I have lost all faith and confidence in River Island as a whole after shopping in their Birmingham Bullring store, yesterday I went to purchase a blue jumper with leather sleeves (£32), this was paid with an exchange of an item worth £18 and the remaining £14 was use with a gift card - the gift card originally had £26 on. As I was at the till making the transaction I asked the Store Assistant if she could tell me how much is on both of the gift cards I have (one of them having £5 on and the other £26, but I didn't know which one was which due to them being identical), she told me how much was on one (the one with the £5) on but carried on to scan the other taking the remaining £14 off - I thought nothing of this at first as I thought she would tell me the value afterwards. When my item was being bagged up and the receipts was being put into my bag I asked the woman if I needed to sign anything as half the transaction was via an exchange, she took both of the receipts out of my bag and kept one. I later found out that the receipt she took out of my bag with the receipt showing the remaining balance of the gift card that she "accidentally" kept.
After being on the phone to River Island's customer service for the best part of 30 minutes, I explained the situation and eventually got to speak with the Manager of the store (very, very rude and quick to defeat her staff), the manager put the error down to a training issue and advised me that she has watched the CCTV footage and can't see anything unusual.
The Manager also advised me that my gift card with the remaining £12 on couldn't be found after she tried looking for it, nor the receipt that the lady that served me took out of my bag... Coincidence?
Being a customer, I have lost out on £12 and not once did anyone from customer service or the people that work in the store attempt to apologise, every question I asked was cut with "I can't comment on that"... River Island is quick to take your money but when it comes to helping you out, they aren't quick at doing that.
(The Manager also told me that she did me a favour of goodwill as she had checked the CCTV footage and took the time to investigate the matter, personally I wouldn't say this was a goodwill gesture, I would say it was more of a procedure they need to follow for a customer)
With all being said, please check that you have been given the exact amount of change, all receipts etc because as soon as you leave the store, you ain't there problem because I know that a little review isn't going to make you stop shopping there, so just keep your eyes open!! read more
