Nice campground outside of Luray. RV sites are spacious and fairly level. There are trails, a small playground, and it is on the Shenandoah River. It's a little pricey, especially when the weather is bad and you can't enjoy the river for fishing, tubing, etc. It's rather quiet, although quite full at the same time. The cabins appear to be extremely nice and a good price if a group of 8 were meeting up for a weekend. They had a full kitchen and bath and even a hot tub. The camp store had the essentials and the staff was friendly. Outlanders would definitely be a good home base for those wanting to explore the Valley during the day and return to the campground for a peaceful evening. read more

Beautiful well kept clean campground. We are 1st time RVers and I was worried about camping on gravel but our campsite is very level and we didn't even need to use our leveling blocks. We drove in late at night in the dark but it was very easy to find our site after downloading the campground map from their website. Site #15 read more

This was such a fun trip for a novice such as myself. There are public bathrooms for those who need it. It's clean and very spacey. It's pretty flat and there are a few trails. We went canoeing and really enjoyed ourselves. Everyone was really friendly. It's a beautiful sight to see. read more

This place is located near Luray Caverns and endless locations to tub, kayaking, horseback riding, ATV, hike, bird watch, etc. The customer service and quick checkin was great the entire time we were there everyone was nice. We arrived on a Wednesday stayed for several days. We did the platform that was right near bathhouse and tucked away from everyone. We will definitely go back, everything was clean and rules weren't an issue everyone respected them. Midweek was great most RV's arrive on Friday but al were quiet. The ladies room was clean, men's room I heard wasn't very clean. read more

Love, Love, Love this campground! We just got home from what I hope will be many more stays with Outlanders. We were very fortunate that our family of 4 and a party of several families were the only ones camping in the main tent area - our time was quiet and peaceful. There were several RV's and a couple folks down by the river - but even so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. We arrived too late to make use of the Camp Store, this was our first time here and we didn't take note of the hours. We stayed in an electric site, and the area is void of afternoon shade. If you have portable shade, bring it with you! The tent sites were situated on well manicured grass and were huge. Our littles loved the playground and I enjoyed the tall platform - I did some birdwatching and caught both the sunset and sunrise from it. My boys and I hiked one of the trails and found the safety rope down a certain slippery spot to be very fun. We accessed the beach in two places, both were fairly level and offered some water suitable for a 4 and 7 year old to splash around in. We highly recommend this campground. The only drawback was the 2pm check in time. read more

This is a lovely 5 year old campground. The friendly owners obviously want to make this a great experience for their campers. We camped here in a motorhome, and everything worked great. No wi-fi yet, but it is in the planning stages. Acres of property with the Shenandoah River meandering along the edge. Lots of mowed paths for walking amid meadows and woods. They have many tent sites, some right on the river bank and amenities for tenters are wonderful. We highly recommend it and will come again soon. read more

Amazing! Tubing down the river, hiking trails, clean bathrooms and showers. This has just become our go to camp site when we visit Luray.

The campgrounds are well maintained and the staff is very friendly. The little store is well stocked and has anything you'd need should you forget any of the essentials. We stayed on a platform site, which was nicely set up with a picnic table, fire ring and grill and even a place to hang your lantern and a railing to dry your wet clothes after a day swimming in the river. It was a little close to the Hog Pen sites, which were full, so there wasn't much privacy. All the campers were nice - lots of families - but as a couple w/out kids we would've preferred to be a little more nestled into the woods. The property is right along the beautiful Shenandoah and there are lots of spots for swimming, canoeing, tubing, etc. The primitive sites down by the river are well maintained but close together without any natural or other barriers. We thought it would be a great spot to go with a group so you could get several spots together. There is a steep grade, however, and you have to be prepared to walk up the hill for the bathroom and water. The bathrooms were a bit stuffy due to lack of ventilation. The women's room was better maintained than the men's during our stay. The location is close to the Luray Caverns which are not to miss! A highlight of our trip for sure. read more

We come here every Columbus weekend for Fall camping. We love the campsite and the whole property. They are very strict with noise but also not unreasonable. It's always a big group of us 10-12 people. We usually do wineries nearby, take a long walk on the property and go fishing. read more

What a beautiful campground. RV sites were spacious, and even though all the sites were booked, you felt like you were the only people in the campground. Super clean, and well maintained grounds. The kids loved that there were several access points to the river to swim/tube. The flies were a little unbearable, but it's part of nature. We will just bring extra fly repellant next time. Stayed a few nights hereto explore the area. Good location and easy to navigate. After hours checkin was accommodating besides the site numbers we not visible. Staff and faculty appeared to absent during the weekend. Grounds were neatly groomed. Borders the Shenandoah River with riverfront access. RV sites are all gravel, level with full hook ups NO cable TV. Verizon wireless service was good. Very quiet and dark at night with limited lighting. We camped in a Motorhome and would return again. read more

The campground is clean and well-maintained, well situated on the river. The bathhouse is adequate, but with only three sinks, three toilets and three showers, it gets very crowded even with only a few overnight tents. The tent camp sites are very close together, which largely negates the "get away in nature" idea of camping. Only the "primitive" tent sites are near the river, and are separated from the rest of the campground by a very steep bank. They management will tell you there are no cars allowed there, and that it is a 60 yard or more walk, but they failed to mention the steep grade of the walk. They provide a wheel barrel, but getting down the steep trail with a heavy load is tough. The other way up the hill is a poorly constructed steep foot trail. The water pump in the primitive sites didn't work when we were there, requiring a hike up the steep train any time we wanted to use the bathroom or get water. read more

My top two reasons to go camping are to talk with friends/family around the campfire and to lay in my hammock and I couldn't do either of those here. Quiet hours started at 10 like most places but the primitive campsites were so on top of each other that somebody fussed at us for talking at 11:30 when we were already trying to be considerate of everybody else. We literally had to spend the night whispering to each other. I've never had that problem at any other campground. We were also forced to take down our eno hammocks so we wouldn't "kill the trees." read more

What a great campground! Possibly our favorite one yet! We tent camped on an electric site, which was clean and set up nicely. The site itself was roomy and had little fences to lay our wet things over. The fire ring had been cleaned before we got there, which was nice not having someone else's leftovers there. Immediately when we pulled in, the place was so sweet and clean looking. It's not an overly crowded campground. There are primitive sites, electric sites and RV/camper sites. All of which were maintained nicely. They have all the trails mowed or cleared for easy passage. The bathroom was clean and nicely set up. They even have a ladder and gazebo at the end of the river "trail", for easy exit. Absolutely amazing place. We will definitely be back! read more

My family and I camped at this campground this past weekend. The campground itself was ok, it was decently clean in the restrooms and all. If you camp in the primitive sites, prepare to carry everything you need at camp down a pretty steep hill which can be slippery with rocks and stuff. Those sites are also quite close to each other. My real issue here, and the reason for 2 stars is because of a phone call I received while we were headed out apple picking away from the camp. The manager called and said she had received a complaint about my child waking up and crying in the middle of the night during "quiet time". She basically asked if I can keep them quiet at night. Seriously?! He's 2 years old and has severe eczema and wakes up itching like crazy. He woke up 2 times and each time we had him calmed down within I'd say 3 minutes and back asleep. Apparently the complainers has gone there for their 1st anniversary and were returning for a romantic getaway. At a family campground you're going to complain when a child wakes up at night for a few minutes?!! So those people were unbelievable, but the fact that the manager called me while we were out to pass on the complaint was what sent me through the roof. She should have told those campers that kids wake up sometimes and to get over it. If you have kids I would not take them to this campground. We will not be returning to this campground. read more

I had made reservations to stay at this campground for 3 nights on Sept. 16--18, 2016 with my brother. I was shocked to see this "campground". I have been camping for over 40 years and this campground is probably the biggest disappointment in camping I have ever experienced. This facility is literally an open field that was sectioned off from a corn field and sits close to the majestic Shanandoah National Park. If I had seen any pictures of this campground out in the open I would never have made reservations here. I strongly feel the campground owners are disgraceful for even calling their former cornfield a campground. No wonder they require full payment up front with no refunds. If you are looking for a campgroung near Luray, Virginia, don't waste your money or your time staying at Outlanders Campground. You would be better off camping in a Walmart parking lot. read more

Great campground! If you want to party all night, this is not your campground. Once 10pm rolls around it is quiet time and quiet time is enforced. If not for the peepers, you could hear a pin drop after 11pm. Wonderful place for families. Swimming, kayaking, fishing, hiking. You name it and you can do it here. We stayed in the "hog pens" which are tent sites that are sectioned off with split rail fence and right beside the bath house on the upper campground. The primitive sites are down on the lower campground beside the river. if you are staying on the primitive sites, you have to park your car on the upper campground and carry your stuff down to the sites. They also provide hand carts or you can rent a golf cart for $55 per day. Firewood is available at the front office for around $5 per small bundle. That's a ripoff like all other campgrounds who use the DNR's "we advise not to bring your own firewood to stop the spread invasive species of insects" bullshit to gouge campers for firewood. Par for the course these days. The bath house is centrally located and has three showers, two urinals and two stalls (at least on the men's side). Showers are roomy and the bathroom was reasonably clean for the weekend. Overall, it seems like a well run, kept up campground where you can relax and have a good time. read more

I can't think of what would have made our experience at Outlanders River Camp better - this campground is pristine and gorgeous. The primitive river-side camp sites are wooded and lovely. From the rest of the sites, you can gaze at the stars and the Blue Ridge on the horizon. The facilities are top notch and extremely clean. We had absolutely no complaints and a fantastic time. The hike down to the river-side spots is steep. I'll bet if you asked staff for assistance getting gear down/up, they'd be happy to help. read more

My experience at Outlanders was everything a night of camping should be. My friends and I were the only campers there that night, so we got full reign of the place. We camped literally 15 feet from the Shenandoah river. We enjoyed a beautiful Summer evening under the shade, and then later under the stars. The service was great and friendly, the grounds were well-maintained and had a lot of charm. And did I mention the bathrooms were the best I've ever encountered at a camp site? We absolutely loooooooved our stay at Outlanders River Camp!! The location couldn't be better. It's easy to get to, and is close to Luray in case you need anything. There are primitive tent sites both along the river and up near the bath house, as well as a few tent sites with electric power. Then there are some great RV sites out in the field area. We came as a large group (~40) over Labor Day Weekend, and rented the majority of the "Hog Pen" primitive tent sites. Fortunately we were able to get all the sites side by side, and could spend the evening by one or more campfires (in the nice fire ring/BBQ pits). The camp ground is very well maintained and patrolled by a gentleman named Kelly. He was one of the nicest people I've ever met. We could always strike up a conversation with him, and he'd give us all sorts of local information (i.e. where to put in and take out canoes, fishing advice, etc.). On the topic of staff, I'd also like to thank Angela and Lara in the front office for working with us on reservations, and check in. They were great! The bath house was perfect. Nothing too fancy, and just about the right amount of facilities (3 showers, 2 toilets, 2 urinals on the men's side and 3 toilets and 3 showers on the woman's). Like I said we were there over a holiday weekend and the campground was full (except for a few RV sites). Even in the morning and evening you could get in and out without having to wait. The only downfall (which doesn't matter much to me) was that the hot water didn't last long in the evening when all of us tenters were showering. It wasn't freezing cold, just not hot. We were able to canoe each day putting in at the 340 bridge, or the public boat landing just up river from there. From the landing at a drift we were able to make it back to camp in about 5-6 hours. From the bridge about 4. There's some small class II rapids through there that are a blast. Just enough to splash you a bit when going through. Even the kids did them in small kayaks. We had mixed ages with us during our stay. From 5-75 and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Quiet hour is strictly enforced which is a good thing. The wild groups seem to stay away and go to other campgrounds further down river. So we could all get some much needed rest at night. There's a small playground sort of area that the kids like to go to. However, it needs just a little more added to it if this camp ground is going to really appeal to families. We will definitely be back next year, and hopefully a few times between now and then. read more

This is a very well-kept campground. The view of the mountains is beautiful, but the river is just OK. The "beach" is just a dirty shore. Not much to it. My biggest issue though was that there wasn't much shade over the campsites. It's more of an open layout with lots of grass. Pretty though. The staff was very nice and the store has pretty much anything you will need while you're there. read more

This is a great campground. We stayed at the primitive sites near the river and the kids played in the river most of the time we were there. The river sites are well shaded. The sites up top are more open and have electricity and parking. Parking for the river sites is at the top of a hill and there are wheelbarrows available to move your stuff down. Bathrooms are also up top, but not so far away that the kids couldn't easily make it on their own. The whole place is very well maintained. The only down side is that some of the sites are very close together. read more

We stayed in a electric camp site which was great! Being my first time here, we will definitely take advantage of the primitive/river tent sites that offer great shade and cool breeze next time! Bring shade if you can for the electric sites. The site itself was well manicured and was close to trails and the river.Having tubing an option during your stay was fun. Only suggestion would be that they offer tube rentals... purchasing $40 worth of tubes for my husband and I that we likely won't utilize in the near future was the only downfall of the trip. read more

I have to give this place props. We ended up here after planning a trip to the Shenandoah Nat'l Park and it closed due to the gov't shutdown. I'd say it was fortuitous. A very nicely maintained camp with very friendly and helpful staff. We stayed on one of the "platform" sites, a close walk to the bathhouse. Everything was very well maintained, and the platform site was greatly appreciated during our stay in the rain. All sites, regardless of type, are close to the river for water activities. This campgrounds is a lovely spot, the sites are full hook up, 30 and 50 amp, very level, big rigs accessible. The site are manicured, and the tent site were on the bank of the river and were beautiful. They have in and out access to the river to tube, the children and adults alike were thoroughly enjoying the river. Never used the facilities so I can't comment. This location was perfect for all the area attractions. We would difiently return. read more
