Like the best parts of New Orleans it is strange and wonderful and filled with surprises. We frequented this shop no less than 3 times in the same week and we never walked out empty handed. Some reviews suggest the prices are high-I did not find that to be the case. The variety was crazy, the quality of products solid and the staff were super kind and helpful. I am a bit annoyed (but I understand) the all sales final policy. I had bought a mask for my son and it didn't end up fitting him. So we bought another. Oh well. This shop is on regular rotation for just about all my fancy costume needs and I'm glad it's conveniently located on Decatur in the French Quarter. What I especially appreciate is how helpful the employees are. The other day I was looking for the ladies version of my husband's elaborate jacket that gets him compliments whenever he wears it on parade day or Mardi Gras itself. Although there wasn't a ladies version, I was helped out to find a long button-up vest that was the perfect match. I'm still thinking on it but will likely go back and purchase it. Items here are of better quality than other similar shops, so this of course commands a higher price. It's not just costumes though. Looking for goth/steampunk/new romantic/rockabilly styles? They've totally got you here. The shoe collection is also impressive. While the front of the store appears small, it goes back pretty deep and I have no doubt you'll find whatever your dark little heart desires here. read more

5 Stars! I'm a NOLA local. The heel of my platform boot fell off one shoe in the Quarter Halloween weekend and I hailed a taxi to get me to Roadkill as fast as possible because I knew they could save my outfit (and I knew they closed in 15 minutes). When I arrived the door was locked and they were cleaning. Even though I felt awful doing so - I knocked on the door. To my absolute delight - once I explained my problem they let me in and quickly found me the perfect replacement boots and got me on my way back to fun! Such sweet humanity to open up a store for a stranger at night. Will not be forgotten! And they even saved the box and my sad broken boots for my husband to retrieve the next day. Gawd, I loved this place. My kid is all gothed out lately and the stuff in here answered the mail for sure. If you're looking for some of the coolest gear in town for a night out then Road Kill is the place for you. I have to say, though, I wouldn't call this a costume store (as some reviewers have). This is a place for day-to-day wear for awesome people. I'm so glad I set a spending limit before entry because we could easily justify a second mortgage on our house buying all of the amazing stuff in this store. Sales staff were amazing too. SCAM! RACIST! RUDE! DO NOT ENTER THIS SHOP. if you enter, never spend money in this place. This man is the rudest and meanest human I've ever encountered. I was helped by a young lady and chose three pieces which she set aside for me at the cashier. When going up to pay, this man in the picture told me to get out of the store. I only took these pictures AFTER my experience, and did not take any pictures while shopping around. I wanted these pictures for the review to be able to warn others. Being completely caught off guard of him trying to kick me out of the store, I thought I didn't hear right. I will also mention that I am a New Orleans local, with an accent, and this was not my first time at this shop. This time, this man just told me to "F off" and get out. Never have I ever had such a horrible and embarrassing experience. Went to this overpriced store to purchase a few pieces for burning man. Picked up two coats and a vest and went to pay. When getting to the cashier, met a guy who after speaking to a few locals around we understand he is the owner and his name is John. John immediately looked and us and said- "get out of here, I'm not going to sell you anything". We were absolutely shocked. We thought we didn't hear right. We asked him, "can we buy these?" And he replied "no, I'm having a bad day, get out of my store." Two of these coats were almost $200 each, we weren't trying to buy peanuts! After going outside I realized I was wearing a necklace with a Jewish star. This might have been his issue, but he didn't say it was. I DO NIT RECOMMEND GOING HERE. read more

They have a variety wicked cool clothing and shoes plus boots for both men and women. They have 3 rooms filled with tons of items. You won't be disappointed. Their staff is friendly and professional. Awesome store close to the French market. It popped up while searching for alt stores in New Orleans and I'm glad I stopped by. I was even more surprised at the variety and sizes of the clothing. Casual goth, corsets, period pieces, etc. If you like alt clothes, shoes or accessories then you should try this place. The staff was super helpful and friendly, and I was able to walk out with some cute pieces which is rare for me for being plus size. I totally loved a dress hanging in their window, but sadly, it wasn't in my size. One of the things that kept it from being a 5star establishment is their sign saying "no pictures." Wait! Had a magnificent time at Road Kill, thanks not only to the great selection but the amazing staff. Zombie chatted with us all through our time in the store, joking and giving us the low-down on products. He cheerfully fetched a bunch of different shoes to try on, and even gave my friend and I a list of other cool New Orleans spots for those inclined to spooky stuff. Prices are a bit high, but reasonable for the kinds of alternative clothing (Demonia, Hell Bunny) the store carries--the Demonia boots in particular were much cheaper than I've seen them elsewhere. This place has such an awesome selection of really unique clothing and accessories. I purchased the most gorgeous pair of pink glitter Doc Martens, and was tempted to purchase even more. The women working there were very helpful when my boss was trying on these awesome New Orleans boots. In the back room they had 50% clearance shoes and incredible fancy jackets. There were sequin jackets mermaid-style (so if the sequins were flipped up there were one color and if flipped down they're another color). Absolutely beautiful and unique items to be found here if you have the time to search (which we did not). Careful: it is hard not to spend all your hard-earned money here. Among other things, they had: wallets, all types of shoes, dresses, corsets, makeup, rings, necklaces, and funky novelty items. read more

I would never have gone into this store if it weren't for a referral by Southern Costumes. I was looking for costume pieces for an 18th century style corset, skirt etc and they could not have been more helpful and encouraging. The corsets they offer are great quality for the price. As good as the custom made styles I've purchased for much more. They were great in helping me with accessory ideas and can offer customization by their distributors when needed. Just stopped by today for the first time. The sales associates were very nice + intentional with helping me! (Especially for a Thursday afternoon in the French Quarter when it gets super busy with/ tourist rush.) I came in to purchase a pair of Dr.Martens. They don't have a huge variety of Dr.Martens (I've had my eyes on the Flora and was a tad disappointed they didn't have them in stock.) HOWEVER, this is the ONLY place in New Orleans that sells Dr.Martens so I can't complain too much. (Note: The local Urban outfitters doesn't have them.) Not only did Emma help me pick out the perfect boots, she also offered tips on how to wear them in quicker + what brand of socks are best for preventing blisters. The store itself was really eclectic and neat. All sorts of people were shopping there, which speaks to the diversity of its merchandise. I will definitely make another trip back! read more

I've been shopping with Road Kill for years. This last weekend's experience made me happier than ever! I popped in hoping to find a canvas messenger bag. One of their female staff directed me to where they had the bags. I didn't see anything I liked, and on my way out flipped over the tag of a sweater I saw when I first walked in. Sure enough they had a large so I figured I'd at least try it on. It was beautiful! I had my mom weigh in on the sizing since most of these novelty shops usually carry junior department sizing, I asked if by any chance the sweater was available in an XL. Another staff member went upstairs into their loft and dug around--YES they had an XL. That sealed the deal! After being complimented on my dress at checkout I practically floated out of that door on a cloud! In addition to a great selection of apparel, bags, and body jewelry, they also offer a selection of shoes. I'll have to edit this review when I can recall the brand, but they are ideal for the Quarter walking; lightweight, similar to sandals but with a closed toe! read more

This may be the best costume shop in New Orleans. The caliber of their clothes and shoes is a notch above what you'll find elsewhere, with a quality of merchandise that transcends costumery (not that costuming is a trifling thing here in New Orleans), and becomes uncommon everyday wear, especially for the Goth and Punk among us. The corset and jacket selections are great, and hats, purses, props and jewelry will help you round out your costume. The shoes! I'm going to buy some just for dress up. The lovely people who you'll encounter here are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, and will assist you whether you're one of those people (me) who spends half the year putting together a costume, or are a visitor getting a last minute Mardi Gras or Halloween ensemble. First 1 Star I can remember! You know this was a REALLY cool store to walk around. I did not see the sign that said no pictures. HONEST MISTAKE FOR A RESPECTFUL SOUTHERN COUPLE! We snapped a pic of a shirt and were yelled at, told to erase (which I immediately did and apologized!), but then banned from the store and told to leave immediately. This mama bear remembers that sorta shit. WAY overpriced - the men's pearl snap rockabilly shirts are $33 on Amazon. The brand is Rockmount Ranch Western Wear to save the trouble of trying to remember or getting banned for life for snapping a pic. I am not sure if the old man with the beard is an owner, but after coming to New Orleans at least 4 times inthe past 7 years and shopping at all the witch and voodoo shops each time as I am very much into the wicca religion and working on additional types of castings, I have never been treated so rude in all those times by an older employee. I hope to believe he is not an owner with such insecurity that I had pointed out I found a product they sell for 59.00 is for sale on an internet site for 28.99. I was told they probably were not as good. I had moved on and was asking about a Jack Skelton and Sally purse, I happened to call my wife over to see it and I was asked to leave because he didnt like my additude. He was too racist to wait on 2 lesbians and requsted we leave his store and would not wait on us. At this point, I dont pay bigots anyway, just need others to know. I might have given this place 5 stars if the prices weren't so crazy. I know, you get what you pay for, but I walked out a poor man after my visit. The merchandise here is top notch and the selection is great. But what really sets them apart is the fact that you get help from folks who live the life. The guy who helped me has been playing music professionally since before I was born. He's picked out an outfit or two for himself. The woman who helped my wife was young, but you knew that she didn't just work here. Bonus points for not having something with 'New Orleans' or 'Who Dat?' all over it when nearly every other store within a mile only contains tourist trap crap in it. AVOID! AVOID! or at least double-check what is in the box they are handing you before you pay! I bought some shoes. After trying them on, the sales associate sold me a different box from the pair I tried on, and of course, there was a difference in color between the right and left foot shoe. I came back a first time to let her know I would return the shoes the next day. When I came back with the shoes, she first tried to take me to the back of the shop so the other clients would not hear our conversation. She then told me I had tried on the shoes. Well, of course I did! just not the same pair! There was 2 pairs of the model in the same size and she sold me the one with a problem! She refused to make an exchange. Such bad faith make it obvious that she purposefully took the other box of the same size to get rid of the problematic pair of shoes. Dishonest pure and simple! Terrible way to treat people but since they are dealing with tourists, they are sure to never see the same customer twice. I later checked the brand (L'Artiste") online, realized it was $20 less, and if there is a problem with an online purchase, you can return them! So I if you feel like entering this place, I recommend just checking the brand and size of whatever you are interested in to then buy it online, maybe at a cheaper cost, but at least you won't have to deal with a dishonest, unprofessional, young sales person who clearly despises you. read more

I passed on amazing stitched leather cowboy boots, and my husband passed on Beevus and Butthead Doc Martens. Not your typical Payless footwear... but far far better. I came with to NOLA with for a school trip. Absolutely beautiful clothes and shoes. I've always been drawn to this kind of fashion. we don't have stores like this where I'm from, so it was an instant hit of serotonin for me. However, HORRIBLE customer service. It was my idea to convince our chaperone to let us go in since we had extra time before we had to be back to our meeting spot. We went into the store and IMMEDIATELY I noticed that the atmosphere was uptight, stingy. Agaisnt my better judgement, I ignored this because I wanted to look at the cool platforms they had for sale. I made my way towards the back because a pair of platforms caught my eye. When I went to check the price tag, I noticed a couple workers just staring at me. I smiled at the employees, but they just looked at me with a dull face, with what I felt like was disdain. I don't know if it was because I wasn't dressed to look the part of someone who'd frequent that store, or if it was because I was a person of color. It was a diverse staff, but I didn't feel welcomed. I normally would feel happy supporting shops like these, but not shops that make me and my friends feel unwelcomed and uncomfortable. read more

This is not a normal shop. It's a miraculous shop! I had spent the morning calling about a dozen costume shops looking for a very specific item, without any luck. I had given up on my search and I was just out rambling around the Quarter when the window display at Road Kill caught my eye. I went inside, just to browse, and with no intention to buy anything. They have a wonderful selection of rockabilly clothes, as well as steampunk gear and some novelty items, too. Great selection of shoes and boots, as well! Anyway, I stepped inside and I was just gazing around, when the shop girl said, "Great jacket!" I was wearing my genuine DEVO windbreaker. Obviously, they have good taste at this place! I said "thank you, and you've got some great jackets in here, too. But I bet you don't have a gorilla suit." That's when Jack stood up behind the counter and said "yes, we do!" That was what I had been searching for all morning! Sure enough, he went in back and pulled one gorilla suit down off the wall! Needless to say, I bought it and left the shop a happy man. Awesome staff. Great store. I have been coming in here since literally my first day on my first visit to New Orleans. Where do I start? I guess with the staff. Nearly all of them have excellent taste in closthes/shoes/etc, as well as extensive knowledge of product lines and new merch. I was informed on Monday by a salesperson that vegan doc martens will be sold here soon! How awesome is it to know what is coming out before, so I can save up for it, and get it before anyone else in town?! The dresses are to die for here. Rockabilly dresses galore that are in many different sizes adorn the racks. Sailor dresses? Check. Pinup dresses? Got it. Sparkley sequin dresses? Got that too. The shoe selection is killer and super varied. Biker boots, sure, but I love the girly shoes and rain boots! Even the stuff on sale is stylish and adorable. I popped in the other day and noted the cute sock selection that has just popped up too! I'd recommend this place for costumes too. I always pop in here when I am in need of tights, makeup, or just that little extra accesory to make my costume pop! You won't have a problem finding an entire outfit from this place.
