ERL better known as Rincon should be your go-to for all occasions you want Salvadorian food. I ALWAYS go for 3 things every time. Sopa de gallina india, plato guanaco, and pupusas revueltas. The soup is by far my favorite and personally no one else makes a caldo de gallina like that in the city. Whether I'm sick or had way too much fun the night before, that soup always hits the spot and brings me back to life. The best part is that when sports are in full swing, you can watch games live on the big screens. From Futbol to Football and everything in between. And everyone is so nice. I got 2 tortillas with a slice of cheese sprinkled with pork. Extremely disappointed. I asked if they had empanadas, lady stated yes. There are certainly a lot of Central American eateries in Excelsior and Crocker-Amazon. It's hard to know the standouts beyond the weekend Pollo a la Brasa at the original El Porteño (review: https://bit.ly/3Jn7Q0q). Mmm, that was good, so when I'm in the area strolling, I'll sometimes take a bottle-spinning approach in trying a spot for lunch. I was encouraged to see such a spacious restaurant in this dense area, and this one is conveniently located on Mission just north of Geneva.The menu was completely in Spanish, so I was spending an inordinate amount of time entering words into Google Translate. Then I saw the word "Lengua", and I said to myself, "I loves me some tongue". It was probably a good thing I didn't say it out loud since I wasn't looking for a date. Was craving pupusas and this was a quick walk from where we live. The food was amazing. We had a party of 3 and we ordered a Botana Regular and two pupusas to split and a Churrasco Salvadoreño for myself. The shrimp and steak were so flavorful! Some bits of steak were dry but overall still good. The cheese pupusa was chefs kiss. My favorite thing there. Service was great - our waitress was really attentive and the owner of the restaurant was also nice suggesting things for us to try. We have been coming here for years for pupusas which are always great but I wanted to try something diff so I chose Botana regular for my son and I. He got an elote thinking it was just Mex street corn. When it came as soup we laughed but when we tasted it omg. It was amazing!!! It's only I think 6.00 and the flavor was perfect warm creamy with cinnamon sticks. Just perfect. The Botana came and there was just one problem lol it was too good! We should have gotten the bigger size and been pigs. Lol. (Next time we'll bring one more person) the shrimp was grilled perfectly. The guac was thick and the steak was also perfect. I personally didn't like the service or the food. I came here with my family, and we ordered 2 steaks with shrimp with rice, salad, and 2 side orders of refried beans and 1 sopa de res. As an appetizer, we ordered guacamole, which is the only thing that was delicious to me and my family. The guacamole is served with handmade tortillas strips. When our food is served, it was okay, not the best. The problem started with the beans because they were cold and not hot, so I asked the waitresses if they could reheat the beans because they're cold. I think this upset them because not once did they ask if everything is ok or if we need anything else. I had to ask for napkins. The sopa de res was lukewarm and salty, but we didn't want to make another complaint about the food, and my family member just ate a little and left the rest. Also, my family made a comment about the food that the steak was a small portion, as we were eating compared to other places we have eaten. I don't know if the waitresses or the cook had friend's eating there because they were watching the soccer game and switching the channels, but they were also waiting for food, and as we are finishing eating they are making sarcastic comments that there meet is to small and that the cooked should have put a cow on her plate or I don't know if that's how they joke between themselves. Came for Mother's Day with 2 kids and my husband. The servers were super welcoming and warm. It wasn't crowded at all. Everyone already there and walking in was Latino which was a good sign of good food to come! We were the exception being Asian-American. They have the BEST chips and salsa. Homemade chips and seriously the BEST HOMEMADE SALSA in San Francisco that I've had and I've been searching for such a long time. Although everything was a little worn out in terms of signage, furniture, and decoration, it had an authentic feel to it and beautiful hand-painted murals of rural landscapes that made the restaurant unique and entertaining. We ordered the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo and 3 pupusas- all we give 2 thumbs up. Overall, I would give it 4.5 stars but rounding up since my whole family including the kids left feeling positive. It was a very satisfactory Mother's Day meal (me being the celebrant). We'll definitely be coming back. The sign outside is almost invisible, the decor a bit humble...however, the staff is tops! We were made very welcome and I was able to see the nice chef. I am really surprised there aren't more reviews of this place. The food is really really good. And the atmosphere is like stepping into Central America. I can't imagine that the language barrier is as big a deal as people are saying. It's worth struggling through it if you have to to get to the food. But seriously, you are in California; you should learn a little Spanish. We went for take out. While they do have burritos on the menu, this is not a burrito place and I think our waitress was somewhat annoyed at our order because we have picky kids who want it their way. We also ordered the Salvadoran specialty plate. We waited 30 minutes for the burritos to arrive which was fine because I was warned so we were just soaking up the atmosphere. This is a family restaurant with kids running around and the jukebox playing a full range of Latino music, salsa, banda, norteno, you name it. When our food came, they had missed the Salvadoran plate even though I had ordered, as another review recommended, in Spanish. And it turns out there was a waitress who was fluent in English. I don't know how often she's there though. Anyway, that took another 15 minutes. As I'm writing this it sounds like a miserable experience. But it wasn't. It was great. Everyone was really nice and apologetic. The Salvadoran specialties are the way to go. The pupusas are excellent. The chicharrones are excellent. The tamales are excellent. The plantains are excellent. The horchata and tamarindo, well, I think I've made my point. Next time, I won't do take out. Next time, I'm gonna get a table and stay a while. They have other menu items as well, such as burritos, special dishes, and popular dishes (well, according to the menu on the signboard). I once had one of their chicken dishes and it was mighty hearty--good enough to share with one, maybe two other people. Anyway, the pupusa info: as their little business announcement says, non-greasy pupusas. Nice, right? The salad served with the pupusas is very fresh and flavorful, and the pupusas have just the right amount of filling. They have specials for each day of the week they're open, e.g., pupusas for $1 (minimum order 2?) on Tuesdays. Correct me if I'm wrong with this bit of information.... I love the tamarind juice here, even if it is sugary/carbalicious. The service? Warm, friendly, like a family. The place is large, so there's plenty of space to sit and eat....I guess the times I've been here have been off-times for business since there weren't many other customers around. We came in for dinner, so FYI, flower vendors will come and go but they're not too pushy about it. Seating = plenty. Large 2-tops and 4 tops, which can be pushed together for larger groups. In comparison, a single order of pupusas is $2.50-2.75. I ordered the "queso y loroco" (cheese and edible flowers) and "queso y frijoles" (cheese and beans). I much preferred the former, probably because it was about to erupt with the amount of cheese put in there (couldn't taste the flowers all that much, but they were visible). I come here a couple of months ago and the breakfast was delicious, I knew I was going to be back. Today I was doing laundry next door and wanted pupusas a little bit to bad. I order two pupusas revueltas, and I ate one I felt like the cheese was sour and extra cheesy but I kept eating to fulfill my craving.I gave a piece to my bf because we always share food.
