This place never disappoints. The main meat dishes with sides are quite simple, but always perfectly prepared. Probably the most underrated item of all on the menu is the (beautiful) salpicao chicken salad, but it is a gem - don't sleep on this one. It's very carroty and has a unique flavor that is hard to describe - nothing like any American chicken salad you may have tried - and a bit saltier. The picanha is grilled to perfection, and if you choose rice, the rice is lightly seasoned and soaks up some of the meat juice. As I mentioned, it is very simple food, so don't expect a side of sauce or elaborate marination. It's more about the appreciation of well-made food and allowing its natural taste to really shine. Additional notes: Also worthwhile is their passion fruit salmon. When I went there in person, they always had a delightful coconut rice pudding with a prune. This is the market/ quick grill self service buffet of rio restaurant. It's a very affordable option for small plates if you don't want to do the all you can eat option at the restaurant. The workers are always friendly and fast to get your order. I like getting the 50 cent small cheese breads or the 3 dollar fresh passion fruit juice. Breakfast is very affordable for what you get- 2 sausage, 2bacon, one hash, one egg and one piece of toast with either coffee or tea for 5.99. Buffet is on the pricier side 11.99 or 13.99 a lb depending on what you get but again if you are looking for smaller portions it's reasonable. read more

Nice small fresh buffet! Have one or through the grocery market side of this business a few times & bought some snacks, but never eat on the "restaurant "side. Was running errands in the area with a stop at Astoria bookshop & in search of a late lunch. The crepe cafe was closed & considering this area is "Little Brazil" of NYC & maybe Queens, it makes complete sense to support local and eat local. This place didn't disappoint, but I wish I knew more about the cuisine and the culture of ordering food because it looked like they had made-to-order hot foods and probably other tasty snacks and drinks behind the counter. But the buffet was great in itself anyway. For 3 PM on a Friday, the place was really busy! Almost every table was taken with small adult, families, dining, couples, workers, shoppers. When I left a group of three junior high school kids took up a table in the corner with cake and snacks. Some eating steak/grilled beef & rice, flan & a coffee, another eating a large plate of penne pasta with a yellow-light orange cream sauce. For $15 I got a buffet plate & a bottled passionfruit seltzer (cashier said "Great choice!" She loves passionfruit). I got some cold items: cucumber salad, marinated mushroom, fresh cubed beets, hearts of palm. Hot items included white rice, pinto beans (nicely seasoned!), a piece of coconut fried shrimp (so fresh, crispy & coconuty), pork ribs in a sweet, orange sauce, and fish and shrimp in a creamy yellow sauce. A lot of customers were taking a medium sized coffee cup, and filling it with the fried Chicharron/pork belly, coconut shrimp, and spring rolls. There wasn't plain grilled meats on the buffet, you might have had to order that as a entrée. Saw a lot of customers coming in to pick up prepared foods also. The fried snacks, croquettes & coxinhas at the front counter looked very well made, not greasy. There was chicken, beef, cheese, meat, and cheese, heart of palm. A shrimp hand pie other sweet pastries, cakes, custard and Dulce de Leche filled donuts. Not sure how new this iteration of the buffet is and business model, but I'm a new fan! They also had a soup of the day, it was a creamy fish soup. The cashier was so nice & constantly cleaning the buffet & tables also. I was looking for Skala haircare at Rio, and although I was unable to find it, I was really impressed by how many other offerings Rio Market had on the shelves. From beauty to pantry goods to frozen tubs of açai, I would definitely head here for all my Brazilian needs. No Internet service is available in the store. I had to check in before I came inside. I do not use public WiFi due to hacking concerns. Some staff assisted me in buying popular Brazilian food. I got what I could not get in a typical Brazilian restaurant: Baked Garlic and Parmesan Yucca Snack; and Cheese-bread Waffles. I paid $5.58. There was no tax. If I like what I purchased, I will come back. The store decor needs updating, and somebody needs to clean the floors and organize the shelves a bit. Was craving a hearty Brazilian lunch after days of rain. For $19 you get a buffet bar , that has all the Brazilian specialities, including traditional black beans and pork meat stew Feijoada. All the side dishes are here too. I also tried salada russa and bobo camarao. All were very tasty and hearty. Afterwards did a little shopping at the market that has loads of imported Brasilian goodies, like pao de queijo, and has a full meat counter for all kinds of sausages and other meat cuts if you want to do your own churrasco etc. read more

I am a Social Worker at a Brooklyn school with a diverse student population representing nearly 50 countries of origin. I run a multicultural group that brings together many of these students across several grades. Twice a month, we celebrate two or more of the cultures of the participants by visiting ethnic neighborhoods or businesses and trying typical foods. On Wed, Feb 26, we arranged to visit Rio Market in Astoria to celebrate Brazilian carnival through food. We concluded it with a birthday party. The service was amazing. The staff was generous, kind, patient, courteous, accommodating and professional. The food was epic. The kids loved, loved, loved nearly everything: the rice, the vegetarian beans, the feijoada, the linguiça de frango, and, especially, the picanha were tasty and delicious. The farofa was good, too, but some of the students didn't like the grainy/sandy texture. The cakes were moist and delicious, and the pão de queijo was also a big hit. All 22 students and staff give Rio Market 5 out of 5 stars. Excellent. read more

this was or is... originally a Brazilian product supermarket. me with Brazilian heritage I always come here to buy my favorite childhood products of stuff to cook whenever I am nostalgic and want to taste my home country food. for a couple of years they were trying to expand their services and they started to do money transfers, little information board with rooms for rent and jobs needed or wanted. but lately I think that their expansion may start to do more harm than good really. the first catastrophic change or adjustment is that they made this ice cream area when the whole frozen yogurt hype was happening, not they only have these unused machines and nobody eats the ice cream there, looks really weird. but now another thing that is kind of taking off but I am not so sure I really like is this new little cafeteria style restaurant they have. I won't lie they have some ok prices for the food and some cool promotions for drinks and combos, but now here is what I dislike a bit. their food is not of best quality and taste, I am not sure they are trying to get better at all and yet the market ppl keep making sure to expand the restaurant and make the market that is so much more useful to the community even smaller every time. I am very nervous and somewhat afraid that the market might have its days counted to give space to a mediocre at best restaurant. here is what I have ate in the restaurant: COXINHA COM CATUPIRY - it tasted doughy and the weirdest thing ever was that the chicken was a weird ball stuffed in there and once you took a bit the ball didn't even move..... it was like the dough and the chicken were not from the same meal.... RISOLE DE QUEIJO - this is like a cheese salgadinho... it was once again a heavy dough and I got to be honest, I don't think there was any cheese in there.... RISOLE DE CARNE - this one is a ok salgadinho, I really like it, but again is it worth it to take a chance of a business that benefits society just cause you restaurant has one non mediocre item? This place seems to me like a general Brazilian mini market with a cafe offering a simple menu. I ordered a "top sirloin" (or "picanha"), done medium well, which comes with three sides - I chose rice, black beans, and "farofa" - to find out exactly what that was. I explored the market while the order was cooking, and the shelves are stocked with a wide variety of Brazilian food products as well as conveniences like soaps and baby formula. The seating area is a bit small, but brightly decorated and there is a TV playing Brazilian news. When I tried the dish, the steak was very nicely done - flavorful, tender and chewy, juicy and moist. It was on the salty side, and one can taste quite a few large salt crystals on it, but it did not detract from the steak. I heard to expect that of Brazilian grilling. The rice was alright, but a teensy bit hard. The black beans were less impressive, being a bit hard and bland. The "farofa," as I found out, was manioc or cassava flour, toasted in oil - so it's like crunchy breadcrumbs, and this came mixed with bacon bits. What's not to like about it? The staff is friendly, and the place is quite clean. It may be a casual place, but the place uses dishes and silverware. The establishment is just a block away from the N and Q subway line. read more

Recommendation: The store is located in a street where it's hard to find a place to park. Wow what a hidden gem in the heart of Astoria Queens! Randomly found this place with a friend while on our way to a museum in the neighborhood. The place is a little eat in/grocery store in the back. I didn't expect the food to be as good as it was just by appearance alone, but they say don't judge a book by its cover right? I had penne ala vodka and my friend had grilled chicken with salad and rice. The food was superb! Hot & delicious. It gets no better than Rio Market and the prices were reasonable. This is a small market in Astoria that has mostly all Brazilian brand products. I come here often to get certain items that come from Brazil. The market is good it has everything I need. The only downside is that sometimes things run out and it takes a week or two for them to restock. But other than that it's great. There is also a place to eat here as well. It's not the typical Brazilian buffet style. I usually have the beef with onions that come with the standard rice, beans and French fries. But you can switch to have other sides if you'd like for example like roasted potatoes, vegetables, corn, beans, mashed potatoes and more. They also serve stroganoff (shrimp or chicken), chicken, fish, sirloin, salads, and breakfast foods. In the Brazilian culture they also serve pastels (which is similar to empanadas, that have cheese, beef or chicken filled inside then it's fried). They also have coxinhas which are like fried potato balls with chicken filling inside, it's very traditional and great! They have many many more and so many options which is fantastic. Overall the food taste great!!! The pricing is awesome I had a full meal for about 9 dollars! The only thing is that it gets so busy the cashier has so much going on that I had to repeat to her many times the order. This isn't a typical restaurant so when they ring the bell you have to go get the food yourself. I would recommend to go a little bit after 12 or you won't have a place to sit and enjoy your meal. After your meal you also have to go empty your plate and leave the plate on top of a certain counter. They also offer desserts like frozen yogurt and more! There is available street parking which gets crazy on the weekends especially! But I went on a Monday afternoon and there was available parking right in front. That being said, they also have a large selection of EXPIRED products, and, worse yet, nobody in the place seems to care! As an example, I recently purchased 2 jars of cheese spread @ $4.99 each and not one but both were completely sour!!! Called the store and was told by their so-called MANAGER that this could NOT be possible....it must have something to do with my "interpretation " of what it should taste like. WHAT????!!!!! Don't even know what to make of that response! No apology.....nothing! Just this pompous and condescending attitude from someone who barely spoke proper English! Trust me, only here would they get away with this kind of behavior. Nobody in Brazil would EVER put up with this garbage!!!! I ordered off of seamless Web. The delivery never arrived I received an alert saying food was delivered at 5:35 PM I received that alert probably around 5:25 PM the food never arrived when I called the restaurant to let them know they were skeptical that I was telling the truth. They proceeded to tell me that they said the order was delivered. I ended up calling seamless they tried to contact the restaurant they did not answer the phone call from seamless. seamless then refunded my order the last I left off with this restaurant was they would call me back they never did. I've been in the food industry for 15 years that's pretty pathetic customer service and it's a shame because I read good reviews about the quality food from this restaurant but because of that I will never order from them. The arrogance to actually accuse someone of having food delivered and then claiming it wasn't is ridiculous to me Update the restaurant never called me back so I finally called to ask what happened they told me that the delivery driver saw somebody at the front door that person said it was from my apartment and they gave them the food.
