Boardwalk Bar & Bistro was a favourite amongst our circle of friends, as a perfect spot for Friday after work drinks and a relaxed atmosphere for "quick & easy" food. So it was with great sadness when we heard it was closing down in February 2012; another victim of the slow economy & post-flood effects.
Not to worry though, as this favourite hang-out spot, has risen from the ashes to be re-incarnated as Matt Moran's latest offering, RiverBar & Kitchen.
We were here on a Tuesday night with a group of friends. We were told by the venue beforehand that no reservations would be required, and although Riverbar & Kitchen appeared to be busy, we had no problems finding a table outside. When the weather is perfect like it was on this night, there's no other way to experience the magnificent views of the river & story bridge, than to be outside. Besides, isn't it better to be seen and people watch? :)
Matt Moran & his team, have done a great job of re-inventing the site. There's a clear distinction between "inside" & "outside" with the 20m long bar inside extending outdoors, with a centrally located bar portion catering to guests who've chosen to go "alfresco". There seems to be more flair outside with the addition of yellow & white coloured beach umbrellas at the tables. Inside, there's the appearance of more space (being open-plan), and what looks like a nautical theme happening with the decor,(a large ship's rope as a light feature in the centre of the room). They've done well to capture the typical Queenslander lifestyle of the summer months, with the deckchairs, and VJ weatherboards.
Before getting onto the food, and as lovers of "espresso" and "long black", we'd heard of their single origin blend crafted brom Brazilian, Sumatran, Ethiopian and Indian beans. We promptly ordered to start our Riverbar & Kitchen experience. Coffee was good, not bitter, easy to drink but probably not as good as our favourite in Campos Coffee.
With food, Riverbar & Kitchen has a wide selection on offer, and have carefully targeted who their patrons would likely be. There's the "Bar Food", Pizza, & Salad, for those who want something easy and simple, and those who may be in a group, keen on "share" options. Then there's the "Mains", for those who want a regular restaurant experience. They also had Desserts, Sides, Coffee/Tea, as well as a selection of Cocktails. We would try the latter later!
We decided to order some items initially, from the "Bar Food" section, then added to this with Pizza, Dessert and a jug of Cocktails; it really is the festive season!
Our order as follows:
Seared Kingfish, ginger , ponzu, & miso
(something different, interesting flavours, sweet, tangy, sour, salty but delicious. probably our favourite dish of the night!)
Pulled Pork Bun, harrisa, lettuce,
(Not like a regular pork bun; imagine the "bun" being a soft-taco like shell. The pork was beautiful, covered in a spicy harissa sauce and lettuce. A great re-imaginging of pork bun, Yum!)
Bucket of Crispy Fried Chicken
(This was a bit of a let-down. For $20, not many pieces, maybe 4 -5, and some of the fried chicken, as tasty as they were, were a little pink in the inside)
Margherita & the Eggplant pizza
(the base was thin, and the flavours fresh. Not too oily and heavy, they hit the mark just right. One of the nicer pizzas we've had in recent times)
Dessert
Chocolate Mousse Cake, orange, peanuts
(What a beautiful, absolutely delicious dessert! Sweet? YES! but the combination of the chocolate, orange, & peanuts was perfect on the taste buds)
For fun times, we ordered a jug of Watermelon & Mint Caipirinha. At first the bar tender, didn't know how to make this, and had to refer to the printed instructions before proceeding to make this elixir of joy. Good value for $30, as there were several of us who managed to get a glass and a half each. A very refreshing and sweet drink, perfect for these summer nights!
Service throughout the night was attentive. Despite some confusion by several wait staff, regarding orders. At least they were always around to check up. Some of our neighbouring guests weren't so lucky as we noticed their impatience with their orders which had to be taken back a few times. These are just some teething problems that one would expect of a newly opened establishment.
Overall, Riverbar & Kitchen have done a great job of offering up something unique and different in their food options, a combination of classy yet relaxed. If Matt Moran was aiming to offer something above what Boardwalk bar & bistro was, but below what ARIA is, then Riverbar & Kitchen hits the mark perfectly. Its certainly going to become our new venue for after-work drinks, as well as a good spot for taking family & interstate visitors who want to experience magnificent views & soak in Brisbane's lifestyle without any pretentiousness. read more
