm policy and the insured limits we wanted to get. Ryan produced a quote for 12 months of car insurance... that was less than half of what State Farm was charging us... for the same coverage. Done! We paid for the insurance. Once again I was welcomed immediately upon entering the office and given instructions as to what would happen next. Within 3 minutes I was called to Joseph's work station. Joseph was also welcoming, very knowledgeable and kindhearted during our interaction. We were informed that I needed a more current smog test. He directed us to a close location to get a smog yest and certification. After completing the smog test, we returned, did not have to wait in line and our transfer of ownership was complete. Joseph was so efficient and professional. Again, this AAA location met my needs with efficiency, kindness and professionalism. A big thank you to Joseph!

It is quite a process, mail in a check for $50. along with the voucher, then after receiving confirmation in the mail, mail in another $50. check along with a proposed date for the vacation, then talk to them on the phone to book the actual trip. When booking was told that the free stay would be at some Motel 6 quality place up the hill in Avalon that was too far to walk to easily (especially with luggage) and that we'd have to rent a golf cart to get there with a two hour minimum at $70. an hour (eventually we found out this wasn't quite true, that the minimum is actually one hour, but still, the idea of renting a golf cart just to get to a cheap hotel and then having to return it and walk back didn't sound so fun). Anyway after being advised of the prospect of having to pay for a taxi or golf cart trip just to stay at a Motel 6 type place, it wasn't hard to convince me to pay an extra $345. to stay at a better hotel, which was the Casa Avalon. I checked Casa Avalon at the time I made the choice and it looked like a few hundred dollars a night to stay in a king bed "superior" room (later it turned out that I could have gotten the room for more like two hundred a night), so it seemed like a good deal and we went for it. Casa Avalon is pretty close to the water front, and not a bad hotel, not fancy but decent and clean, with free water bottles in the lobby and a refrigerator in the room. The package did include free tickets to and from Catalina on the Catalina Express boat. I'd say that over all, after checking and realizing that mid week I could have booked rooms directly at Casa Avalon for a couple hundred a night, all we saved was maybe $200. maybe less by utilizing the "free" trip voucher. However, what the voucher did get us to do, was go to Catalina in the first place. We have stayed in Catalina before for a longer trip at a nicer hotel, but we probably would not have gone to Catalina at all, at least not right now, were it not for this voucher. So the voucher did get us out the door on an unplanned vacation and that was something!

I thought I would receive some good hotel and tour recommendations, but what I received was much more valuable. At every hotel/B&B/Castle we stayed in we received upgrades (free breakfast/ larger rooms with 5-Star views/ complementary massages, etc...) that were worth at least $2,000 when added up (although it is hard to put a price on some of the views). Also to my surprise, our airfare was lower than what we had found using various travel websites. Cathy met with us several times before our trip to insure she had covered all of our needs and then tracked us during our travels to insure we were receiving all of the extra perks, and upon our return she inquired as to any changes we would suggest to the itinerary she suggested. I would highly recommend Cathy to anyone planning a trip and will be using her on all future trips!!!

Our child just returned from the Spring 2026 trip to Washington DC and I wanted to share some…read moreimpressions. Overall, they enjoyed the trip, learned a lot, and saw a lot of interesting historical sites. Although, there were a couple of undesirable aspects to the trip too which I wanted to highlight for parents considering this trip in the future. Arguably, the trip's pace was just too fast. It's planned in such a way that the kids started and ended the trip with a sleep deficit and had difficulty getting a proper amount of sleep each night. The trip started with an outbound red-eye flight departing LAX, on-time, close to midnight PT and landing in DC at 7:30am ET. I think most would agree that a red-eye flight in a coach seat is not going to be conducive to sleep. Upon landing the kids had a fully packed day with a lot of bus travel and touring, and they did not get to an actual bed until late in the evening on arrival day. Each day of the trip was exceptionally long and fully packed with activities. This can be good on the one hand, to get the most out of the trip, but there's a downside too. My child shared that they were generally getting up between 6-7am and most days they did not get back to their hotel rooms until 10-11pm at night. With 4 kids sharing a room / bathroom (and showering at night), it took a little time before they could get the lights off to sleep, once they finally did get back to their hotel rooms. They never managed to get a reasonable amount of sleep each night because of this. This wasn't a case of kids staying up too late goofing around. Their return flight left DC in the evening, with the kids arriving back at the parent pick-up point at 12:15 am PT, which was 3:15am ET (i.e. the middle of the night for them). Part of the tour group was booked on an even later flight and arrived after that. Thankfully, all flights arrived on time, which is rare these days, but travel would have been even harder on the kids had there been any flight delays. A lesser concern relates to the meals offered on the trip. Our child reported that they didn't eat well on the trip due to limited food options at most organized meals or issues with the food's quality. Certainly, no one was expecting gourmet food on this trip, but it does sound like a lot of processed foods were served and there was a lack of healthy food options. I don't have first-hand knowledge about this, as I am only going by what my child told me. We attended an informational meeting for the trip two weeks before departure, where one of the teacher / chaperons from AEW giving the presentation kept reiterating just how "fast paced" the trip would be. She said the kids won't do well on the trip if they don't get enough sleep or are eating poorly. In hindsight, those comments seem ironic given that the trip organizers put the kids in a position to not get enough sleep while limiting their food choices to a lot of mediocre, processed food. It was annoying to have her go on-and-on in that meeting about just how fast-paced the trip would be, since this was the first time TravelED provided any indication of the trip's rapid pacing and red-eye flights. The positives of this trip generally outweighed the negative and I appreciate the organizers giving local kids this opportunity in the first place. Most importantly, the kids were safe and secure throughout the trip. Yet, there is room for improvement on the TravelED DC Trip. I doubt the trip would've been any less enjoyable or educational if a couple of the less popular sites or activities were skipped in favor of a more balanced schedule. Additional and higher quality food options would be an improvement too. Finally, at a minimum the trip organizers could do a better job of setting expectations before the trip is already paid for and too late to cancel with refund. This would include being more upfront about the fast paced nature of the trip, providing a sample itinerary with daily start and end times, and indicating the expectation for red-eye flights.
