This is how many of the autumn blooms Amherst has every fall. Add the uncountable loads of other flower and plants in spring and it's a Mecca for garden buffs. Calling a place a Mecca is cliche, old hat, probably overused on Yelp. But the metaphor absolutely fits this greenhouse. First they have five full acres under roof. Secondly, it will take a pilgrimage to get there, for it's way out in the rural plains south of Lima. Just go to the middle of nowhere, take a left to bum F Egypt, head towards the boondocks of the sticks, and you'll be halfway there. It is off the narrow Allen county road of Amherst in-between State route 196 and 117. In fact the biggest neg is the traffic jam on the undeveloped street that occurs in the spring when the highly popular greenhouse attracts gardeners from all over the state. Turning in its gravel lane showcases a lovely maintained house beside a sparkling pond and manicured flower patches. Towering above are the greenhouses that seems to go on endlessly. Here a abundant choices grow under what could be miles of sprinklers, and miles of piping with plotted plants hanging down. The selection is a eye-popping plane of annuals, perennials, and veggies. Shrubs, bushes, trees, and a few rustic wooden garden decor round out their Jupiter size enclosures. They are open seasonally: April until late spring/ summer. Then they open up again in the fall selling the previously mentioned mums with pumpkins, squashes, and gourds. Daily hours are limited: 9-5 Monday through Friday; 9-12 Saturday. A family biz, Amherst has an interesting origin story. In 2002, the family started a 10 X 20 greenhouse to grow flowers themselves. They ended up growing too many so they put a sign up by the driveway. Soon all the extra flowers were gone. In response to the demand they put up a larger greenhouse and sold 700 Chrysanthemums that fall. From then the business grew exponentially. It is an experience if you dig plants and are in the area.
