We spent 2 nights here and loved our site, the deck over the rushing stream was a perfect place to sip coffee in the mornings and whiskey in the evenings. The dog park gave our pup the chance to run free, the clean bathhouses gave us a place to freshen up and the location gave us the ability to explore all Asheville had to offer, climb to the top of Mount Mitchell (the highest point East of the Mississippi) and just enjoy the surroundings. Our site had a full hook up, electric and water (even with temps in the low 20's at night), we had a fire ring (or square), a picnic table perched on the deck, cantilevered over the stream, and lovely (back-in) site with privacy and shade. We can't wait to come back.

The park is near the Blue Ridge Parkway and several nice towns with craft galleries. Many of the guests told me they had been coming for YEARS. There is nice landscaping between spaces and several of the spaces had decks over the trout stream. This RV Park has added many acres next door and is expanding. The…read moreself-check-in process is pretty easy, pick a campsite, fill out the form, paper clip your cash to it and put it in the box. However, this campsite has some serious issues. There is one bathroom, which has one toilet, just one. And this is for about a dozen campsites. Likewise, there is just one shower. At least the shower can be accessed separately while someone is on the toilet. While the bathroom was clean when I arrived, it was never cleaned nor the trash emptied during my stay. Fortunately it was just me staying there (and now I know why) so it was just my dirt I suppose, but I would have at least appreciated someone sweeping it out. While some of the campsites are not too unappealing, others are not desirable at all. They are accessed from a one-way road with nowhere to pull over to let someone pass. I even had to clear a sizable limb from the road just to be able to enter the tent camping sites. In fact, I thought no one lived on site from the lack of maintenance and lack of anyone around, but it appears they actually live in the house where the bathroom is. Yes, and the bathroom is a bit of a hike from the campsites, down a badly scalloped steep gravel road (which tested my vehicle's traction control driving in). There is neither water nor trash bin at the campsites, although I did see a water pipe laying on the ground, disconnected. The only trash bin is in the bathroom, which could get pretty nasty filling up with food scraps. Or are we just supposed to throw them into the next campsite? Who knows. The water has a yucky metallic taste. The toilet bowl is stained yellow from the water. Not too appealing. The last straw though, is the dogs. Either the owners or their neighbors own an outside dog, who starts barking whenever anyone creeps up on the bathroom in the middle of the night. Apparently no one told him this is supposed to be a campground. One night he even appeared from the shadows at the end of the building. I really don't feel like getting bit by Cujo in the middle of the night on my way to the bathroom. And the dogs (this one and others) barked and howled (yes howled) at all hours of the night (even at 2 or 3 am). I stayed here because it had a hot shower. However, I am not planning to return. Next time, I will either forgo the shower and stay at Crabtree Falls campground, or stay in the Pisgah National Forest.

Weeds regularly reach over a foot tall, yet management is quick to blame everything from the weather to property ownership rather than simply getting the grass cut. It's a perfect metaphor for the whole place -- neglect wrapped in excuses. As for amenities, calling this a resort is comedy gold. There's a small, perpetually crowded pool that's the only semblance of recreation. Beyond that? Nothing. No playgrounds, no activities, no amenities for kids -- unless you count watching the weeds grow as entertainment. The "main office" doubles as a ghost town; there's no store, no supplies, and certainly no service. The showers and changing rooms only operate during pool hours, which means forget early showers, late rinses, or any kind of off-season use. And the mountain side? It's an oven with no tree cover -- a sunbaked slope that feels less like camping and more like punishment. But the crown jewel of disappointment here is the management. The manager, Bridgette, has turned poor hospitality into an art form. Unless you're in her inner circle, expect hostility instead of help. Any mention of the park's shortcomings is met with denial or name-calling -- everyone's a liar except her. Fees appear out of thin air, rules shift without warning, and enforcement feels more like harassment than management. We were even chastised for having kids' toys and outdoor furniture -- apparently joy is a violation here. Before booking, I strongly encourage anyone to read the management's responses to other negative reviews. Notice the pattern -- rather than addressing issues, she calls the reviewers liars. I'm sure this one will be no different. If you're looking for a peaceful camping getaway, keep driving. If you're nostalgic for the charm of a retirement community run by a vindictive HOA that accidentally allows children, you've found your paradise. Lake James Campground and Marina could be something special -- but until the management and maintenance rise to even basic standards, it's a cautionary tale, not a destination.

She made fun of my friend and threatened to call the law on her. It is a shame this "owner" treats people like they are subhuman. I paid well over $115 for only 3 nights stay. All you get is a plug to hook up phone and a water spigot for that much money. It is a lovely campground but with ownership like that and the price, it's not worth it. I don't understand why people have become so cruel that simply being kind is out of their ability. And especially anyone that is in the business of serving the public, they should always choose empathy and kindness because you never know what anyone is going through. As a minority, I was incredibly suspicious that something could go south quickly. But, I was just being a judgmental ahole and this place was pretty awesome. I mean, it's straight out of something you'd see in like My Cousin Vinny or Deliverance... well, maybe not Deliverance, but you get the idea. It obviously has tons of history and visitors who leave patches and basic campground needs, etc. They sell cheap hotdogs that taste as cheaply as what you paid for them, but in a good way. The whole place is a bit of a time capsule and if you're going to be hiking in the area, you have to stop here and have a hotdog and coke on the porch. It's pretty sweet.

Growing up, our kids referred to it as the "Bridgey Mountains Cabin". Lois and Ron are wonderful hosts! It is uth Toe River built in the 1930's. It is located up hwy 80 about 30 minutes from both Spruce Pine to the right (on Hwy ) and Burnsville (on Hwy ). There are four waterfalls within a 45-minute drive. Asheville is only an hour away with the Grove Park Inn for an amazing romantic dinner, and you can visit the Biltmore Estate, Gardens & Vinyards (I highly recommend the Bistro). The cabin is located on one of the two only suspension swinging bridges in NC. The other swinging bridge is up river a few miles. We call this "Sunset Beach" because of the Vietnam veteran who stands on the bridge next to an American Flag every day at dusk and watches the sunset. We enjoy hearing his stories, and also inner-tubing, swimming, collecting mica and beautiful rocks, and fishing. Back at the cabin, just a short three minute walk from the house is the bridge used to cross the river. This is a beautiful place to enjoy wildlife, especially bird watching. Bring your binoculars. You might see the bald eagle nesting in the area. To the left of the bridge is a fantastic place young children to wade, explore, and collect rocks. To the right of the bridge, you can hop in and inner-tube down river. (Inner-tubes provided, life jackets a must! Strong currents, even for strong swimmers, bring your own). There's a grill, and if you ask nicely, John, Lois son might even build a bonfire so you can roast hot dogs and make smores! But, my husband and I both agree our favorite days are the rainy days reading on the porch listening to the rain fall on the tin roof, tree frogs, and the sound of the river. Nothing beats it. So, the next rainy weekend you dread because you think you have nothing to do, I have the perfect getaway for you, the Cabin at the Swinging Bridge!

Ron and Lois are warm, personable and very accomidating. It's pet friendly. I love the back porch which has a tin roof especially when it rains. It's a great place to spend a rainy weekend... very romantic. There is a real suspension swinging bridge on the property which is over the S. Toe River. Our 4 year old twins and 7 year old love playing in the river, albeit a bit brisk. We also go up the road 1.5 miles to the Carolina Hemlocks National Forest and picnic area and go swimming. There are also many local waterfalls which we recommend not missing.
