Dined there for the first time last night while visiting family in the area. I had heard good things and was excited over the prospect of a good catfish dinner. Rivers Kuntry Katfish did not disappoint.
We split an onion blossom for an appetizer. It was a little overcooked but still quite tasty. I only wish they were served with comeback sauce or something similar rather than ranch sauce. A minor issue, however.
The sweet tea was divine. No need for additional sugar or sweeteners - it was just right. I lost track of how many glasses I gulped down over dinner.
The catfish was excellent. I've frequented Taylor Grocery, Jerry's, Middendorf's, Stogner's, Shaw's, etc. This was easily the best catfish I've had in years and is right up there with Jerry's and Middendorf's. I only hope it wasn't a fluke and can't wait for my next visit.
As for the hushpuppies, why are good - or even edible - hushpuppies hard to find? Are they that difficult to make? Though I've had better hushpuppies at Stogner's in Tylertown, the hushpuppies at Rivers Kuntry Katfish are pretty darn good. They're not dry or tasteless. I think they may use a bit of bell pepper as well as green onion in their hushpuppies, which give them a nice, unique flavor.
The french fries were nothing special, but who goes to a fish house for french fries? They have additional side options, including greens (which I'm anxious to try on a future visit).
If you can find the place, I wholeheartedly recommend it. I'm giving it four stars but will bump my rating up to five if it's as good on my next visit. read more
