This theatre is perfectly located off of 84 and the prices are right! I love the reclining seats and they are always showing the latest movies I'm interested in. I must say I appreciate they are never over crowded and have plenty of snack options available. Staff is always friendly and I'm glad they have matinee shows too!

ORIGIN: Riverview Cinemas opened in 2017 as part of development of a large tree-filled parcel on Southbury's bustling Main Street. The theater is owned by the LaFlamme family. CONCEPT: Riverview Cinemas allows the suburban and rural communities in its vicinity access to a movie theater, without need to travel to the nearest city. Six theaters with relatively small number of seats (up to 150) support a quiet and non-crowded experience. EXPERIENCE: Besides being a close drive and devoid of crowds, Riverview Cinema has wide, thickly upholstered seats that can recline AND be warmed! The seats are positioned such that there is a wide space between rows, which ensures unobstructed views for all. Ticket prices are less than those encountered at national chains, adding to the local, family-owned theater's allure. If that isn't enough, a restaurant with bar (Mercato) is just steps away and frequently offers movie-themed cocktails -- making an easy and unique time out. LOCATION: The theater has ample parking and, unlike most movie theaters, has a sunlight-filled lobby that overlooks a river (Pomperaug River). It is easily accessible via two ramps off the 84 highway. TIPS: While Riverview Cinemas offers the traditional movie snacks, such as buckets of popcorn and cartons of candy, more nutritious options are available in a second concession area in the lobby.

The reason this is four stars and not five are the patrons. The theater itself is pretty nice - it's located on the end of Southbury and rather quiet, even though the parking lot always feels full. It looks new, has a nice film theme decorating the walls, and even though it sells Pepsi has well stocked snack bar. However, the seats are suspect. Some are clean, others have stuff left in the cup holders, the floor, and so gross, between the seats. Hopefully they do a deep clean at night but during the day, it seems to start to build up. The really easy solution is for patrons to grow up, not make a deliberate mess, and pick up after themselves. The seats at the end of the row I was in were relatively clean at the store of the movie. At the end, napkins and cups were on the seat. Popcorn all over the floor. Absolutely awful. Be better patrons!

    Very reasonably priced concession stand.

Nice small theater - doesn't feel overwhelming. Love the ability to buy online - easy to get to. Clean with a friendly staff.

Great except all the good seats have broken heaters. $13 for a movie. Limited snacks. Nice recliners just most are not heated.

Living in NYC,…read moregoing to a regular movie theater is a nightmare...people on their phones, talking, smoking cigarettes and weed, babies crying. I just stopped going since even Alamo stopped enforcing cell phone usage. But I really wanted to see "The Sheep Detectives" and I saw that there weren't too many seats sold for an early Friday show, so my husband and I visited here and it wasn't bad! I didn't order tickets in advance but used the kiosk when we walked in. I was also able to order food at the kiosk and then pick it up at the concession stand. Although every employee I saw there looks like they are in high school, the place seemed to be pretty well run. It was tidy, the soda/salt/napkins areas were organized and well stocked. The restrooms were a little outdated but they were clean and most everything worked. The theater was clean and the seats were in good shape....no obvious tears or sagging or anything. Sound and temperature were perfect. There were probably about a dozen other people in the theater and nobody used their phones or decided to have an in depth conversation. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised after reading some of the other reviews. I imagine if I saw a film that wasn't designed to attract old softies like me, my experience might have been different but I would go back here as long as it wasn't too crowded.

ORIGIN: Founded by Woodbury native James Wargo and opened in…read more2020, Hidden Gem Orchard is aptly named. LOCATION: Wargo leases land that is part of the Southbury Training School property, a campus that was once a fully self-sustaining community. I first came upon it on in 2020 on my way to the nearest highway, and was surprised to find activity in an otherwise abandoned-looking area of the vast property -- at height of a pandemic no less! The orchard is located behind some agricultural structures that reflect a more active past, and invite some interesting photo opportunities. CONCEPT: The founder of Hidden Gem Orchard, James Wargo, has expertise in soil management and crop production. Wargo works closely with esteemed Cornell University pomologist, Ian Merwin, PhD, to grow both new and antique varieties of apples. EXPERIENCE: As a result, a visit is like opening a treasure chest of uncommonly seen and tasted apples, such as Esopus Spitzenberg, a favorite of Thomas Jefferson. A visit to the orchard is tranquil, not a spectacle with crowds, music, and lines. The focus is growing and sharing a love for apples, rather than weekend entertainment. Pick your own in the orchard, or pick up at farm stand. TIP: "Imperfect" apples are available at discounted price. Look out for apple pastries prepared by local baker, Horsehill Provisions.
