First of all, I want to say that the staff could not be nicer and the service is excellent. That said, there are clearly huge problems in the kitchen, which if not quickly addressed, will likely put this restaurant out of business. Given that some of the better Italian restaurants in London are in this area of Chelsea, Ritorno has a lot of competition. I was concerned when we arrived that the restaurant was half empty and the atmosphere not exactly buzzing. The first courses we ordered were OK, with a good Fried Calamari and an excellent Tuna Tartare. The main courses were terrible. I ordered a Paillard de Pollo with Arugula and cherry tomato salad. My suspicions were aroused when it arrived - the chicken was entirely covered by the salad, in a way that suggested there was something to hide. There was. The piece of chicken was about a millimeter thick, and was grossly overcooked, to the point of being like leather. This is not a hard dish to prepare well, so it demonstrates an astonishing level of incompetence or carelessness. My wife's veal escalope was not good either - overcooked and soggy. The "fries" were thick cut and not even slightly crispy. Altogether, the cost for six people was £300, including three modest bottles of wine. I would say this is very poor value for money and, combined with lack of atmosphere and an unattractively blocked urinal in the men's loo, should be avoided at all costs. read more
