If you've ever wondered what happens when a campground gives up on being a campground but still…read morecharges resort prices, welcome to Lake James Campground and Marina -- a masterclass in unmet expectations. Let's start with the grounds: mowing appears to be an optional hobby rather than a maintenance task. Weeds regularly reach over a foot tall, yet management is quick to blame everything from the weather to property ownership rather than simply getting the grass cut. It's a perfect metaphor for the whole place -- neglect wrapped in excuses. As for amenities, calling this a resort is comedy gold. There's a small, perpetually crowded pool that's the only semblance of recreation. Beyond that? Nothing. No playgrounds, no activities, no amenities for kids -- unless you count watching the weeds grow as entertainment. The "main office" doubles as a ghost town; there's no store, no supplies, and certainly no service. The showers and changing rooms only operate during pool hours, which means forget early showers, late rinses, or any kind of off-season use. And the mountain side? It's an oven with no tree cover -- a sunbaked slope that feels less like camping and more like punishment. But the crown jewel of disappointment here is the management. The manager, Bridgette, has turned poor hospitality into an art form. Unless you're in her inner circle, expect hostility instead of help. Any mention of the park's shortcomings is met with denial or name-calling -- everyone's a liar except her. Fees appear out of thin air, rules shift without warning, and enforcement feels more like harassment than management. We were even chastised for having kids' toys and outdoor furniture -- apparently joy is a violation here. Before booking, I strongly encourage anyone to read the management's responses to other negative reviews. Notice the pattern -- rather than addressing issues, she calls the reviewers liars. I'm sure this one will be no different. If you're looking for a peaceful camping getaway, keep driving. If you're nostalgic for the charm of a retirement community run by a vindictive HOA that accidentally allows children, you've found your paradise. Lake James Campground and Marina could be something special -- but until the management and maintenance rise to even basic standards, it's a cautionary tale, not a destination.

Once a year in the summer, my husband's family meets at Steele Creek Campground for a day of swimming, eating, and family togetherness. My father-in-law has been coming here since he was young, and my husband and his brothers and sisters came here a lot during their childhood. It's nestled in the gorgeous Blue Ridge mountains and the temperature is perfect during the hot southern summers. The creek water is mountain cold! The park is very clean, although the smaller restrooms near the creek desperately need updating. The pool isn't quite so cold, so the kids like to switch back and forth between that and the creek. There's a big, winding tube slide built into the mountain, which does cost extra. There are two diving boards on the deep part of the creek, and also a putt putt course that looks well kept. This place has a wonderful family atmosphere. The families laugh together and people make friends. My family has not camped here, but we have strolled through the camping areas to check it out. There are a lot of RVs, lots of pop up campers, and a few tents. Lots of kids with bicycles. I grew up camping - mostly at Table Rock - and my siblings and I loved riding our bikes through the campgrounds. And in a park like this you can feel comfortable letting them. Basically, if you want WILDERNESS camping, you're not going to find it at a *campground* in the summer in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Duh! Giving a 1 star review over seeing RVs and children riding bikes and men without shirts on is unfair and rather...well, snobby and prima donna-ish...for lack of a better word. Steele Creek is a wonderful campground if you know anything about campgrounds and know what to expect in-season.

This campground at first glance is very nice. But as you get closer it leaves a lot to be desired…read more My husband and I got what they called a premium site. It was nice in the shade but it was very uneven. When we sat outside if our chairs were not close to the RV we felt like we were going to fall over. The bathhouses were not well cared for. Cobwebs every were. I don't like spiders and they should be knocked down once a day. Now let's talk about how this place nickel and dime you. They give you these wrist bands, like you get at an amusement park, so you can use the pool and other amenities and charge 8 dollars each if you lose them. There is no FREE wifi, you have to pay for it and then it is $15 per 3 days and only 3 devices. When you use the laundry and pay with the app. It will be $4 to wash $4 to dry and a $8 temporary hold. So if you are hoping to spend less here than you would at a hotel try somewhere else. If you just love being outside come here .

We have a dually and a 42' fifth wheel. The trees are not cut back, and they scrape your camper terribly. We were placed in Site D11. The campsites are not marked very well and ended up parking in site D9. Luckily, we were able to stay in that sight, thanks to the neighbors who were renting it long term. But Site D11 was rented to a motorhome so did they make a double profit? The pool closed at 7:00 and it was disgusting. The amount of HAIR that was in that pool significant. We found eyelashes around the pool that was there the entire time we were there which was a Wednesday to Sunday. The chlorine smell was never present. I can understand debris from the trees, but this was just lack of maintenance which was present at this entire campground. The water slide closed at 5:00 each day which was a bit early for the summer especially a holiday weekend. The trash dumpsters were overflowing the entire time we were there. There were a couple of children that were left attended that were entering people's cabins and campers taking things that did NOT belong to them. The SOS numbers we were given at the time of check in did NOT answer in a timely manner. I have been camping since 2005 and NEVER felt the need to lock everything we had. This is definitely not a manicured place with standards. Trash, uncut grass, dump trailers, debris Our family has never been there before and will NEVER go back. I hope you read the reviews before you reserve this place.
