BUT even more to say about this particular location (GolfTec Whitby) because of who is leading it, head instructor, Steve Rodriguez. Let's put to the side for a moment that he's obviously a pro and a guy that still plays the game competitively (which isn't always the case with teaching pros). That's not the magic. Steve is patient & encouraging, etc... good, but not magic. The #1 thing this guy does that makes GolfTec Whitby great is from the moment you meet, he puts you in a non-judgement zone so you can learn faster. Easier said than done because many of us judge ourselves. It doesn't matter your level, your good or bad shots, he's encouraging. He knows when to pull back on instruction and not put too much into your heard AND he genuinely gets excited when you really hit it; "Hello!!!" he can be heard saying... apparently he can talk to a golf ball, tell mine to stay out of the water. To say he helped me improve my swing and overall game significantly is an understatement. No... I'm not going on tour, but I hated the game I loved at times (sounds like some people's marriages). We started with a plan I didn't stick to - I didn't commit to the process. He literally pulled me aside and said, "Look, trust me on this. Don't worry about distance, don't worry about spin, I just want you to stop gripping the club so tightly. I don't want you just coming here going through the motions. If you need to take some time off, do so. But work with me here". In one lesson he even had me turn off tracer path because I kept looking at how far (well not far) the ball went. That's wisdom. That's the intangible. Fast forward the 2.5 years we've been together and the results speak for themselves; I'd brag how my 8 iron now carries ~154 and goes 162 and I take a 6 iron to carry 174 and roll 190 ...but I'd have to tell you how my 8 iron used carry 120 and I would (sorry for what's coming) shank the ball. Shank ... ugh ... the stuff that would make me want to quit more than ever. It's so rare now, but if it happens, I'm like, I know why, and I know what's wrong. But here's the other thing. At least for me, golf has its ups and downs. And there are times where I literally called him up and was done with golf, and other times where I call him up excited by the round in the 70s I shot! (Relax it's from 5600 yards with my 87 year old Dad.) So I guess he's kind of like a therapist ... lol ... more the point is that he cares. He's not there to sell you what you don't need and ring every dime that us golf-addicts are willing to pay; he is there so you can enjoy the game more, go out and do what golf should really be about - having fun. Here's the deal, technology and facilities can separate the probables from the possibles when it comes to choosing a place to invest your dollars trying to learn this damn hard sport... but the true calibre of instruction rests in the hands of the people entrusted to teach it. With GolfTec Whitby and Steve R ... you're in incredible hands. Rob, the other pro, is always so courteous and never sees you without asking how you're doing. When you're there practicing (which is an essential part of my package with the camera reviews), even though he's not my coach, I can ask him a question and he's there to help, not because it's his job per se, because he wants too. Overall, I would highly recommend GolfTec Whitby, and Steve Rodriguez as an amazing instructor for anyone looking to improve their golf game. Note: Now that you read this review... understand I don't often give reviews. Why? I have a social brand in the work I do (professional speaker & author & Fortune 100 VP) and some of my 'hobby' stuff has showed up on SQAIRZ golf and Alphard golf (makers of the Club Booster e-cart) despite not being an amazing golfer. The domes inside was significantly warmer, they also have a heater and will bring you a heated blanket. Lunch menu includes kids meal with paying adult which is nice. My hubby got gumbo and I got the braised short ribs. Both meal was great, a little on the saltier side. The kids had corn dog and Mac and cheese bites with fries, I also ordered their special hot chocolate for them. The service was great and we all really enjoyed the experience here. But I love to come to Bushwood whenever my friend ask me for play a round. The 9 hole executive course at Bushwood is just perfect for me!! My friend can still keep her insanity and we still friend after a round of playing. The grounds are well kept and the fairways and greens always in good condition. (gee I cannot blame the course for all those boogies!!) I usually go during morning have a quick game then we go for lunch, perfect girl's "day" out!! BTW, Bushwood also has another 18-hole Championship Course, maybe I should give it a try next season after more practice! .

Bunker Hill has created their own niche with a 12-hole par-3 course in Pickering like no other…read morepar-3 course I have ever seen. Pictures say a thousand words but they still don't do justice to this golf course. You have to play it to really appreciate how good Bunker Hill is. The layout, the scenery, the course conditions, the greens, and the views are all spectacular! The 360 degree view from the 12th tee, the tallest part of the course, is wonderful. How high? You're north of Hwy 7 and you can see Lake Ontario! The layout allows you to play every club in your bag, even the driver (unless you're a long hitter). Hole #12 plays 258 yards from the back tees! Only the best players will break par. Check it out. You'll love it.

It's a decent course that requires you to use a variety of clubs and would suit relatively intermediate golfers off the white without being crazy slow. The blue tees definitely offers a bigger challenge for the more advanced golfer and greatly increases the distance off the back nine. Tip: DO NOT PARK near the 10th tee near the trees. We watched golfer after golfer hook their valley tee off into the lot.

Cherry Downs Golf and Country Club has been around for a very long time, notoriously known for…read moreridiculously fast greens. Once private, it is now a public course under the ClubLink umbrella. There are LOTS of mature trees, creeks, and ponds, waiting to swallow your ball. Changes in elevation make club selection crucial. Hitting your approach shot past the hole could make your next shot very tricky. Don't let the Par 71, 6,026 yards fool you. All of these factors can bite you before you know it. On this occasion, I was co-hosting a small golf tournament (28 players), with dinner following in the restaurant. The weather was near-perfect, with just a little cloud cover to prevent us from getting burned. Despite a minor hiccup with registration at the beginning, the staff were very friendly and helpful. We got everything sorted out to everybody's satisfaction. Our starter, Michael, was great at pacing us off the first tee and giving everybody, especially first-timers, tips on where they should be aiming. Marshals checked with us several times during the round. After seeing the scores at the end of the round, it appears that not many people took Michael's advice. The scores were abnormally high, even from the players that have been here before. After golf, we had a nice BBQ dinner on the patio overlooking the 18th green. The menu included crudite, salads, burgers, sausages, and desserts. There was more than enough food for everybody and it tasted pretty good. I had arrived early, before the tournament, to have breakfast with my co-host and another friend. The breakfast portions are quite generous and the meals were prepared well. I'll be back (even if it's just to find all the balls I left out there)...

The city has…read morerecently sold off the back 9 of this course and it's now a 9 hole course, part of the east GTA Bruce's Golf Reward program. It's $25 including a cart which makes for fantastic value. The condition of the course was decent. I'm not a big fan of the layout as the pathways cross back and forth which causes for quite a bit of traffic on a few holes. Be careful where you park your car as the parking lot is only a few yards from hole #2's green! The set up on Hole #5, a 140ish par 3 over a valley, leaves only 5 yards to a low fence at the back of the green. Some folks are just plopping it over the fence to get a free lift. I tried to play it legit, but topped my ball into the valley, then pitching blind over the hill and over the fence anyways. Bah! Hole #8 is ridiculous. You have to carry 202 over a wide and sunken bunker on a par 3 where the clearing to the green is maybe 30 yards wide surrounded by forest. If you can't hit a ball long and straight, you're going to lose a few balls. I decided to take a 3 iron into the bunker and then try and blast out. Unless I'm getting a lot of wind, I'm not sure how I'd carry over the bunker and land on the green or drive the green with a wood and not roll through. Not the prettiest or fanciest place, but it's cheap and adequate. Hmmm kinda like my last date.
