We stayed here Memorial Day weekend 2018. This was our first time here and we loved it. The kids, ages 11 And 12 met new friends and played all weekend with them, jumping in the river, manhunt/hide and seek at night, great memories! It was a busy and packed weekend of campers, all river-side sites were sold out but it so much fun being right on the river. Make reservations early-on to ensure riverside! We brought some tubes and went down the river several times. Kids swung from tree ropes/swings into river too! Staff was amazing, brought us down more wood and ice if we called for more and $ was extremely reasonable priced for wood and ice, not over charged a bit. We will be back again! We brought our 3 large dogs, no issues. Keep tied up and under control. No breed restrictions, everyone and their dogs behaved! I would rate 5 stars if there were public restrooms. I know this is a biggie for some people. No running water for showers, sinks or anything, just PortaJohns but they were clean! Bring an Xtra roll of Tp in case. As long as you are ok with that it's a good campground, on the river and for kids that can keep themselves entertainedor busy! Some nights the music could be loud from fellow campers but they tell folks that by midnight is "quiet-time". #Great time had by us all read more

Don't go unless you don't want to/plan to sleep. No exaggeration, concert level speakers on at least half a dozen sites, fireworks, and full city lights. The music is non-stop, the latest of which STARTED at 0130 (am) and literally continued all night, FULL BLAST. No amount of earplugs would make a dent. Quiet hours not enforced at all, which I found out later is because most of the campground is full of folks who come every weekend, so if you're getting $20+ thousand a weekend with your regulars, why try to cater to anyone else? If your version of camping is a few hours of quiet time, neighbors who respect others, and a staff who cares, this is not your place. It is a party town, and if you complain, you are subject to highbeam lights into your tent the rest of the night along with even louder music. read more

This place could be so much better if the management regulated who comes in and what they do. The porta potties were clean. The river is scenic and nice. The grass was cut and maintained. I camp often and this place could be really nice. The music is blaring until 3 am, not just one campsite either. Some people had DJ speakers on tripods and started the Spanish Music at 7:50 am. Go somewhere else. It's not worth the trip here and the KOA down the street has to be quieter. The check in process was handing them $30. NO ID,NO RULES,NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Beautiful scenery, the river water is amazing but.... The amount of tents they cram into one campground is overwhelming. There are people blasting music all day and night. And once they turn off their music around 2am all you hear are the loud generators running. Forget peace and quiet or the natural sounds of the woods. Dont even bother using the toilets. DISGUSTING! They were dirty and even had blood all over the floor, sides, and door. Oh and garbage all over the campsites. No one throws out their trash! read more

Stayed there thinking it was a nice place since it was by the river. Paid for two nights, only stayed one night .. why you might ask? Because I was forced to sleep in my truck due to the excessive Latino music blasting for nearby campers all the way till 3am. It was literally blaring into my skull how loud and obnoxious they were being. Wasn't regulated what so ever and was so very disappointed by management and permanent party. I was here with a group that comes to River Run every year for a long weekend of camping and kayaking, but this was my first time joining them. It's a very primitive campsite, no electricity or plumbing so if you just MUST have a shower or bathroom, forget it. They do have port-a-potties that are pretty well maintained, so at least you don't have to go find a tree. Our group had a large site right by the water, but all of the "sites" are basically just a big open field, there aren't really any markers or dividers. When we pulled up to the entrance, there is a small shack with a stop sign on it, but the door was open and nobody was around so we went on it (which is apparently exactly what they expect you to do). The owners came by and settled up with us later, so it all worked out. So with all that said, I have no problem with it being a primitive campsite, and have no real complaints at all with the site itself. What I did have an issue with was the noise. There are quiet hours posted beginning at 10pm. But this was completely ignored by the other campers around us, with loud music playing well until the wee hours of the morning. Additionally, they had brought several large generators which were VERY loud, and ran all....day.....long. It really distracts from the peace and quiet that you expect when you go camping. When the owners came around to deliver firewood, we mentioned the noise to them but were told that the other campers are frequent customers and they don't want to upset them, so they wouldn't say anything to them. So basically, the quiet hours are irrelevant. If you want to sleep, bring ear plugs. If you want to enjoy peace and quiet, make sure your neighbors aren't running generators and if they are, ask for a different site. I don't know if you'll get one that's any better, but at least you can ask. read more

Chiming in with other reviewers, while the view and location is great if you have the riverside campsite, the noise and lack of enforcement is a problem. We had a group of very loud and reckless people next to us who partied until 3am and wouldn't be quiet after we asked them to. The camp manager did come around every now and then but was not strict with enforcement as we had requested the next day after our bad experience. This would be a fine campsite if no one else was there as the campsites are literally on top of each other. Also if you don't mind potentially be surrounded by people flying confederate flags and yelling obscenities then it would be OK for you. The price was also 30 per night per car which seemed expensive considering how limited the sites are, how small and lack of real bathroom. Look elsewhere. 2 stars. read more

We stayed here for 2 nights. Unless you get the campground right next to the river i.e. NOT the second row ...it isn't worth it. There are absolutely no trees from the second row onwards and the sun was beating down on us. Sun sets really late so it was exhausting. Did not enjoy at all. Also there was a large family which played music till about 3 and the whole campground was awake because of that family. Toilets are porter pottys. Super dirty.And no showers. Shame on us for ignoring the reviews; we thought we'd try it for ourselves. Beautiful place but unfortunately, we will not be back. The owners DO NOT CARE about the campers except to collect your nightly fee and there are NO refunds! No one ever came around to enforce anything. The campground next to us stuck a 'private' sign on the port-a-potty and then proceeded to block the door, dogs off leash, firecrackers (which set out dogs off) and EXTREMELY LOUD music! The owners knew about it when someone else complained and expressed that they are their all the time and they will be better...um, no! They opened up all of the doors on all the cars and played the music as loud as they could... awful! Please heed this warning ; you will not enjoy your camping experience, go elsewhere. read more

Enjoyed my time here for memorial weekend. My campsite was #28, right in front of the river. The view is beautiful. The weather was nice but not nice enough to go swimming in the river. It rained a couple of days before arrival, so the tides were high. Jeremy was a great host. He drives by every so often to see if anyone needs fire wood. There are Porter Johns almost at every campsite. They are clean so that's a plus. I love the fact how the campgrounds are dog friendly. The only down side was I came with 22 people and only had one campsite. Next time I will reserve two sites for more space. We will definitely make another trip back before the summer ends :) read more

Really pretty scenery by the river... $30 a car, and $5 for an arm load of wood. However, all of the plots are side by side so there is no privacy at all. It ends up being a camp city where you are all on top of each other. Lots of people playing loud Mexican music until 2am (regardless of the sign) and then starting back up at 6:30am. Generators were running all night and lights shining so there is no real darkness. There are train tracks nearby so you could hear the train rolling by at night as well. There's trash all over the site that seems to have accumulated throughout time. The portable toilets are super dirty. I went inside one that had blood all over the floor and sides. Strangest camping experience I've ever had. If you want a peaceful, quiet camping trip, do not come here. read more

Took my boys for a Saturday overnight trip to River Run. Jeremy is the guy who appears to run the place. He is very nice and hospitable. Overall our experience was a negative one because of the excessive noise. quick run down of good and bad Good - we had a river front site and it was great. Right on the river. Watched kayakers all day. Very relaxing. - relaxed and friendly staff - clean port-o-johns and plenty of them - Jeremy delivers firewood. charges 5$ for a huge stack. great deal. Bad -Noise. music blaring on loud speakers until midnight. forget sleep and falling asleep with the gentle sounds of the river. not going to happen here. - once the music went off, then we had a very loud generator to listen to for the rest of the night. The campground has beautiful views, friendly staff, and is well maintained. But the unrelenting loud noise was a huge disappointment for us. If you are coming to just party with a bunch of people and camp too, this your place. If its to enjoy the serenity of nature, you may not find that. read more

The campground owners didn't accomplish anything either. At 3:30am with music still blaring we packed up and made the 3 hour drive home. Ruined our weekend. Avoid it like the plague. Don't come here if you want to sleep! Loud music until 3am and then starting again at 7am. People coming in at 2am using their headlights to put up tents and then make food, all while having loud conversations. Quiet time is not enforced. It's a shame because it should be a pretty spot on the river. read more

Stayed here after hiking Old Rag. DO NOT STAY HERE. If I could give 0 stars I would. My friend describes the experience as, "transporting to a weird alternate dimension hellscape." All of the people staying along the river stay there every weekend. Blasting (really blasting) music (particularly South American polka) from multiple sources. A literal cacophony of sounds. They also said no to turning it down. Every campsite near ours was confused why management wasn't doing anything. We were so tired and it was impossible to sleep even if you can sleep through loud noises. At one point, someone crashed their truck into a tree on their campsite. At another point, a group of people almost got into a fight. Even after they conceded and turned the music low enough to fall asleep, they whooped and chanted and screamed into the night. If you have the choice between sleeping here or on the side of the road, the side of the road will be more peaceful. read more

We wanted to go camping for the Columbus Day weekend and went to Shenandoah hoping to get one of the walk-up sites, which we didn't. In a desperate (with limited LTE service in the mountains) search, we found River Run Campground on Google. Called and spoke to Jeremy. He is GREAT. Super kind and helpful. And all three stars on this review would be for him. Now the camping site, we got site #3-5 which is sort of in the corner of the river. My negative review starts here. 1. Because the sites are right on the side corner of the river, aka stagnant water, we had wayyyyy too many mosquitoes. Fine, we're here camping. 2. Just portable potties. No shower. Fine, we're here camping. 3. We had real difficult time trying to find a flat space to put our tent up. Fine, we're here camping. 4. Some camping sites (#3, and 4) barely had any shades so we were under direct heat. 5. Some people were obnoxiously yelling and playing music really really loud until 2am. Seriously, there seemed to be absolutely no enforcement of the quiet hours. Where were you Jeremy. :P that was by far the worst part of the experience. Fine with mosquitoes, no water source, no shower, no flat land. But neighbors (that are right next to you) sooo loud and obnoxious? No no. If you have river-related things to do, like canoeing or paddling, it could potentially be a fun place. For us who wanted to hike and be with nature, it wasn't much for us. Maybe we will go back after carefully planning some river sports. But all because Jeremy was uber nice. read more

Definitely a no-frills type place, but everyone that we encountered was nice and helpful. Music was played pretty loudly during the day and evening, but thankfully everyone obeyed the quiet hours. The riverfront tent sites are long and skinny, so you are pretty close to your neighbors. Jeremy came by multiple times and asked if we needed firewood or ice. The port-a-pottys were clean. Here's my personal experience: Pros- I went this weekend to this place. The owner and staff were awesome & helpful. We paid $40 for our own porta potty which is amazing. Our space was beautiful (view and location itself). We def recommend when reserving your space, you get Lot 1 (away from the crowd). Cons- When I think of camping, I think of nature. Decent volume of music, s'mores during night time, and bonfire. I think it was super ridiculous the amount of loud music and screaming of the people. I'm Hispanic and I enjoy going to places. This was beyond what I expected. We had 4 kids who slept until 1AM because of the loud noises. People were fishing with lamps in the river at 2AM which scared the living crap out of us. No security what so ever which is an important part of camping since we had kids. I think they should set some type of regulation for the noise. We had a generator go off until 12AM (it ran out) which was not okay. We love camping but I think they should be stricter on certain things. I've gone camping & the latest you have music is 10-11PM. The staff goes out to check on everyone with lamps to see if everything is okay (some recommendations). read more

This was our third time to camp at River Run. Each time has been a wonderful experience. Access to the Shenandoah is perfect, as most of the campsites are directly on the river. The campsites on the river are shaded and adequate in size. Jeremy, the owner, is an excellent host. he checked on us several times, and accommodated several requests we had - more ice, and a tank of propane (which we had forgotten to pack). We had a local river outfitter (Downriver Outfitters) bring kayaks to our site, and they picked them up at the end of our stay. The campgrounds are clean, with trash bins and porta-potties on site. We always go during the week when we camp and usually have the entire place to ourselves, which is really nice... and quiet. We have been told that weekends are a different matter, with large groups arriving in mass, lots of noise and loud music. That's a shame, as the campground is a beautiful and peaceful place. Where it not for the crowd and noise factor on weekends, my rating would be five stars! read more

Let me just say that I am not a camper but went along to celebrate my nieces Birthday and boy was I pleasantly surprised. This is a family own campground and a very well kept facility. They were so attentive and really made sure that you had everything you needed, from Ice, toilet paper, tubes and kayaks. The land is beautiful and it is right on the water.
