Most servers have limited English so be patient when communicating with them. They are quick and efficient when it isn't too busy. The food is alright. The rice and beans are typical style of what you might get at the majority of Mexican establishments. We got two different fajitas (Shrimp and combo - steak, chorizo and chicken) both were decent. Both lack the seasoning you would except from the Hispanic culture. The Grande Margarita was "ok". Just your "run-of-the-mill" Margarita mixed that You buy at the store. Dare I say, this may be the best Mexican restaurant in Meridian? Having grown up here, there are quite a few Mexican restaurants that are surprisingly good for small town Mississippi. This one is the newest, and with the likes of La Piñata, El Norte, and San Marcos dominating the Mexican food scene, Maria's had to impress. And it did. Not only was the interior decoration the best in the city, but the service was excellent and the food was fantastic. I got the steak fajita, and, unlike the other fajitas in town, the portions weren't immense, and the flavor was close to perfect. I wish the salsa with the nachos was a bit heartier, for I thought it was fairly watered down, but the chips and main entree more than made up for it. Overall, Maria blew expectations away, and I definitely recommend for anyone looking for a good Mexican fix in the city. read more

Stopped in here for a late lunch. Food was delicious and brought out hot and quickly. Atmosphere is cute. Place is really clean, too.

All right... let's see. It was later. (1:30 ish) Certainly after the 'lunch rush ' but the place was nearly empty. The back half was unlit. We were seated immediately. I ordered a water and mom ordered a coffee. The waitress brought her a cola. A male server dismissed the female waitress and brought the coffee. Our meals came out in good time and the flavors were pretty tasty. My chicken was sooo dry it was unforgivable . And there was zero spice. (Heat) not to say it was bland. It just wasn't spicy. The garlic flavored white bread was odd. Like: who wants white bread with their Mexican dinner? That's just stupid. Overall the meal was tasty. Hey, I was unsure of what I was getting into with Maria's given that I live in San Antonio where there is an abundance of great Mexican food. But, I was pleasantly surprised. The rice and beans were top notch and beef fajitas were superb. The margarita was tart and not overly sweetened and you could taste the tequila. I was just passing through on my way to Dallas from Louisville and I stopped for dinner before passing out at a local hotel... I was born in California and I have lived in the Dallas area for 13 years. I'm 51 years old, so I have been around the block when it comes to Mexican food. I wouldn't be writing this if I wasn't impacted by this place. First, the people were friendly and sat me down right away. I enjoyed their very well balanced salsa (and chips) that they provide in a carafe along with a dipping bowl so you can add more salsa later, a touch that I liked a lot. I chose the "marias rellenos " a chile relleno dish that was topped with my choice of meat. I like a lot of cheese in my chili relleno's and these were "stuffed". The rancho suace was also delicious! And they were surrounded by shredded beef that was very tender and delicious. Their beans and rice are also to be noted as very well prepared. Take it from a guy who has had California and Texas Mexican food all of their life, I was very impressed with this Mississippi restaurant! I hope they stick around! read more

We decided it would be fun to write this review in a play-by-play format. We are from Dallas, Texas and really think twice about getting Mexican food out of state. A couple Yelp reviewers who claimed they had knowledge of what real Texas Mexican food was like said they liked this place a lot and that is what brought us here. We were greeted in a very friendly manner and promptly seated. When our hostess approached the first table she noticed it was dirty and moved us to a clean booth. She started us out with chips and salsa and we are already impressed! The salsa comes in a small carafe with bowls on top so you can refill your own bowl of salsa. The salsa itself is AMAZING! Tasted so fresh like they have a garden out back and just hand picked the tomatoes. A table next to us was celebrating a birthday. The staff sang Happy Birthday and we sang along. After the song the staff used a noise maker that scared us half to death, but we instantly burst into laughter! Haha so this would be a fun place to celebrate with family and friends. I ordered chicken fajitas for dinner and I was very pleased for the most part. I wish you were given three small "taco" sized tortillas instead of two large "burrito" sized tortillas if I'm being critical. My mama order the pick 2 combo platter and got a cheese enchilada and a beef taco. The enchiladas come in white corn tortillas which my mama doesn't personally like so she was not as impressed with her meal, but there was nothing wrong with it. It just wasn't to her usual Texas standards. I also ordered a medium margarita on-the-rocks with salt due to another review saying it was the perfect tangy-sour-salty-tequila ratio and MAN were they RIGHT! If I wasn't driving far I would've definitely had a second (and maybe even a third ). Overall, these Texas gals were pleased and impressed that salsa like that could be located outside the great state. Also, I loved that each table had a napkin dispenser because Mexican food always gets very messy for me and I hate asking over and over for more napkins and I didn't have to do that. read more

First of all, I just want to say the service was great. Second, I'm from Houston and I've live in San Antonio so I tried not to have too high of expectations. The food server talked about how good the queso was so we ordered the large ($12.99). It was thin and watery and not very good. We ordered tacos, enchiladas, tostadas and guacamole. Everything was so bland; even the chips and salsa needed salt. My son ordered churros for dessert and they seemed overly greasy like the grease wasn't hot enough :( read more

Great food! Great service! We've been to Maria's a few times now; everything I've had has been fabulous! We went tonight (Tuesday); we were greeted with a free margarita and they had a musician there. The musician was great and entertaining and engaging without interfering with us being able to enjoy each other's company either. This is now the only Mexican restaurant we eat at in meridian. You can get a typical combination if you want one, but they also have some great, more authentic Mexican dishes. We love Maria's!! read more

Food was awesome. I found that they offered unique and different items than what you see in other area Mexican restaurants. I had the chimichangas (1 beef 1 chicken) and it was seriously delicious. My daughter had the kid's beef burrito and she loved it. My husband gad the steak tacos and was very satisfied. We also thoroughly enjoyed a side of Mexican street corn. Our server wasn't the best, but she was young and the restaurant hasn't been open that long. We will definitely back though. The service was absolutely amazing, and the servers were extremely friendly and personable. But as great as the service was, the food was even better. Take your time to look at the menu, because there is a huge amount of choice here! My nephew had the shrimp chimichangas, and they were massive--and delicious. I had the seafood molcajete, which, at $20, is admittedly expensive. For the money, however, you get an ENORMOUS amount of food, and I have plenty of leftovers for tomorrow! A tostada and enchilada plate was ordered. When the plate arrived, the tostada was limp (Could not pick it up.). The chicken on the tostada had to much onion. The enchilada was fair in taste. A pork plate was also ordered. The pork was a little chewy. The salsa was fair. No description was given on what was on the tostada or if any of the chicken dishes had a sauce. The only bean options were refried or black - charro option would be nice. The server spoke little English, so we could not ask many questions. read more

We will not be back to eat except for dessert, but probably not. The flan and sopapilla was the best part of this meal. The salsa was very bland. We got the steak and peppers with rice and beans, steak tacos with black beans and a big burrito. We all got margaritas and oh my goodness, not good flavor and so weak in alcohol. Best customer service in the area. The food was amazing and the drinks were strong and cheap. These guys know what they are doing and do it well. The dinning area and loby give tell you right away your in for something great and its right! The Chimichangas where as good as they are fun to say.
