Affordable and well-run, even on a low-occupancy Monday. They even provided free firewood at the tent site. Be sure to check out their cabins. They look really cute and comfy. Only downside, tenting, is that due to Hwy 6 construction, lots of detour traffic goes right by Red Rider. Kinda noisy, but didn't disturb my sleep after 7 hours pounding the Cuyuna Bike Trails!

My husband reserved a cabin here over a month in advance (we have to plan anything well ahead of…read moretime because of a complicated parenting schedule for his older kids, and a problematic ex-wife). Today, the day before we were to drive up and check in for our week-long cabin vacation, a man at the resort called and cancelled our reservation. My husband said the reason given was storm damage. I called the resort to gather more details--I wondered if perhaps the storm damage may have affected features of the resort we weren't planning to take advantage of. I didn't think it would hurt to double-check. The man on the phone was needlessly aggressive and excessively rude and disrespectful to me. It turned out that the real reason they cancelled our reservation was that we were supposed to have mailed in a deposit, in the form of a check, to hold our place. He claimed that he'd tried to call many times to ask for the deposit (IF that is true, he never left a voicemail). I offered to pay over the phone or via PayPal, but this business apparently exists in the dark ages; in addition to avoiding voicemail technology, they don't accept credit cards or payments over the internet--only checks or cash. So I assured the man that we could pay the full amount in person when we arrived, to which he rudely retorted with "Well why should I believe you? You're untrustworthy. You probably won't even show up." I assured him that we had planned our entire summer around this trip, that my husband and I are people of our word; it was our first time renting a cabin, we didn't have all the information necessary, and we would have sent the payment if we'd been properly informed. He continued to be rude and needlessly attack my character. I calmly told him that I would call my husband and see if he wanted to speak with the resort owner himself. He said he was glad to get off the phone with me because there were some "real, paying, GOOD customers there [he] wanted to talk to instead." I then called my husband, who said he'd never spoken with the man or received phone calls or voicemails about a deposit problem. My husband revealed that he'd just talked to a woman at the resort on Sunday (5 days ago). He isn't naturally a detail-oriented person, so when he realized he'd forgotten to send in the deposit, he called to apologize and assure her we still planned to come. The woman told him that up until he called, they had been considering canceling our reservation, but because my husband called to explain, she said that was confirmation enough and agreed to let us pay upon our arrival at the resort. Now we have to scramble to figure out what to do with the coming week--a week that my husband and I both requested off from work (I don't get paid time off, so I've forfeited a week's pay for this!). Will any other resorts have affordable cabins available at the last minute to accommodate 8 people for a week? I doubt it. This was our only opportunity to go somewhere special with my husband's older children this summer, and the man at Sunset Bay Resort in Aitkin, Minnesota, has ruined it by being 100% unwilling to be flexible or understanding, and adjust for his own failure to communicate with his female colleague. I called him back to let him know that my husband HAD been in communication with the woman at the resort, and she had said the amended plan to pay upon arrival was fine...but because the man had been so rude and disrespectful to me over the phone, we will never give them our business. I recommend all prospective customers do the same.

They also have free bike rentals, a great sand volleyball court, horseshoes, basketball, tennis and pickle ball. And if the lake is warm enough, there is a waterslide in the lake which looked fun. We were here Memorial Day weekend, and the weather was beautiful our first day, so we took out the paddleboards, and that was fun. The weather got chilly quickly, so I didn't have the opportunity to try the rest of the amenities. The pool is currently closed for construction. (There is a nice pool at the YMCA in Grand Rapids which we used one day for a $10 day pass). We stayed in a two bedroom lakefront cabin which was nice, but fairly rustic, and one of the bedrooms had absolutely no storage, (no closet, shelves or dresser). Next time, I think we would stay in the lodge rooms, which are a bit more upscale, with fireplaces, full kitchens, Jacuzzi tub and nicer furnishings. They have a restaurant/bar on site with a an outdoor patio and nice view of the lake, which is convenient. They also have free coffee and muffins in the morning at the front desk and at Otis's.The staff and management were incredibly helpful, friendly and accommodating. I definitely recommend, and look forward to coming here again, hopefully when the weather is a little warmer!

Great family resort -…read more My family started staying here in 1940. We have seen a lot of changes - all good. 6 generations of memories. Lakeside cabins are traditional cabins filled with up north charm. The lake shore has a great beach for kids and a large dock for adults to sit and talk, enjoy the sun and be able to keep an eye on the kiddos. Boat rental is available or bring your own boat. The Rave and swim raft are great additions to swim out to and get away from others on the main dock. Paddle boats, paddle boards, kayaks and a canoe are also available to resort guests. A play ground, game room and a small general store round out the resort amenities. We wouldn't stay any where else.

On appearance it is a very cute little motel. We checked in with another couple around 3PM. We were given room #108, which had new carpet. You could tell the beds were older and the rest of the room could use an update. We left for the party around 4:30 PM, got back to the Ripple River Motel about 9:15 PM. Crawled into bed about 9:30 PM and made a phone call to our daughter. With the light from my cell phone I happened to catch a bug crawling on my pillow case. When I smashed the bug it was full of blood. It was big enough to see. When we jumped out of the bed and turned the lights on the bed had at least 50 bugs we could see. I took pictures and called the front desk to let them know the bed was infested. We also told her we would be checking out, as would the other couple (3 1/2 Hour drive back home). The front desk manager refunded our money immediately. She also apologized up and down. She told us to come back in a month and the room would be perfect. We have thrown away our luggage & clothes. BEWARE!!
