Delightfully fresh and flavorful Galician seafood at a higher price range…read more My friend and I were visiting A Coruña for the weekend and set on a mission in search for centolla (spider crab). We looked around for the best seafood spots and found La Sarten. Although we made the reservation the morning of, we luckily snagged a table at 2pm. We got to the restaurant early, but they sat us at a table anyway. The interior of the restaurant is compact, with probably less than 20+ table seats and a handful of bar seats. Immediately we noticed that the restaurant was frequented by locals. The bartender and waiters chatted with the guests like old friends, and treated us with similar cordiality. The décor was hip and modern. Clearly the manager emphasized presentation, but how about the food? We ordered a glass of albariño (Galician white) and a (beer with lemonade) and eager inquired about the spider crabs. "No, it was unavailable." "Why not? Isn't it September the season?" "Regretfully you are just a week or two early this year." We were devastated. We had ourselves all worked up about spider crabs, researched everything about centolla dishes, only to miss it by a week. Crestfallen, we ordered two dishes recommended by our waiter in lieu. = Food = Almeja babosa a la marinera (€20): Venus clams sautéed with sailor's sauce. Loved it. The fresh plump clams were enveloped in a sauce bursting with flavor from albariño wine, garlic, tomatoes, onions, and saffron. Large portion size justifies the price. Arroz con bogavante (€28 per person, two minimum): Rice with lobster. A Galician take on Valencian paella, this sumptuous dish is choke full of lobster meat. Perhaps the best dish we had on this trip. The rice was perfectly cooked, intensely flavored by the seafood broth and saffron. Comes served in a big saucepan that keeps the dish hot while you work through it. Warning - it is a lot of food, and you will not be able to resist finishing all of it. = Verdict = While we did not find cebolla, we had an amazing, coma-inducing gastronomic experience. I highly recommend this restaurant for those who love shellfish. I would definitely come back, and hopefully in time for cebolla season!

As with most restaurants directly on the plaza, the prices are a bit higher than one might expect for this area of Galicia, but the quality of the food is outstanding. We were brought some crackly, fluffy Galician bread, which is impossible not to pick at, while we decided what to order. We ordered both a bottle of wine and sangria. As someone who is particular about sangria, I was very impressed at how well the it was mixed. It was less punchy and sweet than some sangrias, but retained its fruitiness and was very refreshing. For appetizers, we shared the pimientos de padron which were cooked to absolute perfection. It made me miss the home cooking that I once got to enjoy. In this batch, there were no hot surprises but the peppers were crispy without being soggy and perfectly salted. We also shared the croquetas de bacalao, which were some of the best I've ever had. There was so much bacalao in them and the outside of the croquetas retained their crispiness without the insides getting mushy. For a main course, I had the merluza. The best part of going to Galicia is access to seafood where the fish were caught earlier that day. The merluza was so fresh, and the red sauce it is prepared in did not overpower the fish. The portion was quite generous too - I had leftovers, which I shared with the rest of my table. By the time we had dessert, the only option available was ice cream. (There is a much better ice cream shop about a 5 minute walk away.) It would have been nice to try the Tarta Santiago or one of the other homemade desserts.

Mainly, this is due to the menu consisting of extremely good fish and seafood (just have a look at what's on display: it is truly excellent). There's also meat, but we didn't have any (although it has to be said that steaks being served on other tables looked very nice). We had grilled squid and scallops as starters. The squid were ever so slightly charred, but tasted fresh and were quite light (there's a trend in flooding them in oil, and here, this was not the case). The scallops were OK, but nothing more. They tasted like nice, fresh scallops (and I mean zamburiña, the baby variety, not to be mistaken with vieiras), with a bit of oil and lemon juice. I had grilled salted cod with pisto and spuds. Pisto is some sort of Spanish ratatouille, but it amounted to a bunch of finely cut veggies tossed in a pan. The cod, on the other hand, was superb: mildly crisp on the outside, but with clear and juicy flakes oozing moisture. Absolutely delicious. The desserts were good. Lemon cream was some sort of lemon mousse with a few berries floating about. Overall, a very good place to eat. Fairly expensive, but then you're getting top fish and seafood. The place is stacked with wine bottles, so I'm guessing that the wine list is also extensive, although didn't have wine. The place is fairly small (hardly a dozen tables), being quite intimate and also resembling a rather traditional drinking den. They also serve some fancy bread, which I wasn't too impressed about but people seemed to enjoy a lot too.

Pulpo a feira (really tender), grilled scallops, and shrimp were well seasoned and flavorful. All paired well with chilled Albariño. We said we can wait but they refused to make dinner for us; how can you order if you don't know the menu. Basically don't go there other that you know the order before getting there. We shared a few appetizers, which included: Croquetas de bacalao - Delicious! Perfectly crisp on the outside, and the texture on the inside was perfectly cooked. Lots of bacalao flavor, without being overly salty. Mixed cheese plate - Incredible - a marvelous selection of aged and young Spanish cheeses. There was so much cheese here - definitely a great option to share with a group of 3 or 4 people. It is a lot of fun to pair the various cheeses with wine. Pimientos de Padron - Not the best. They were oiler than they should have been, but thankfully they did not lose their crispness entirely. The bread served with our plates was also very fresh - the typical Galician ring bread. The service was very attentive and friendly (as most of the Galicians are!). Even though it was getting late, and we were the only patrons left in the restaurant, no one was looking to get us to leave. Overall, the Noray experience was a pleasant one, with good food and wine.
