Worst vacation of my life. Let me start by saying I have been a customer of River Run for at least the last 10 years and go there at least once a year- 4 1/2 hour drive from Sudbury. Have done everything from camping to renting cabins at least 5-6 times to bringing two families from Sweden and my own (12 people for rafting). I usually kayak the river alone or with friends. The service is most often rudimentary and adequate but the site and the Ottawa river are fantastic. Last year my wife and I booked a specific cabin dòwn by the water 3 months in advance as we had stayed in it previously and love this spot. When we arrived to River Run about 6 pm no one was to be found nor had any instructions been sent to us in any form outlining how we should get the key to our cabin- simple with today's technology one would think. Thinking the key may have been left in door we drove down-roughly a km. What we found was an unlocked cabin with unmade beds, overflowing garbage, the stink of sweat and still no one on site. As Wilderness Tours had taken over this property I called their office and luckily got ahold of someone-site security? They assured me someone would be along directly to clean the room. 3 hrs later and after many unanswered calls someone finally showed up and provided us with another cabin than we specifically booked. The evening was shot regarding any form of paddling, fishing and with much anger, disappointment, frustration, wasted time on our part we took this substitute. The next day we wasted more time finally moving to the cabin we had booked. We put it behind us as mixed signals, bad luck, whatever and had a great time paddling, fishing, being in and on the water.
Fast forward to this year. We again booked the same cabin about 3 months ago for 4 days 3 nights Aug 28-30. I spoke with the reservation person and informed them of our troubles last year and was guaranteed the cabin we rented would be ready and waiting for us on Aug. 28. Just to make sure I called twice the week before and then the day before our arrival and was guaranteed that the cabin would be ready on our arrival (this past Tuesday) and check in time was 4 pm. We arrived on Aug. 28 at 4 pm sharp for check in. I asked the young person working the gate house about breakfast only to be told as it was end of season and there were few customers breakfast was no longer available. Fair enough. In the next breath, however, she told me that she had had to rent our cabin out the night before for one night and was unsure if the cabin was empty, clean and that the key was not returned by the person renting the cabin. Stange that with many cabins empty as it was end of season ours had to be rented out. Confused and upset I pointed out that I had called repeatedly including the day before and was guaranteed our cabin would be available. Unhelpfully, she said she was not aware of this and bizarrely repeated her story 4 to 5 more times but offered no resolution. When asked how she would know if the cabin was clean or not she told us we would have to drive down to it then return to let her know! We did so- (of about 8 cabins only one was occupied). Our cabin was open, bed unmade. We returned to the gate and informed her of this. After asking to speak with her manager and told he would not be available that day or the next she finally called someone and said cleaning would be at the cabin in 10 minutes. I asked about the missing key and she told me she would provide s with two keys. I clarified for her that my concern was that a stranger would have a key to our cabin. She said "oh" and chuckled. At this point after driving 4 1/2 hr, discussing the matter with an uncaring and unhelpful person, checking if a cabin is cleaned or not we decided to get something to eat-no facilities are open at River Run including the sauna- and went to Whitewater Brewing. Thankfully, it was closed and after reflecting on the previous year's sham of cleaning coming "right away" we decided to drive to Wilderness Tours and lodge a complaint. After the 15 min. drive there, locating the office and a short wait I talked to two employees, Alex and Murph (hope I got those right) who are the only positive aspect of this sorry tale. I was so angry I could barely speak. Quickly, they assured me our room fee would be reimbursed, the room would be cleaned, and they gave us free meal vouchers- kudos to WT for having at least two great employees who did what they could do to remedy the situation and it is because of their 5 star service River Run gets one star instead of zero. Another employee in the office informed me the cabin had not been cleaned as it had not been registered as being rented! I'll leave the reader to surmise what this would point to. So, after eating and getting back to the cabin well after 7 we did little- wasted evening. Unfortunately, Alex and Murph could not reimburse the poor treatment and dissappointment. Didn't even take boats off truck and left a day early. read more
