I'm honestly very confused and disappointed with my experience trying to get help at this veterinary clinic. I called to make an appointment for my dog, who needs surgery, and I was told that because I'm not an existing client, they wouldn't be able to see her. When I asked how I could become a client, they said they are not accepting any new patients--not now, and not in the future. That was really shocking to hear, especially when my dog needs medical attention. I wasn't expecting to be turned away without any real explanation or alternative. I don't understand how a veterinary clinic can completely shut its doors to new pets, especially when it's an emergency or serious situation. I really wanted my dog to be treated there, but unfortunately, I wasn't even given the chance. read more

I followed Dr. Chris and Dr. Lisa Serpico when they left their Lake Zurich practice to start their own Rising Sun practice many, many years ago. Since then, they have cared for seven of my pet family members - 5 having gone over that dreaded rainbow bridge. I don't care how bad the traffic is, or how long it takes to get there from Lake Zurich, I wouldn't trust anyone else. For the complainer who wasn't a registered client and couldn't get a sick animal into the practice, that's what emergency vet clinics are meant for until you find a vet for routine care. And those others who complain they can't get in because the practice is full, would you rather have the practice overbook, spend more time in the waiting room, and spend less time with your pet? Obviously, time and attention to care for pets is more important than getting extra bucks to squeeze in more patients. read more

** NOTE: Based on exploratory call & inquiry only ** Been feeling less that completely solid about my current vet (of 5-6 years) recently, and that of course, has me looking around... prefer Vets that actually seem to like and care for their furry patients. Should probably pay extra attention to Pet Parents that pay for insurance and the best in food and meds for their furkids... how dare you have a vet tech tell me to wait in the lobby so your newbie receptionist can practice a urine draw on my cat? #mofos Anywho... Googled for a "holistic vet" near me with good reviews and found this business. Distance isn't that convenient but its doable, and considering I've driven 45+ min to a AVDC vet for dental surgery, not remotely a big deal. So called to inquire and maybe consult at 10am - and got a pickup on the call but no voice... sat on the line for 45 secs and wondered if I had been put on hold without any notice. Hmm... not great first impression. Tried a message on FB Messenger to ask about it - were they closed? There was no response. The web page seems to malfunction here, but is linked on FB. So checked it out... it only partially works - clicking on the one that talks about "services" results in a 404 error - not found. Again - not a good look. Professionalism seems to be missing... and impression was locked when I called back again at noonish and got a hurried "Hold Please" without any question and placed onto a familiar dead silent line. When the harried teenage(?) boy came back - there had to be a confused discussion on what I wanted - then a quick blanket statement on this Vet practice not taking new clients unless referred by an existing one... and that they were too busy to take new appointments until the new year. Am I wrong in feeling that was that seemed presumptuous and rude? I explained - this was just an exploratory consult, and I did not need any services - just wanted to see about this practice - due to a decrease in satisfaction with my current vet's recent service during and post-pandemic. So more holds, while he talked to vet (assume its "Dr. Chris"- that's weird not using last names imho btw) on whether or not to take me on as a client. I reiterated... I wanted to visit this practice or talk to a vet for a couple minutes NOT schedule an appointment. Lack of basics in business setup (web site, VM or phone system, FB Messenger monitoring, etc.) seem to indicate a less than ideal practice, at least to someone that works as a business systems & process analyst. Summation - no confidence in this practice. Make me question what the process would be like if you NEEDED services or even a call back. Aren't there policies in place to answer standard questions? Constantly putting a client on hold to go ask questions in real-time... really? Is there not an office manager on staff? read more

Dr. Chris is a wonderful Vet he is very straight forward when speaking with me which I appreciate. He looked at our 10-year-old Golden Retriever and 6-Month-old Golden Retrievers as individual dogs, then breed, then their lifestyle he then made a plan for the best overall treatment for both dogs including vaccines. I rarely write reviews but, this practice deserves one. It's a convoluted story of how we wound up here but, no regrets. My husband, now retired, was an orthopedic veterinary surgeon so, I do know a bit about what I speak. My 4 year old golden retriever has been going here since in utero as, her breeder brought all his dogs here. I find all Vets, Vet Techs etc at RSVC to be kind, more than competent, highly professional, compassionate and quite affordable given Vet Med, today. I would recommend them without any hesitation. Yes, it can be frustrating to be put on hold but, where does that not happen? The clinic is 'shabby chic' but clean and, perhaps how they can keep their prices lower? For those who complain about the fact that they're occasionally not taking new patients, please, realize that is a sign of a good and successful practice. Peace. read more

Dr. Chris is amazing with my 5 pets. 3 cats, two dogs. I adopted a dog who needed immediate medical attention and had health problems prior to adoption and Dr. Chris was all on board to help save this dog and give him the treatments he would need to survive. He has seen my oldest dog her whole life, so for 9 years. And my oldest cat a majority of his life, who is 18 years old and in great health. It is tough to get an appointment because of how high in demand he is :) but totally worth it!!! read more

I would like to thank the entire staff at Rising Sun Veterinary Clinic for their dedication in taking such wonderful care of our pets no matter what the situation or how bad the Chicago weather becomes...I would also like to let everyone everywhere know how thankful I am that they have given me extra quality time to spend with many of the pets I've had over the years by being proactive with their healthcare needs. Thank you for taking such good care of Gaffer,Susy,Demitre and Jimmy cats..We have a long history at Rising Sun..with cats and our other dogs too..Foxy,Jay Jay and Boomer . I..especially want to thank all of you for braving the rain and very cold elements coming out of warm offices to our cars during Covid...The entire team worked well together to provide TLC for our animals .The staff is considerate, kind, and professional. I think each of them provides emotional support to all of us when we are upset that our pets are sick....by giving us confidence in their experience and abilities.. My dog Ozzie is on medicine (pills) and herbs that have been well monitored throughout the years through excellent communication with the doctors ..and staff. He also gets his yearly required health shots as well as the occasional allergy shot.Ozzie must take pills for a tumor in one his lungs which he does without fail due to fact he enjoys doing so with a little inspiration from some peanut butter. I just called them and they said they are not taking new patients. I asked the lady who answered if they recommend anyone else. I am looking for a vet who does not overmedicate, and she said "we do lots of pills and shots here." What? Lol. That was quite ridiculous. I am totally okay with medicine when necessary, but I am not okay with overmedicating. I would think twice about bringing your pet here with how much they love drugging instead of possible prevention or food changes, etc. I am not even sure why she said that to me. Strange place. I cannot give Dr Chris Serpico and his team enough accolades for the emergency treatment they provided for our pup today. We woke up at 6am to our dog licking/biting himself furiously, we checked him out and saw he had a large lump the size of a golf ball bright red on his behind. It was bleeding and oozing. Bear was miserable......We called the office half hour before opening to leave a' message and Dr Chris himself answered the phone. I told him what was going on and even though they were booked he told me to come right in to get Bear looked at . They took him in and he was back in my hands on his way home in less than 30 minutes. Dr Serpico came out, gave me my buddy back after lancing and cleansing his infected gland and some antibiotics etc and scheduled a follow up appt. amazing customer service and clearly the care of animals is the top priority here, and it shows. I will tell everyone I know this is the best place to bring your animals! read more

My 8 year old boxer mix was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and Rising Sun Clinic was recommended to me by a coworker. Dr. Chris practices alternative treatments which I wanted to explore. When I called to make an appointment the receptionist explained that they weren't taking new patients, but she said she would ask Dr Chris and he agreed to see Coby. On our first visit I was amazed at how thorough Dr Chris was and how much info, he gave me and the different herbs he sent us home with. My husband had some questions I couldn't answer, so he called Dr. Chris and they spoke for quite a while, answering all my husbands questions. Dr. Chris has even called me to see how Coby is doing and to see if we needed to refill any of the meds. We're so grateful for all the care and advise Dr Chris has given us. We started coming here years ago when our dog Steve developed an autoimmune disease. He was never cured, but Dr. Chris brainstormed, coming up with different formulas to keep him mobile and comfortable. When Steve's body no longer responded to one treatment, Dr. Chris came up with a different one. I credit him with adding years to our dog's life. Steve lived to be over 15 years old. I also have to credit Dr. Chris with two other things: 1) he is pragmatic, never pushing expensive treatments unless he really thinks they will work and 2) he was great about having that "end of life" talk with us directly. We moved to Evanston almost nine years ago, but we still make the trip out to Desplaines for our dogs. It is worth the trip! read more

This clinic has by far surpassed all expectations. They have a dream team of veterinarians and although it doesn't look like a whole lot from the outside, what's inside is more important. Especially when you're dealing with your fur babies. Family practices are hard to come by so when I find one, I stay loyal to them and try to refer everyone I possibly can. Dr. Cara is one of the most thoughtful, caring and intelligent people I've ever met...hands down. I've been coming to her with my cats for over five years now and she has never disappointed me. Dr. Chris, Dr. Lisa, Dr. Cara and the techs at the practice are the only reason why one of my cats survived. Even when I lost hope, Dr. Cara insured me that she would do anything and everything that they possibly could to save him. And she did exactly that, going above and beyond what was expected. My year old pup got diagnosed with luxating patella in both knees and we were looking for non-surgical options. After going to several vets and hearing things like surgery is the only option to her having no feeling in her hind legs and she will be paralyzed within few months, we found Dr. Chris and Rising Sun Vet Clinic. After seeing my dog, he gave me several non-surgical options right away and mentioned that surgery will be the very last resort. He also eased my mind by explaining the reason the last vet thought she did not have feeling in her hind legs is because she was too scared to respond to any touch tests (she is a very anxious dog). From the moment I met Dr. Chris, it was clear how much he cares for the his furry clients and knows how to tend to their individual needs. This is a great clinic...very caring and affordable. I travel 20 minutes past many other vets to take my cat who HATES riding in the car here because they are just that great. Highly recommend them. ***UPDATE*** My cat had a reaction to the vaccinations... not only did they fit him in the same day, but they didn't charge for the appointment! It is not an overstatement to say that Dr.'s Chris and Lisa Serpico are the best veterinarians ever. My 15 year old dog, Milo, developed glaucoma that left him blind in one eye and suffering daily with severe migraines. He was in such a condition that he could bear to do nothing but sleep constantly. We took him to an eye specialist and they would discuss no other alternative than to put Milo under general anesthesia and remove his eyeball. Of course, this procedure would cost literally thousands of dollars, never mind our well-founded concern that our 15 year old pooch with so-so kidney levels would not survive the anesthesia. We explained the situation to Dr. Chris and he elected to perform a less extreme (and vastly, VASTLY less expensive) procedure in which the eyeball was injected with a substance to kill the fluid producing cells that were causing the pressure/migraines. After the procedure, Milo was young again; it was clear that all of the "old age" problems he had been exhibiting were caused by his migraines, and now he was energetic and lively once again. A bit over a year later, at the ripe age of 16, we did wind up having to put Milo down, but we will always be grateful for that extra year of high quality life that the Serpicos gave to Milo. We will also always appreciate the sincerity and sympathy they provided when the time came to say goodbye to him. Even though we have moved to Schaumburg, we are still taking our other dog to Rising Sun Veterinary Clinic and would never dream of switching. It is a rare thing to feel like any doctor's "only" patient, but that is the feeling a patient gets at Rising Sun. The whole staff demonstrates a genuine personal investment in each animal's well-being and particular needs. Their treatments really are custom-tailored to the individual animal in question, and this personalized care applies to everything from surgeries to routine vaccinations. Even if you believe your current veterinarian provides good care for your pet, you will be blown away by the care given at Rising Sun. read more

NEXT! The Streamwood review: I am sorry to hear about the pancreatitis part of your review and am glad to hear your dog is doing better. That is important to recognize those kind of symptoms. My only thing to say here is to remind yourself about when your dog's vaccine is due. You want a postcard? Like what? A hoity toity vet....go to Lincoln Park...where your dog is a number. I have nothing but great things to say about the staff & Dr. Chris. He is in this clinic TO HELP not for the money, that is clearly seen in his care, his approach to the animals and his fun nature personality that seems to calm you when you want to freak out about whats wrong with your pet. After reading the reviews I decided to put in my own two cents. First of all, I wanted to mention Dr. Cara, who is so good with our two cats, one of whom can be a large pain-in-the-neck. Dr. Chris is always compassionate and usually also entertaining. The staff is consistently helpful. A side note: Most of the "negative" reviews are from people who were disappointed that the clinic was no longer taking new patients. That alone should tell you something. read more

Going to the vet is always a stressful situation at first for my dog, but Dr. Chris is always so wonderful that it makes it much easier on both of us. He's incredibly caring and makes sure all your questions are answered. I also appreciate that he understands that many petowners are already on a tight budget. My last vet would try to convince me my dog needed numerous different tests and exams, many of which started to rack up the bill and weren't even necessary. Rising Sun is always willing to work with me on what I can afford. They support holistic medicine, and every herbal supplement I've gotten from them has helped my dog, but they also recognize when your pet needs a regular medication like antibiotics. Additionally, his receptionists are great too. My dog took a tumble down the stairs and ended up ripping out a toenail. Although I was able to get an appointment the next day, the receptionist gave me tips on how to help with my dog's pain and reduce the risk of infection until I could get into see Dr. Chris. To the person who left the one-star review, I think it's lousy for you to give them such a low rating without ever going there. Not accepting new patients does not warrant a one-star rating! It means they are putting quality over quantity. I'd much rather have a vet who takes the time to answer my questions instead of rushing me through an appointment just so they can see as many people as they can that day! read more

I cannot give this place five stars anymore, I just can't. Things started to go downhill, and fast, and I won't be back. My Poodle had mysterious pains in her abdomen on and off for three years. Without anything resembling an exam, she was diagnosed as having strained her muscles (even though she is a chill, relaxed dog and never jumps off of the couch or bed). It happened again, and this time (again without any blood work or exams or anything) I was told that she was depressed. I decided to get a second opinion, where I found out that she had pancreatitis and had likely had it for all those times that she was "straining herself". Needless to say, I was mortified. She went on the appropriate low fat, raw diet, some new probiotics, and now she's completely under control. If it had continued to be ignored and misdiagnosed, it could have killed her. So, thanks for that. There was also the incident where I brought her in to have a tumor removed and biopsied, and while they were at it, decided to pull a tooth after I specifically said "no extractions". Lisa claimed I lied to her and literally laughed in my face when I said that I was angry that she not only went against what I said, but pulled what a different vet there had said was a perfectly healthy tooth. Finally, here's a good scary story for pet owners. They don't like doing vaccine reminders (like, you know, every other vet everywhere does). So when I called to get my Beagle's rabies certificate sent to our new vet, they decided that was the appropriate time to remind me that he was MONTHS overdue. Are you effing kidding me, Rising Sun?! Thanks to your oversight, my dog was illegally unvaccinated against rabies for months! If he'd been bitten, he could be dead right now, all because you couldn't send a damned postcard. It seems to me that it's an industry standard, when the vaccine is due, remind the client. Hell, if you're worried about saving trees, pick up the phone and call. Email me. Send me a text, I don't care, but completely ignoring it is unacceptable. Also, if you choose to come here, be ready to wait a month or more for an appointment, even if it's relatively serious. I won't be back, period. I trusted them with my critters back when they were a little start up, but it seems that nowadays, they'd rather toss some unpronounceable herbs and woo-woo at your pet and hope that it works. While Dr. Chris has great bedside manner and seems to care, I don't think they're able to properly care for the number of patients they have and are seriously slipping. A shame. read more

He is very welcoming and answers all of our questions. Prior to purchasing our dog i called the vet and asked if Dr. Chris could spare a moment to answer some questions I had.
