Like anything else in the world, pumpkins have origins. There was once a time in history when…read morepumpkins did not look and taste like how they do today. Native Americans were already growing pumpkins even before the Europeans arrived in the country. After their arrival, they also learned about this versatile plant and started adopting it. The Europeans used them as the main ingredient in various dishes and meals, including soups, stews, and the widely famous pumpkin pie. It's that time of year when one can't think of anything more quintessentially autumn than hopping on a hayride, cutting a fresh pumpkin from its stem, and bringing it home to carve, which is why my partner and I came this Saturday afternoon to Conklin Farm U Pick, located on the corner of Vreeland Avenue and River Road in Montville. Upon arrival, we were guided by the staff to their organized spacious parking lot. This much simpler, relaxed, family-run and operated farm offers a little bit of everything. The ground is a decent size for everyone, from regular and haunted hayrides and train rides to picking your own pumpkins at 85 cents a pound and the purchase of mini apple cider donuts, pies, and apple cider drinks. The crowds were manageable. There was an authentic pumpkin patch with vines and pumpkins attached to the earth! Parking and entrance were free with friendly staff, and the price was reasonable. We had a great time here and will definitely visit it again.

For instance, the haunted hay ride was $15 per person. The haunted hay ride wasn't too scary, and it was pretty fun, but it lasted less than 10 minutes. I think we spent more time waiting for the ride to begin than the ride itself. The folks who dressed up to scare us did a really great job and I hope they are compensated appropriately. It's nice that they offer a day time haunted hay ride which is pretty hard to find (we have looked extensively for my nephew who loves scary things). They should advertise this more. They have mini apple cider donuts for $7 and you get a dozen. These were so small and lacked flavor, it was disappointing because I dearly love apple cider donuts. I think because there wasn't much sugar on them. I was also going to get a small white pumpkin but Trader Joe's has them for cheaper. My nephew got a large pumpkin and I used a wheel barrow to push it around (only adults can use them). They weighed it for price and it was about $15. Again, I feel like we could have done better with the prices. This place is nice if you live close by and don't want to drive far. Staff were very nice and my nephew did have a good time. They have a regular hay ride which we didn't do, but looked fun! This place is perfect for the little ones as it's not too big. They do have a wide selection of different pumpkins including greens ones (which may be a gourd and not a pumpkin, but all the same). I was impressed by the variety. I don't know if I'll be back, but it was a nice treat for the day!

Since their animals come from farms that take care of them (better than most humans) they are on the pricier side. $15 for a pound of ground beef for example but trust me, its worth it!! Especially unfrozen if the option is available. We never bought delivery and always drove to the store. Duck, venison, chicken breast, bison, beef, steak and drum sticks were all great quality in our experience. Also purchased venison dog treats and dog food that we served to my sisters dog raw. It contained vegetables like carrot and peas that he finished in minutes... chow down. Again, it's pricey but reasonably so bc the meat is fed great, and are cared for than most places you buy meat from. I highly recommend if you want to really want to impress your guests for Thanksgiving dinner. Please take the drive though, I haven't seen good reviews for delivery since packages have been damaged. The butchers really know their meats and cuts, ask them any questions and I'm sure they'll know :) they've been really helpful in my experience. Military discount is accepted.

The renovated layout is a definite improvement, making it easy to navigate the spacious aisles. It's especially great for those big pre-holiday trips when you need a wide variety of items. It is a convenient option for most grocery needs, especially if you're not picky about produce or using the pickup service. Needed to grab a few things for dinner, and the holiday weekend. The staff is very helpful, plenty of parking. The prices are average, but they do have excellent sales!

The last time I shopped here I was falsely accused of shoplifting while using self checkout by the self checkout attendant (Samir) even though I paid for the item! The whole experience was humiliating and awful to the point I will never return back to this store! The way I was approached by the self checkout attendant and treated like a criminal in front of other customers was disgusting and straight up disrespectful! I've been a loyal customer of this particular location for years however this incident has made me seriously question whether I feel safe or welcome to shop here anymore. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and this experience was the exact opposite of that. I hope ShopRite takes this kind of situation seriously and implements better training and protocols to ensure no one else has to go through what I did.
