The rude and unfriendly bar tender waited until we had ordered our drinks and after informed us that our flat caps were not allowed. We asked the younger and even more snotty and miserable bar tender to explain the rule. He said that religious headwear was allowed but flat caps weren't. The shabby chiq decor was very outdated, more suited to the 1990's and the kitchen seats in the middle of the bar area were very uncomfortable.

Also it is set in the lovely little hamlet of New Eltham which is pretty and usually full of happy go lucky people trying to find somewhere great to go. So all in all you'd think the Beehive a great place but you would be SADLY WRONG. It's such a shame that this great old girl of a pub has been taken over by the lower end of the biological human chain. Most of the time it is full of mindless 'grunts' swearing, fighting and generally making the place somewhere to fear, I'd cross the street rather than walk by the doors. It really is a shame that this element of football hooligans from a 'firm' of a team from another area whom are notorious for their violence and public displays of anger (I shan't name the team but I think we all know who they are). Well apparently their local pub they used as base camp was closed down, not surprising really, so now they've moved en mass to this sleepy little hamlet and making locals lives a misery. The pub is now run down and the once great food and atmsophere have long gone, avoid like the plague unless you feel like taking your life into your own hands.

The fish was perfectly fried and the tarter sauce was obviously house made because it tasted very fresh and lemony. The chips were fine, but unremarkable in my opinion. For my meal, I ordered pumpkin walnut gnocchi. It was delicious! Just enough pumpkin without being overpowering. There was quite a bit of kale (I think it was kale, the menu didn't say) that came with the dish. It was very good, but probably could have been dialed back a little. They could not have been more curmudgeonly and unwelcoming, waiting to hasten us on our way, with the servers failing even to wish us a Happy New Year. The place was practically empty, the food indifferent and the wait staff sulky. The two young women who looked in on us had faces like thunder, so much so we felt like apologising for turning up to have dinner. They couldn't wait to get rid of us and we left at 11, knowing it was better to be somewhere they actually wanted guests. The pub management should look into why their staff's morale is so bad they vent their temper on diners.

It is positioned at the end of a lone terrace of Victorian cottages - surrounded by a never ending development of high rise blocks. The Pilot attracts a captive audience of office workers and labourers from the surrounding sites. Mind you, it could hold its own even compared to more competitively located pubs. They have an impressive choice of beers, and not just white wine for the ladies (sorry, couldn't resist). The pub has been done up carefully to appeal to diners without losing the feel of a real pub. The beer garden is nonedescript in its design, and the sight of half finished appartment blocks is just depressing, but it is still lovely to be able to sit outside on a summer's evening. The food menu is somewhat predictable and we almost ordered fish and chips when the waitress read us the list of daily specials. The duck breast served with sweet potato gnocchi was impossible to resist, and we were not disappointed. I later saw the description on a board by the bar, and apparently the stringy bits in the sauce were meant to be chicoree - not quite up to restaurant standard, but overcooked sauce is forgivable in a pub (the duck was cooked perfectly and still pink inside). It's just that little bit too far to be the obvious choice for O2 visitors, but well worth the effort.
