The Riverside is a curate's egg.
The place is in a pretty spot next to the river and close to Caversham Bridge with some off-road parking.
I wandered past the bar and into the restaurant area and lurked, but nobody attempted to greet or to serve me. There were two groups of people in the restaurant, but it looked like a private function so I wondered if the restaurant was full. I wandered back to the bar, and after waiting to be served asked if I could dine in the restaurant. The waitress disappeared to check, then cam back and said that would be fine. I sat near the window and was given a menu to look at.
The service was slow and listless. I chose a glass of wine and a Tiger Prawn starter, followed by Kleftiko from the European -inspired menu which at least sounded interesting. Unfortunately it was about now that things started to go wrong.
There appeared to be the remains of at least on, possibly two, private functions still using the restaurant. One was a group of gentlemen, who were drinking and chatting quietly. The other group was more problematical. I'd guess it was a family celebration of some kind: but the problem was that there were a couple of young children, up to around 5 years old, and the parents decided that they would turn the restaurant into some kind of play group. Over the next 40 minutes I had to listen to the children screaming, laughing, and dashing round the restaurant playing tag. One of the adults decided it would be a good idea to bounce the two children up and down on his knees: the children obviously thought this was great fun and were screaming, laughing and giggling.
I tried scowling across the restaurant at the group concerned, but I think there view was they had paid for a private function and had paid to use the facilities, so if I didn't like it that was my problem. I felt I had paid to use the restaurant for a nice relaxed evening meal after a busy day's work.
Basically the restaurant staff should have stepped in and asked the kindergarten to calm down, but they didn't. As a result I wasn't in the best of moods. The food was fairly good, but it couldn't manage to survive the mediocre service and appalling ambience.
I'll give it 1* for service, 3* for food and 4* for location, so 3* overall is probably generous. I just hope I caught them on an off day read more
