Here in Buenos Aires, the melted cheese dish is known as provoleta and if your sensibilities mirror mine I'd suggest getting it wherever and whenever you see it on a menu. No exception here. I came back a second time with a smaller group and really couldn't justify provoleta for my party of 2 simply because I knew I'd consume it all. So my second visit, while very good indeed, allowed me to focus on parts of the menu that I'd enjoyed previously while not over-filling myself on provoleta. What that looked like was this: Multiple versions of empanadas, Choripán (basically a sausage sandwich), and flan, all accompanied by beer and wine and all enjoyed at a very reasonable price. TripAdvisor guests rate El Sanjuanino very high as do I. I have a hunch it'd be the place I'd return to repeatedly each time I found myself in Recoleta. It's casual and delicious - especially the provoleta - attracting both Argentinians and in-the-know travelers. You'd be wise to count yourself amongst them.

But hey, if you come here you mainly come for empanadas!! And those are great! I tried both fried and baked, and I liked them both. Service was very nice and fun, we felt very welcome and cared for. We ate outside, and it was very pleasant, so I can't really say something about the ambience inside.

The pastel colored exterior and traditional wood/vegetative interior is stunning. We ordered traditional Argentine cuisine. For a side, the sweet potato was delicious and cooked open flame on the grill.

They brought out complimentary bread and olives, plus fainá, and even surprised us with pear sorbet on the house. Little touches like that go a long way. We ordered the behemoth milanesa napolitana an absolute monster of a plate in the best possible way. The roasted bell peppers Hands down some of the best I've ever had. Sweet, smoky, perfectly done. We also had the tomato carpaccio fresh and bright, and a tortilla de papa, which we asked to be cooked a bit longer since I'm not a fan of runny eggs. They nailed it. Generous portions, thoughtful service, and food that hits all the right notes. Hard not to walk out happy.

The best part is that this is a locals restaurant, and it has such a great feel. The minute you walk inm you are welcomed by a friendly staff and led to a table, we chose upstairs and were quickly seated. Our waiter was friendly and jovial, and spoke great english. He recommended a Malbec, and then we ordered a bunch of food, which came quickly. As we dined, the placed filled up quickly, and looking around, there was not an empty table in the place- upstairs or down. The restaurnat has an Italian family feel, white table cloths and worn, but classy china. Plus the grill is amazing. Overall, this place is excellent, and a local friend who I dined with said he will be making this place one of his regular stops!

The portions here are massive. And that's coming from someone who can usually put away a pretty serious steak. Here, though It's a lot even for me. Was it good Absolutely. But a little heads-up if you're visiting: learn how Argentinians order their meat. If you ask for jugoso, it'll land somewhere between rare and medium rare. Al punto is closer to medium, sometimes even leaning toward medium well depending on the kitchen. And well done. Honestly... don't even think about it. Another tip: don't rush to order sides. Unless you're just getting a salad or you're sharing with more than two people, one plate is usually more than enough. Around here, they believe in feeding you properly and they definitely deliver.
